Battlefield Love

No. I couldn’t. After yesterday, I was well and truly done with gods, avatars, and dangerous and secret organizations torturing people.
Heart heavy with sorrow and regret, I made my way back to the lot where the big rigs pulled up. Cords wove through the air, connecting the truckers with the objects of their desire: beer, junk food, coke, women, and even drugs for some to keep them awake. The cupid powers stirred nausea in me when I remembered what I had done. No wonder the gods feared the powers of Eros if he was capable of all that.
I didn’t mess with anyone’s cords this time. Instead, I followed a particularly healthy one that led to a sweet girl in California, and I approached the trucker who was just about to climb into his ride again.
“I ain’t looking for a good time,” he said warily, adjusting his baseball cap.
That made me smile a little. I had a feeling that no matter how strong some of those cords were, and the attachments to the woman it belonged to, it wouldn’t necessarily stop a guy on the road from fooling around.
“That’s fine,” I said with an easy smile. “I’m just looking for a lift.”
The trucker glanced around. “I don’t know...”
“You should let me in,” I said, an idea coming to me as easily as breathing. Phone sex wasn’t going to work, but I suddenly thought of a new gig that might carry me for a little while. “I tell fortunes.”
The trucker snorted. “Sure, you’re going to give me my lotto numbers or something? Hit the road.”
“No.” I put my hands on my hips. “But I’ll tell you how you’re going to do with that sweet girl in Pasadena.”
He stared at me for a moment and then gave a curt nod. “All right. Get in, and let’s hear all about it.”
Awesome. My ticket out of here. A chance for a fresh start. Time to forget all about everything that had happened and to hide from Dartmoor and his bosses.
Once we got on the road, it started to rain, and I imagined the water sweeping across the path I had taken in the last few days, washing it away entirely until not a trace was left.
“You gonna tell me about the girl in Pasadena or what?” the driver asked.
