I glanced to my right. “Tim and Bill, I’d like to introduce you to Malaysia.”
Bill and Tim waved. “Hello, Malaysia.”
“Hello, nice meeting you both,” she replied.
Abe approached the counter. “What would you like to order, miss?”
“Abe, she will have a Cosmo. Whatever else she’s ordering add to my tab.”
Abe winked at me and smiled. He turned his attention back to Malaysia. “All right. Miss, would you like to see a menu?”
“Yes.”
“I’ll grab your drink in the meantime.”
She smiled.
“Ethan, is it?”
I tried to hold back the laughter. She knew my name. “Yes.”
“That wasn’t necessary. But thank you.”
I placed my hand on my broad chest. “It’s my pleasure.”
I didn’t want to crowd her. I turned my attention to Tim. “Any special plans this weekend?”
Tim sipped his beer. “If sleep counts, yes.”
We both laughed.
“Are you working this weekend?”
“Yeah, tomorrow at ten in the morning. Off Sunday. Not sure the last time I had a weekend off.” I rubbed my brow, trying to remember.
“If you can’t remember, Ethan, it’s been too long.”
“Agreed.”
Bill rose to his feet, tossing a few bills on the bar countertop. “Gentleman, have a good night. Malaysia, enjoy your evening.”
“You, too.”
Bill waved. “Ethan, I will see you at work tomorrow.”
“Be safe, Bill. See you tomorrow.”
Abe returned, placing a steaming hot plate before Malaysia. She’d ordered grill chicken, broccoli, and a baked potato.
“Ethan, here is your meal. You both enjoy.”
“Thank you,” Malaysia and I responded, respectively.
She rocked the knife back and forth, separating the chicken into squares. Malaysia slipped the meat past her purple-colored lips. My tongue slid forward in an effort to lick my lips. I needed to stop watching her in a lustful manner. I was sure it was creepy. It was obvious I was attracted to her. Very seldom did I enjoy the smell of roses. I couldn’t recollect the last time I’d had sex. Apparently, it wasn’t that memorable if I couldn’t remember.
“Um, just as good as it was for lunch the other day.” She smiled. Her beautiful oval eyes made contact with mine.
I cleared my throat to find my voice. “Do you come here often?”
“No, early this week a few coworkers wanted to try someplace new. The food is pretty good.”
“Are you a fixture on the wall?” She gestured.
“No, but police officers, firefighters, and doctors frequent the bar.”
I placed a sliver of steak into my mouth.
“Do you fall into that category?” she asked.
I grinned. “Yes.”
“Excuse me, Dr. Daniels.” Tim’s heavy hand patted my shoulder.
“Tim, leaving so soon?”
He shrugged on his jacket. “I have a date with my bed.”
I laughed. “Good seeing you. See you next time.”
“Malaysia, have a good night. Don’t let Ethan, get you into trouble.”
“I won’t.”
I glared at Tim. “What the fuck!” I mouthed.
Tim chuckled, turned on his heels, then walked away.
I smirked. “Malaysia, don’t listen to Tim. I’m not trouble.”
I glanced toward the other end of the bar. I didn’t wait for Malaysia to respond. I needed to change the subject. Abe was taking another order. He strolled back to the computer. “Abe, when you get a moment.”
“Sure, Ethan, I’ll be right over.
Malaysia and I ate in silence. Laughter and loud chatter surrounded around us.
“Ethan, what can I get for you?”
“Abe, please bring Malaysia and I another drink.”
“Two Cosmos coming right up.” He snickered.
Malaysia and I chuckled.
“You said you aren’t trouble but you want to keep my drinks flowing?”
I smiled. “Relaxed, yes. Drunk, no.”
Her eyebrows rose. “Relaxed?”
I ran my hand over my stubbled face. “Malaysia, we are just talking. Unless you had something else in mind.”
We held each other’s gaze.
“Is this how you pick up women?”
“Sometimes, but I rarely take an interest in their day. How was your day?”
She sipped the new drink Abe placed in front of her.
“My day was long. How about yours, Dr. Daniels?”
I smirked over the rim of my new glass of beer. “It wasn’t the best day. I lost a patient.”
Her upward turned lips fell. “Sorry to hear that.”
“I’m supposed to be one of the best doctors in my field.”
“Let’s see what patients are saying about you on Health Grades.”
She whipped out her phone running an internet search. “Hm, it says here you are polite and you have the best bedside manner.”
We laughed.
“Oh, look at you in the stark white doctor coat. Handsome. You have that Adonis look about you. You are tall. What is your height?”
“I’m six-two.” How tall are you?”
“I’m five-five.” Can I continue?”
I nodded. “By all means.”
“You have the perfect curly blond hair, angular jawline, dreamy blue eyes, long eyelashes, and semi-slender nose. Yeah, I’d say you are just about every woman’s dream man.” She smiled arrogantly.
“But not yours. What is it? You don’t date white men?”
“It’s not that. I don’t have time to date. I’m financially assisting my family right now. Maybe one day my knight in shining armor can sweep me off my feet. However, it isn’t now.”
“I understand. I was telling Tim I don’t remember the last time I had the weekend off. My schedule is demanding. I don’t have time for a woman.”
Malaysia pushed her plate forward, bringing her half glass of Cosmo closer. “What about the occasional hookup?” She stared into her glass.
“I’d make time for the occasional hook up with you.”

“Excuse me, sir. How can I help you? This is a private venue,” I stated.
The man didn’t respond he stood, gazing out the window. The sunlight poured into the center of the room. Two men from either side of the room walked toward me out of the shadows.
“Charles, Michael, that will be all,” the man said, waving his hand in the air.
“Robert!” I erupted, strutting toward him.
I glanced over my shoulder. The doors closed behind the men after they exited.
My stomach twisted. Running my hands down the front of my dress, I walked beside him.
“How are you?” he asked, peering at me with a sly smile.
“Robert, I told you it was over a few months ago,” I affirmed, pounding my fist at my side.
He gazed into my brown eyes. His strong, eager baby blue eyes told me all I needed to know. He ran his fingers through his short blonde hair then pulled me into his arms, slamming my body against his crisp expensive, dark, blue suit. Robert leaned down, thrusting his lips against mine full of need, desire, and pain.
Sadness filled his eyes. “I missed you baby,” he murmured.
I was like a cooked noodle in his arms. Where was my strength to resist him? I pulled back from him, slightly. “Robert, I thought we agreed to stop seeing each other.”
“No, you told me we had to stop because of your new friend Adam,” he said dismissively.
“Baby, you know I can make him disappear just-like-that,” he replied, snapping his fingers.
My heart plummeted and my eyes widened.
“Baby, we’ve been together for over ten years. It doesn’t work lik
e that,” he said, flashing his beautiful white teeth.
He pressed his handsome pink lips against mine again. “Stop the foolishness and let’s go back to the way things were, just me and you.”
I pushed back from him, turning to the window. It became difficult not to look at him. My sad eyes pierced his.
“Robert, I don’t understand why you are doing this. We discussed this matter before. You’re in politics following in your father’s footsteps. Your father’s image of a wife for you is not me!”
“Yeah, I’m following in his footsteps like you wanted too right?” his voice raised.
I cut my eyes back to the window and tugged my lower lip.
“Nicki, I know this is a rough time for you. I understand Samantha had her baby,” he said, stepping behind me. My legs threatened to buckle. Robert clutched my waist.
“Does he know about us?”
“No. Robert what would I tell him? That the only man I ever loved can’t make an honest woman out of me. If he does, he’ll never become the President of the United States.”
“Baby, I’ve been in love with you since the eleventh grade. You knew I’d give it up for you,” he said, running his lips over my hair.
My body shuttered in his arms. I was falling apart.
“Robert stop,” I sniffled, wiping the tears from my eyes.
He reached into his pocket, pulled out his handkerchief, and placed it in my hand.
“Did he ask you about starting a family yet?”
“In a roundabout way.”
“What did you tell him?”
“I said nothing. What was I supposed to say? Adam, I don’t want kids because I had a difficult pregnancy and my baby was delivered stillborn at six months. I just can’t go through that again!”
I turned in his arms, clinging to him, wrapping myself in his arms. “Have you visited her grave?”
“Yes, on her birthday like I do every year. Only difference is I go alone instead of with you.”
He caressed my face. His empty eyes stared into mine. “Baby, I need you.”
“Robert, we have to move on with our lives. Adam is in love with me. He wants forever with me.”
“And I don’t?” he roared.
I pushed back from him, attempting to walk away. He grabbed my hand.
“Robert, the problem was never if we loved each other whole heartedly! You have to carry out your family’s legacy. You’re the Republican’s best hope. You, will become the next President of the United States.
I told you at the lake that day you would have to give me up. The state of Georgia wouldn’t have allowed you to win the Senate seat if you married a black woman. I did what I had to do. I couldn’t stand in the way of your destiny.” I was heartbroken all over again. My air ways threatened to close. I needed to leave.
“Good day, Senator Chandler!” I stormed out of the room.
“Bye for now, Nicki.”
