by Remi Black

The exiled wizard Alstera, whose power was restrained for crimes against wizardry, finds herself in a snow-smothered village being attacked by Death Walking, a re-animated corpse that drinks blood to retain a semblance of life. To fight the death-walker, she must rely on primitive and forbidden blood-magic.

Accused of being a shadow-spell wizard, Alstera rushes to kill the monster. To slip the shackles on her bindings, she must use blood-magic. Yet Death Walking, awakened by a blood spell, cannot be harmed by any magic called through blood. The monster takes another life. Instead of defeating the creature and freeing herself of another magical shackle, she has caused more death and the creature is now strengthened by magic.

And an Enclave wizard is tracking her to judge if she is keeping the Wizard Tenets. She knows he will judge against her, for Alstera has not only broken the blood-magic taboo but also allowed the monster to kill more people.

Can she defeat Death Walking before it takes yet another life? Will the Enclave tracker decide that Alstera must have her powers stripped completely away? Will wielding blood-magic against a blood-spelled creature force Alstera across the tenuous barrier that separates wizardry from foul sorcery?

Or will she herself be killed in battle against Death Walking?
