Harte's Peak Page 17

by Maria Michaels

He dug inside the sack tied around Stin for the boxed ring. The finest setting a public servant could afford. And fortunately, for him, the ring he’d seen Vera admiring many times in the past. He’d never done this before and couldn’t believe he was about to do it now, and so publicly.

But as he glanced around, he saw the faces of his friends—so many friends, more than he ever deserved. Even Tagg and Lonnie grinned from ear to ear. Guys who never thought he’d settle down.

“Vera, I love you more than I have words to say. Right now, I wish I was a poet and not a cop because that’s what you deserve. But if you’ll have me, I would love for you to be my wife.” He held the boxed ring in his shaking hands.

Vera laughed through tears. She tugged him up to a standing position and held his face in her hands. “I’d love to be your wife. I love you, Deputy. Even if you won’t let me speed.”

“She said yes!” Lexi shouted to the crowd, which erupted in spontaneous applause.

“Kiss! Kiss!” Jack began the chant until the café was filled with the sounds of their friends.

Nobody had to ask him twice. Ryan gazed into the blue eyes of his fiancée, eyes that reflected what he felt in his heart. He pulled her close, bent down and kissed her sweet lips. Not knowing what the future held for them—whether they would have children or not—felt like an adventure, not a death sentence.

He looked forward to waking up next to her every day for the rest of his life as they faced the uncertain future, their common faith a thread of gold that wove them together in the larger story of love and grace.
