The Humiliation of Hannah

“Stick it out and take your beating!” Even Travis shouted that, sounding cold and belittling.

He moved in close and fondled the bud between her legs. He pinched it hard, until she shrieked, then dipped his fingers into both portals and made her writhe on them.

“Look at me, Hannah,” he ordered. Even in the presence of her husband, there was a look of desperate yearning in her molten eyes.

“You’re quite the slut, aren’t you?” Travis asked her.

  “Yes, sir.”

“What do you feel right now, right now?” He demanded, his face was just inches from hers, and though she knew that her husband was watching everything, she couldn’t take her mind or her eyes from Travis’s wicked gaze—he looked no different than Jarrett Cain to her. “And don’t you dare lie to me. What is it you feel?” He jabbed his fingers deeper, knowing what effect it had on her.

“Desirous, sir. Hunger,” she spoke in a breathless whisper, “Desperately and totally filled with lust. I’d take your cock now anywhere, sir.” Oh, how terribly this indicted her!

“And you know you’re wrong to want me.”

“Yes, it’s true, and I’m ashamed that I do want you.”

“Well, you come for me, girl, right on my hand. Show your husband what a whore you are. Maybe then he’ll let you go back to the whorehouse where you belong.” He spat this out so spitefully she believed he told the truth.

Like the many men before him, his fingers were soothing, so perfectly tuned to her body’s lust. She never would have guessed what things Travis could do to her with so little effort.

“Don’t hold back, Hannah. If I think you are, I’ll make you do it again.”

Suddenly, her rising storm of passion burst everywhere. She clenched up tightly and cried aloud as the feelings swept her body. She knew her thoughts. She knew the shame of her adulterous heart one more terrible time and now Daniel had seen it too. Now he knew. Now he understood.

The two men splashed vinegar over the raw welts on her ass and breasts when they were done, so that her flesh burned deeper than the surface skin. Until the sting quieted she would be reminded how far she had fallen.

  ***

“Won’t you let me go now?” Hannah implored her husband when on the following day, after Travis led her from the barn to the house. She looked into his impassive face; her soft eyes were filled with tears of sorrow. She was dressed like a lady, like the old Hannah, not the whore, wearing a modest dress in a pretty copper color. She was the picture of virtue in such fine and proper attire. But she hated how it felt, the way it seemed to burn her flesh. She wanted to tear it off it felt so wrong.

When Daniel answered her question, saying she looked lovely in the new dress, she replied, tiredly, “Oh, please, Daniel, won’t you let me go now? Haven’t you seen how horrible and depraved I am?”

“I brought it back from Springfield,” he returned, ignoring her plea. “They have a whole store of women’s dresses, nothing else. Can you imagine that?”

  “Daniel, please!” she wailed.

He took her hand and led her into the parlor, where the shadows of the early evening and a single lit lamp gave the room a beautifully sumptuous glow.

Daniel took one chair, she was motioned to the other. A table sat between them with a bottle of wine and two glasses. The bottle was open and Daniel filled both glasses.

  “Daniel, I don’t drink.”

“But today you will.” As Daniel pushed the glass in her hand and forced it to her lips, she recalled the night with Jarrett.

She gulped it down, her mind spinning. Had she told him this? About the wine? The drunken stupor, the wild woman who turned into a hellion with no inhibitions, her reservations gone? The lush feeling of the liquor invaded her body rapidly, and was moving through her veins, setting her mind reeling faster and faster. Daniel poured her another drink and she gulped this one down with no hesitation.

“You did terrible things that night, didn’t you?” he asked.

She flashed back, remembering the wild orgy with a reflex smile. “Oh, yes, I did,” she said, feeling a bit like the wanton woman she was that night.

“And you liked every one of those terrible things?” he pressed.

Her head was spinning faster still and she giggled uncontrollably—had that been two glasses or three? She’d lost count.

  “Ummm.” She giggled more.

“You shameful slut,” her husband said. He wasn’t angry, but smiling, looking like a devilish rogue.

“They made you stick things into your body, didn’t they?”

“Oh, you’re sooooooo nasty, Daniel,” she chortled.

“Show me; I want to see.” Still smiling, lewdly, like the men that took her. Funny, all the hard edges seemed so blurry now.

“You want to see…” her mind was a delirious, pleasant jumble, tumbling all around her memories. “Ooo, yes, let me show you.” She sunk to the floor and began to remove her dress, staring at him drunkenly, like a little tart on the burlesque stage. She opened the top of her dress, showing off her breasts, and raising them to her face, sloppily kissing the flushed skin, while staring luridly into her husband’s face. She hadn’t done this for Jarrett Cain!

“You like my titties?” she purred coyly.

“Oh, I like them, you little whore. Show me more.”

She pushed the bodice of her dress down and unhooked her skirt, shimmying out of the everything she wore. Naked, lustfully happy, brash and bold, her smoldering eyes fixed on his.

“Jeeeeeu see, Daniel, I wusa real nasty whore.” She swiped the empty bottle of wine from the table and moved to her hands and knees. Grinning sweetly, then licking her lips, then batting her lashes coquettishly, she finally sucked the neck of the bottle until it was wet, really wet, and then reached around to her bottom and stuck its neck into her ass and shoved. “Ooo, dear, thaz …so… ooooooo…”

She closed her eyes feeling the strange cool hardness inside her back passage, and the rising fire in her belly. She jabbed her entrails over and over again, while occasionally opening her eyes on Daniel’s surly, lecherous face.

  “You liking this, surrrrrrrrrr, hmmm?”

“You know that I like it. What man wouldn’t?” She looked up then, and crawled forward, the forgotten bottle slipping from her ass. She took her husband’s hand. “Lemme have your fisht.”

He made it big, and she pulled it down between her legs so she could mount it. She stuck it up inside her nest of sweaty hair and wet flesh, and rode it, leaning back against her arm for support. Soon Daniel moved to the floor with her and slid his fingers into her cunt deeper and deeper. Never had he seen her flow so profusely with arousal.

“Oh, yesssssssh, ram me, darlin’, pleassh,” she practically screamed.

Daniel wasn’t about to deny her.

His whole fist slipped inside her quite remarkably, and Daniel leaned in to watch longingly the vivid expression of bliss play out across her lips and eyes. Her coming did not end there. Once she crested on the thrusting movements of his hand, he pulled out and pushed her onto her back. He stripped away his clothes as he looked down on her dreamy sexy face. Now naked, he climbed atop her writhing body and rammed his member into the spasming hole, using her forcefully while she bent to every position and adjusted to every tempo, never missing the glorious amazement of another stabbing, almost painful, always beautiful spasm of physical joy.

They were still naked on the parlor floor hours later, where they fainted with exhaustion. In the dead of night, the cold air crept in around them, and they mutually rose from the mess they’d made and stumbled to bed. She was still quite drunk and needed his arms for support.

The sheets were cool at first, but warmed quickly from their body heat. They fell deeper asleep for the remainder of the night clinging to each other with their legs intertwined in a puzzle.

  CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Hannah awakened alone in bed. For a moment it seemed perfectly natural, then she panicked. S
he was about to rise, when Daniel entered the room with two mugs of steaming coffee.

“It’s all right to be here?” she said, a little fearful.

“It’s where you’ve belonged all along, wife.” He was much more the husband she knew than he’d been in the last few days.

She wasn’t sure. “I have a headache, Daniel.”

“I’m sure you do. Wine does that.”

  “Then I shouldn’t drink again.”

“I suppose it’s made you forget, too.”

She thought again and smiled bashfully. “No, not at all… I remember what we did. And Daniel… I never mentioned to you anything about drinking with Jarrett Cain, did I?”

“No.” He smiled. “I’d say most of what happened at Cain’s ranch I already knew about, including that drunken night.”

“What?” She exclaimed, completely shocked at his words.

“Beau got drunk when he returned to town from Miss Mamie’s. Eldon Tremaine was drunk too and spilled out one hell of a story.”

  “But Eldon wasn’t…”

“Hush! What Eldon might not have seen, he sure heard about.”

“Oh, my word, then everyone must know!”

“No, not everyone. And it doesn’t matter anyway. Beau learned the truth and had the wisdom even while he was lying drunk in the jail to be sure I found you.”

“You knew all this and yet you didn’t care?”

“That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you. Now you tell me, was it the same way with Jarrett Cain? Were you the same woman you were last night when you were drunk with him.”

She blushed. “Well, in a way, but then not.”

  He looked confused.

“My body wanted those unseemly things when I was with him, Daniel, I can’t deny that. But my heart ached the whole time for the wrongness of it; that it wasn’t you. I ached for you. I did such shameful things with those men, and last night again with you.”

“Not shameful to me.” He shook his head.

“You saw it all, and you can still say that?”

  “I can.”

  “But you were drunk.”

“No, I’d had one glass of wine. You had all the rest.”

  Her blush deepened.

“I expect no less from you, Hannah, than seeing your passions pour like a raging storm. At heart you are a lusty savage. It’s a beautiful thing to see. You cannot fool me when it comes to that tawdry side of you. When I look at the last few weeks, I realize that this was just as much my mistake as yours. It was for me to protect you from those who would abuse your innocence and the fire that breeds your lust. It was for us to enjoy that fire together, but keep it otherwise under control. I failed you, Hannah. And I am sorry for that.”

She looked at him amazed. “Oh, you are a good man, Daniel. But twisting the truth of this matter by accusing yourself does not assuage my guilt.”

“If you need my forgiveness, you have it, Hannah. But in my eyes you’re guilty of nothing but doing what you had to do.”

“You do believe that?” she was amazed.

  “I do.”

She could feel that in her bones. “You know, I think in time I might actually believe that,” she smiled. “I mean if you could call last night beautiful…” she blushed, “it was, well…”

  “It was what?”

“The most amazing sex I’ve ever had. And if that’s so…perhaps, there’s no room for guilt.”

He took her hand in his. “Maybe not. I mean if you insist on feeling ashamed, I can whip you daily to assuage your guilt. If you need to pay your penance hanging naked in the yard, so be it,” his eyes twinkled darkly. “But hear this, wife, I will never again allow you to take yourself from me for any reason. You are my wife and you will not deny me the love you owe me. I love you still.” His eyes narrowed and his voice thundered quietly. “No circumstance, no evil man can change that. I would not be much of a man if it did. We’re going to sleep in this bed, we’re going to have sex here and anywhere else we so desire because we’re both lusty, wicked people, who like to do those terrible things.” He laughed. “We’ll make love enough in our own bawdy way so that in time, that nightmare will disappear.” He looked at her lovingly. “It’ll look like one of those picture postcards from the fair, something that fades to dust and blows away. That’s all it is, Hannah, that nightmare. This, here, this marriage can’t be destroyed as long as we love each other.”

The last of those invisible knots that bound her heart loosened, tears streamed from her eyes and she moved to his lap where he held her for a long time.

  EPILOGUE

A few days following the reunion between Hannah and Daniel, three men from town rode into the yard, and brusquely cornered Daniel on the porch. Hannah watched from the barn where she’d been milking the cows, while Travis stepped out from around her and quickly moved to the porch and joined the conversation. The discussion was carried on at a distance too far away for her to hear, but given the gravity of the mood, she sensed she should stay where she was. When the group broke apart, the three men mounted up again and waited for Daniel to saddle Buck.

“Where are you going?” she called to him, as he led his horse from the barn to the waiting party.

“Travis, tell her when I’m gone,” he said to his friend, then he turned to her, “And you, Hannah, go nowhere. NO WHERE.”

“Yes, sir,” she looked up at him dazed.

Daniel was gone for the rest of the day and most of the next, arriving home so exhausted that he wouldn’t say a word about his mission.

The following morning after Daniel had eaten breakfast and gone outside to begin the day’s work, Travis explained for him.

“Those men and Daniel…they took care of Jarrett Cain. I guess his boys scattered into the fields when Jarrett starting firing his rifle. Rory took him down with a single shot to his leg. He’s in jail now and will be for a long time. Three others are there with him and will be put on trial. They figure it will have to take place in Springfield. We’re too small here for that sort of thing.”

Hannah stared blankly at the drying egg yolk and cold biscuit crumbs on her breakfast plate.

“You don’t have to worry about them, Hannah. The threat is gone. Although if I know Daniel Crowe, he’s not going to let you out of his sight for a long long time.”

She looked up with soulful eyes. “You know, I need to thank you. You’ve helped us both so much.”

“Oh, don’t think I don’t carry in my own heart the fact that I could have prevented this if I hadn’t left.”

“No, Travis,” she shook her head. “This started before you first returned.” She sighed. “The way I figure it, some things have to happen. I have to believe that. Awful as it was, I think this was one of them. Don’t ask me why, I don’t want to worry over it anymore. I just sense what’s true.”

He nodded, not knowing what to say. “All right, then.”

She could feel the awkwardness between them, and pushed away from the table saying, “You know I have a lot of work to do.

Some weeks later, after life had pretty much returned to normal, a familiar figure entered the yard on foot. He walked a bit awkwardly, but when Hannah saw him from the kitchen window she smiled. She’d been expecting him.

Once inside the house, Beau Noble gathered his sister into his arms and they hugged for a long time.

“You have no idea how sorry I am,” were his first words.

“Shush! It’s over for us both.”

“But I have many things to tell you.”

“Say nothing Beau. I’m done with it.”

They broke apart and Hannah looked at him curiously. Daniel had just entered the kitchen and for the first time in some while, there was no grim expression on his face seeing his brother-in-law.

“Did you hurt yourself or something?” Hannah asked her brother. “You’re moving oddly.”

The handsome kid smiled, then he blushed, then finally admitted, “Sorta, I guess.”

  “What do you mean?”

He shook his head sheepishly, turned to Daniel who only snickered with amusement, then looked back at his sister. “Darn it, Hannah I couldn’t get out of jail with out paying a few prices to, um, Judge Boone.”

“Oh, my. I see,” she giggled quietly. “Well then, why don’t you sit that sore butt of yours down in the chair and I’ll give you some food. You staying long?” She moved to the stove.

“No, sis, Daniel’s taking me to Springfield. I’m joining Jolie at Aunt Grace’s.”

  Hannah whipped around. “You’re what?”

“Yes, ma’am.” He smiled. “You two need some time alone. Some peaceful time alone”

Hannah looked at her husband in amazement, then at her very serious-looking brother. She was taken aback by the sudden turn, but then without much further consideration, she knew how necessary this was.

“Yes, Beau, we surely do need some time alone.”

She looked at Daniel standing next to her. Her eyes glazed over a bit with tears, but there was nothing but a feeling of contentment in her heart. She was so glad to be back home with her husband at her side.
