Dani laughed, “I’m trying my best to be nice. The lack of paparazzi at my door really helped my mood. Did I say thank you for that, by the way?”
“Only about a thousand times, darlin’.” He said gently. Tim had made a call just when Dani and Duke had returned from their impromptu vacation. First to one reporter, then to a second. By Tuesday morning, Tim was on record saying that he supported the pair for doing the right thing and for being as responsible as they could with the situation. He commended them for being adults about it, and not using the media to harm one another. In the end, with Tim’s kind words, she and Duke and become a bit of a celebrity couple. They could go out in the open without Dani having to risk losing her job. It was nice being able to go out and not have the gaggle of pushy paparazzi accosting them.
“Games goin’ pretty damn good.” Tim said, looking at the scoreboard with a look of obvious glee. “Not counting any chicken, but I’m gonna head down soon. You two want to come with?
“I want to!” Shana peeped, a little too excited. She slid close to Tim, slyly putting a hand on his shoulder. “Yvie and Shari are down there already.”
“Well, come on,” Tim offered an arm to the elder Bilson, flashing her a charming smile. “You too, you can’t waddle down that hall on your own. Tell me, who are you going to be scouting this summer anyway.”
Dani took his arm, throwing a knowing look at her mother who had been trying to put the moves on Tim all day. “Well, no one really. I’ve got a list of some college guys going right now. I’m hoping to snag one up before I go on maternity leave. Think you know him: Charlie Wright?”
“Chuck’s got a mean arm. Might be a bit of a diva though. But I trust your judgment.”
Together they made their way down the short hallway to an elevator. Last time she’d looked at the score the Black Hawks had been up by thirteen. It was a comfortable lead, but she knew from experience that the other team could catch up at any moment.
Outside, the trio was ushered by guards to sit on the Black Hawks side of the field. The bright lights hurt her eyes, so Dani had to squint against them. They found Yvie and Shari right next to the players. Greg was staring intently at the field, a hot dog in one hand, and a beer in other.
“Hey guys, finally came down to sit with the regular people?” Yvie stood, squeezing her mother and sister in a tight hug before settling back into her seat. “Greg, did you say ‘hi’ yet?” Since they’d gotten to the game at different times, the families hadn’t said much to one another yet. Greg waved a halfhearted wave at them, not tearing his eyes away for any moment.
Dani turned toward the field, spotting Duke just as he tackled another player right to the ground. The hard thud as their bodies connected made Dani wince. She knew it was irrational, but Dani was suddenly worried about the safety gear football players used. Duke had been far from accident prone, compared to most football players. Dani didn’t want him to start that right now.
“Get em, Bulldozer!” A fan yelled from above her. “Ten minutes left. Put those boys on the ground!”
Dani didn’t have much time to watch games anymore, still, whenever her clients made it to the big league games, she took time out of her day to watch. It was exciting being so close to the field again, the rush of game energy and the cheers from the crowds, it reminded her just why she’d wanted to be a sports agent anyway. She’d gone to law school, and built herself up in the world to be right where she was on the field supporting players like Duke who gave as much as they got. He had, by far, been one of her easiest clients. And though they’d had some speed bumps, she couldn’t help but be happy where she landed.
Of course, she wasn’t his agent anymore. They’d discussed, at length about her representing him. It had been a mutual decision, one that was easier to make once they’d decided that their relationship was more important than work. Working together, raising a family together, it would be too much. And with all the notoriety and interviews he’d gotten over the past few months. She’d poured through a list of agents at the office, until the right agent popped up. Matt was a no-nonsense agent that kept his players on the straight and narrow. He’d be good for Duke, keep him on track with eyes on the prize.
It was a good fit.
“Go, go!” Dani jumped out of her thoughts to see the quarterback racing across the field, ball tucked under his arm, racing toward the goal post. He was a few yards away when another player started sprinting toward him. Dani looked on as, out of nowhere, Duke appeared, taking down the opposing team member with a well timed tackle. The quarterback used his freedom to pick up the pace, racing to the post and the touchdown. The crowd erupted in a roar, the loud chorus of cheers drowning out the boo’s from the other side.
With only seconds left on the clock, the other team simply ran out the ball, leaving the score at 27 for them and 54 for the Black Hawks. Once the buzzer sounded, the fans really went wild, confetti spewed from somewhere above and the coach and Tim both ran out onto the field. Through the shower to colorful pieces of paper, Dani could make out the outline of a gigantic trophy being carted onto the field.
“And there you have it folks! The Black Hawks are taking home the trophy yet again!”
You could hardly hear the announcer over the yelling. The excitement that swept through the crowd was contagious. Danielle jumped up and down, smiling and yelling right along with the rest of the team. She was jostled just a little as the benched players ran out to engulf the ones that were on the field.
The Black Hawks huddled close as a team, all trying to lay one finger on the trophy. There were smiles all around. The guys were throwing their helmets down onto the ground, reveling as cheerleaders popped open bottles of champagne to spray them with. In a rough tumble, a group of players lifted a gigantic jug of sports drink, and poured the contents over their hugging coaches heads. Through the wall of bodies a figure broke through, Duke carried his helmet in his hand, his face nearly crackling with the force of his smile.
“Hey,” he said simply, “We won.”
“You better had.” Danielle laughed. “We’re gonna have two mouths to feed soon. And babies are not cheap.”
They embraced, Duke squeezing her in the tightest hug she’d ever felt. When they kissed, Dani felt all her worries melt away. This was right. Duke was right. Everything was good.
In seven months, when she turned thirty, Dani knew that she didn’t have a thing to worry about. The way Duke placed a gentle hand over her swelling belly told her that. The way he looked at her with eyes that held nothing but pride.
“Love you, Bilson.” He said, breaking their kiss.
“Love you more.”
