  Faye laughed. “You’re a bastard.”

He grinned and caressed her cheek. “I know, but that’s why you love me.”

  EPILOGUE

  Beep…

The machine that Nightmare was attached to let out a low sound. Celise raised her eyes, read the numbers on the display, and wrote them down in her notebook.

  Nothing had changed.

Everything was still the same, but at the same time, everything was different. It’d been several days since they’d returned with all the equipment.

They had everything they needed to create the first female cyborg, but the rogue leader was still not waking up.

  Something was wrong.

It was unusual, seeing this big dark cyborg being so immobile. His usually aggressive and defensive expression wasn’t there anymore. Instead, his face was calm, revealing his beauty in a way she hadn’t seen before.

She couldn’t help but feel sorry for him. He’d been through so much. No wonder he’d developed thick skin. There weren’t many people he trusted, but she’d managed to become one of the few.

Celise shook her head and snorted. The last thing she’d ever imagined was finding herself there, in the Fighters’ headquarters, taking care of their leader.

Everything told her he was dangerous, deadly, and unpredictable.

The media did a good job depicting him as a monster, but in a way, he was one.

He’d been forced into a role he didn’t want. Celise didn’t doubt that.

There was no love in Nightmare’s heart. No emotions, just determination, and pure stubbornness. That was what had kept him alive … until now.

Blaze entered the infirmary. His red hair was in a ponytail and his shining eyes had a serious glint as he approached the bed. “Any change?”

She shook her head. “No. He’s stable, but I can’t figure out what’s wrong with him. The medicine we brought back has healed him, just as it healed Silver, but why isn’t he waking up?”

The medic cyborg studied his leader. “All the scans show his body is fine. He should be awake by now. We’ve taken him out of the coma.” He went silent for a while. “What if the damage isn’t physical?”

Celise tensed. “Do you think it’s in his programming?”

“It might be. We should take a look.”

She grabbed the machine that stood in the corner of the room and placed it on the small table next to the bed. It was about the size of a laptop, but as thick as three books. Frustration filled her. “Why didn’t we think of this sooner?”

“Don’t blame yourself. We’re all tired.”

She sighed. “True.” Celise unbuttoned Nightmare’s shirt, revealing his fit chest, but only paid attention to what she was doing. She reached for the cords to the machine and attached them to the leader’s chest and forehead.

The machine beeped, and the digital screen came on.

Celise pushed a long sequence of numbers.

The machine got to work, looking deep into Nightmare’s program, scanning every little part of it.

Minutes passed in silence, then, finally, the device let out a loud sound before going silent.

She looked at the screen with a thundering heart. She gasped.

Blaze came around the bed with worry in his expression, and scanned the screen. “Oh, my God. It’s worse than I thought. His basic program has been damaged. Healing him won’t fix this, and as it is right now, he’ll never wake up.” He looked at Celise. “Can you fix him?”

She dried away the stubborn tear that ran down her cheek. “This is beyond my level of expertise. I’m years away from learning how to create cyborgs. The female cyborg program is complete, but how to write or repair a program … I’ve no idea how to do that.”

  Silence filled the large room.

The machine attached to Nightmare beeped.

“So, what do we do?” the medic asked with a shaky voice.

  The machine beeped again …

  … and again.

  Celise stared at Nightmare.

  Beep …

  Beep …

She pinned Blaze with a look, determination filling her. “We need Jade.”
