Onyx
HAVE YOU EVER hidden from everyone around you? Or wanted to make yourself as small as possible so that you could get away from the life you’re supposed to be living? I do on a daily basis. I’ve found so many ways to hide and become small. I’m surprised anyone knows I’m around anymore.
My name is Onyx Carrington, and I’ll be nineteen years old in a few days. I keep my jet-black hair straight and hanging down to just above my butt. It comes in handy when I want to hide my face from the world around me. I’ve got eyes so dark they almost look black depending on the mood I’m in. Because of my dad needing perfect appearances, I have a toned body due to different classes I take at the gym. One of which happens to be pole dancing.
I’m the daughter of Stanley Carrington, Senator. He’s got me groomed always to look perfect and not have a wrinkle in my clothes or a hair out of place. My mother, Amelia, left almost ten years ago. She walked away from the oppressive life we lead but left me behind. I haven’t heard a word from her since.
My dad doesn’t beat me, but abuse is abuse no matter what form it happens in. I’m kept a prisoner in the house on most days, and I don’t have any friends to speak of. One wrong move and I’m screamed at and called names until he’s decided he’s had enough. The only people my age I talk to are at parties my dad throws. He can control who I associate with that way.
I can be in a room full of people and still be the loneliest person there. So, I make myself small and blend in with the scenery surrounding me. No one notices the pain I hide or the misery I’m in on a daily basis. It’s a wonder I haven’t taken off on my own yet, like my mother, but I know he’d drag me back kicking and screaming without a care in the world. Hell, no one would blink an eye because my dad has plenty of people on his payroll. He doesn’t want to get his own hands dirty, so he hires men for that.
Music is my only vice. I listen to all different kinds of music because it’s the only escape I’ve found so far in life. There’s one band, in particular, I listen to religiously, Wicked Angels. They’re local, and I may have a crush on the singer, Knight Wheeler. I know there’s no way I’d ever be even a blip on his radar, though.
Anyone with eyes sees the tabloids with pictures of him and all the different girls. I’m nothing compared to the model-like women he takes to his bed and parties with. It’s not that I have low self-esteem, but I know I don’t compare to those types of women in other ways.
Knight is one of the sexiest men I’ve ever seen. He’s got dirty blond hair and a beard. I’ve seen his eyes the lightest shade of blue and the darkest. When his eyes are really dark, I swear he’s wearing colored lenses because I’ve never seen blue eyes that dark before. On his right arm, there are tattoos that I can never quite make out, but I want to see them up close and personal. The persona he puts off on stage is one of utter defiance. He doesn’t care what anyone thinks of him and the way he lives his life. It’s something I dream of experiencing one day.
Every member of Wicked Angels has had experiences and lived life outside the walls of a house. Or what feels like a prison. I have no experience with anything, and I don’t see that changing any time soon. If my dad has his way, I’ll be stuck in this house for the rest of my life. Or until he dies. Whichever comes first.
So, I spend my days listening to music and singing when my dad isn’t in hearing range. He can’t stand it when I sing. It’s a waste of time and energy as far as he’s concerned. No, I’m being groomed to be nothing more than the wife of someone he approves of. And I’ve hear
d him talking about marrying me off to someone soon. I’ll be moving from one prison to another.
The only thing I’m supposed to worry about is cooking and making sure the house is clean. If a party needs to be thrown, I’m the one that has to plan it and make sure it’s perfect in every aspect. I’ll be on committees with other housewives who do nothing but drink, do drugs, cheat, and talk shit about their husbands behind their backs. That’s not a life I want to live for myself.
I want the freedom to make my own decisions and mistakes. Most nineteen-year-olds get to go out with friends, spend their off-days lounging around and make their own choices. I’ve never gotten to experience any of that, and I want to more than I want my next breath of air. But, until I’m out from under my dad’s roof, nothing will ever change. It’s up to me to take control of my life and make sure I finally get to do everything I want to do.
Hell, I want to rebel against everything my dad expects of me. I’ve never dared to do it, but it would be nice to do something I want for once. I just don’t know if it’s worth the punishment I’m sure will be dealt to me if I actually went through with any form of rebellion.
“Onyx!” I hear bellowed from downstairs.
Turning off my music, I practically run downstairs to find my dad standing outside of his office. The one room in the house I’m not allowed to go in. Ever. The look on his face is thunderous as he waits for me to get to him.
“Yes, father?” I ask, stopping a foot in front of him.
“I just got off the phone with Mr. Jackson. He let me know that on your birthday you’ll be getting a sum of money from your grandmother. Did you know about this?” he asks.
“No. I don’t know what you’re talking about. What money?” I ask bewildered.
Mr. Jackson is our family lawyer. He handles everything for my father, and this is the first time I’m hearing about anything being left to me. I’ve only ever seen this man when he’s come to the house because my dad didn’t want to go to his office for one reason or another.
“Apparently quite a sum from what he said. It’s in an account in your name and your name only. I can’t touch a dime of it. What the hell was she thinking? You don’t need that fucking money, and I want you to make sure it gets transferred to a bank account in my name. You won’t be touching that money you spoiled little bitch. Do you understand what I’m saying, or are you too stupid to comprehend?” he yells, getting closer and closer to me.
This is the first time I’ve been terrified of my dad. He’s never looked this close to hitting me before. But, it’s over money and the chance to have my independence, so I’m not surprised in the least. I bet he’s losing his money left and right again. Mom had to bail him out once before, and it’s the straw that broke the camel’s back as they say for her.
“I understand. I’ll take care of it on my birthday. Do I have to sign anything or go see him?” I ask nervously, letting my hair drop down to cover my face.
“I’ll take you to his office on my way to my appointment. From there you can go to the bank and then straight back here. I want the paperwork for the account left in the drawer of the table in the living room. If it’s not there when I get back, you’ll be sorry, you stupid little bitch. I don’t know why your cunt of a mother didn’t make my life easier and take you with her when she left. But, now I get this money, so I guess she won’t have access to it,” he yells before turning and stomping into his office, slamming the door in my face.
I walk back up to my room and wonder how much money is in the account being held for me. A plan begins to formulate in my head, and I wonder if I’ll be able to pull it off. I’ve never attempted anything like this, so we’ll have to see. Hopefully, I can do what I need to do and make sure I get away from the man I share DNA with.
Chapter Two
Knight
IT FEELS LIKE we’ve been on this fucking tour forever. Thankfully we have one more stop, and then it’s time to go home. Up until we get to go home, it’s the show, interviews, photoshoots, and anything else our manager Isabella can jam into our schedule.
My name is Knight Wheeler, and I’m the singer for Savage Heart. Diesel, Damon, Memphis, Byron, and Tyson are the other members of the band. We’ve known one another all our lives, it seems. We’re more like brothers than we are friends.
I just turned twenty-two. I’ve got dirty blond hair with a beard I keep short. My eyes are blue, and they get lighter or darker depending on the mood I’m in. I keep myself fit so I can perform shows multiple times a week without worrying about losing my breath.
I spend my days writing songs with the guys and doing what Isabella wants. At night, I live my life to the fullest once our show is done. If that means picking a different woman in each city than that’s what I do. I like a variety in my women and if I see one I want, I go after her. Not a single one has ever turned me down and I don’t see that happening anytime soon.
“Guys, I know you’ve all been beat on this tour, but when we get back, I think it’s time to hit the studio. Fans want a new album,” Isabella says, walking up from the back of the bus.
“Isabella, we need a break,” I say, looking at the rest of the guys.
“We need an album. I’ve already booked time for you and it’s imperative you’re there. Maybe after the record releases you can have a short break. Then it’s back on tour,” she says, sitting down in the seat next to me.
“No. We need a break. I need a break from everything band related. Make it happen,” I tell her.
“I’ll see what I can do, but this is coming down from the label. I’d gladly give you guys a break,” she says, a small smile on her face.
Standing up, I make my way to the back of the bus and lock the door behind me. Stripping, I get in the bed before me and try to get a few hours of sleep before it’s time to go over the set list and prepare for tonight’s show. It’s not long before the moving bus and voices of my friends lull me to sleep.
Waking up, I see we’re at the venue for tonight’s show. The guys are all ready to head inside to get changed and go over last minute details before we take the stage. A new band is performing before us and I haven’t had time to even learn their name. This is the only show they’re doing on this tour.
The last band dropped out unexpectedly and this group is their replacement. I don’t know a damn thing about them. Hopefully, they get the crowd amped up for us. Our last tour partners had an issue doing that the last few shows. I’m not sure what happened to them, but it seems like they imploded and couldn’t stop it from happening. Guess that’s what happens when your wives or girlfriends find out your tapping every piece of strange available to you.
I grab my bag and make my way inside to get ready and go over the set list. Because if I slept through doing that, I know I was tired and needed the sleep. Unfortunately, I’ll be up the rest of the night while the rest of the band sleeps. Or, I’ll go back to sleep once I settle down after getting done with the show. Who knows?
“Morning sleeping beauty,” Diesel says as I make my way to the front of the bus.
“Fuck off,” I murmur good naturedly.
“Did you get enough beauty rest?” his brother Damon asks.
“I got what I need and obviously what you need too, fucker,” I answer him.
Making my way off the bus, our one security guard is already having a hard time holding back the small crowd wanting a chance to get to us. We all smile and keep moving to the back door where a security guard from the venue is waiting on us. Screams follow us as we move. The braver girls find ways to get to us and hand us everything from their numbers to the panties they just took off.
“Knight!” I hear screamed from one of the girls.
I don’t even bother turning in her direction. It’s time for me to get in the zone to go out on stage. I block everyone around me out as we walk down the small back hallway. The band playing doesn’t even register as we’re led to the small dressing room we’ll be in until it’s time for us to take
the stage.
Stripping out of my tee-shirt and jeans, I get dressed in the jeans and tank top I’ll be wearing for the show. Isabella isn’t in here right now, so I don’t care if I’m naked in front of the guys. It’s not like we haven’t all done the same damn thing. I’ve seen their junk more than I care to admit over the years. Either from us changing or one of them getting a piece of strange somewhere.
“Knight, you okay man?” Diesel asks, walking up to me with the set list in his hand.
“Yeah. Just tired as fuck. I’m ready for tonight to be over with so we can go home. I want to sleep for a fucking week man,” I answer, sitting down to look the list over.
“I hear that,” grumbles Memphis from the couch.
“Let’s close the show with Take Me Away,” I tell them, adding the song to the end of the list before handing it back to Diesel.
“Alright. Any other changes to anything?” Damon asks.
“Nope. Let’s just get the show over with and get back on the bus. We’ll stop when we’re a little bit from here for food. I don’t want anyone other than Isabella getting off the bus. She can grab our food and we’ll eat on the road. No fucking around tonight,” I tell them, letting everyone know I’m ready to go home.
It’s not long before Isabella pokes her head in the door and lets us know we’re on in five. The opening act is finishing up and then it’s us. I’m more than ready to get on stage. My tiredness and need to get home evaporates when I’m on stage, performing for the crowd. I empty my mind of everything except for putting my all into the performance.
The guys and I walk out and wait in the wings for the band to finish up. Their singer, Gabby, introduces us right before they all run off the stage. We exchange a quick hello before the guys make their way to the stage. I’m always the last one on.
I watch as Diesel gets in front of his amp. We don’t have to wait because Damon lets the opening act use his drums. The rest of the guys make sure their guitars are plugged in and ready to go before Damon starts banging away for our opening song, Took My Heart and Broke It.
