Janice was having a fit in the high chair because she did not want the cereal the nanny had given her and Joel had emptied his bowl onto the table. Mrs. Morgan and Elise were trying to get them to calm down but her stubborn daughter was having none of it.

“I will deal with her, thanks.” She passed Jeremy to Elise and moved towards her daughter whose bottom lip was wobbling. “You want to explain to mommy why you are being so naughty this morning?” she asked her softly as she used a napkin to wipe her face.

“Want pancake mommy and want daddy.”

“Not necessarily in that order,” Cara said with a sigh. “Daddy had to go to an early meeting this morning sweetie so when he calls you can talk to him and you will be seeing him later. Now Mrs. Morgan and Elise prepared this tasty bowl of cereal for you and your brother and we are going to show our appreciation by eating every bit aren’t we sweetie?”

“Yes mommy,” she said in a subdued voice.

“Okay baby girl eat up and then go and get your bath.” She turned to her son who was picking the bits of soggy cereal off his table top. “Could you be so kind as to get him another bowl?” she asked Mrs. Morgan.

Very soon the chaos in their sitting room was averted and Cara sat on one of the chairs feeding Jeremy as the other two children ate their breakfast quietly and without fuss. Jennifer came in shortly to take Jeremy from her to give him his bath and the other children were carted off to their bathrooms to be given baths as well. Cara used the time to tidy up the sitting room and straighten the place up. She knew it was not her job but she had told Jennifer that the children were hers and they had made the mess so she did not see the harm in helping out and besides she had not been born into wealth.

With a satisfied smile she looked around the room and then went to see what her children were doing.

  Chapter 14

“Want princess!” Janice said jumping up and down on the bed.

“Of course you do honey,” Cara said dryly picking up the dainty pale pink dress with the sparkling tiara. Last year for Halloween they had been babies so this year it would be their first official celebration where they would get dressed up and actually go around the neighborhood asking for candies and seeing the other kids dressed up as well. The store had sent over different costumes for them to choose from and Joel had told them that he wanted the pirate costume complete with the eye patch. They had gone to the pumpkin patch with their father and had brought home several huge pumpkins and had sat in the kitchen while Caleb and a couple of the maids cut out the eyes and mouth and decorated the pumpkin. They had also been given the privilege of decorating the pumpkins with their crayons and had shown their father as soon as he came home what they had done. So now they were very excited about Halloween.

Matthew had promised to come home early so they could hit the streets of the exclusive neighborhood and knock on doors with their children for candies. Cara had every intention of taking Jeremy along as well.

“What do you think of this for Jeremy?” Cara asked the twins holding up a white costume that looks like a sheep.

“It’s a sheep mommy!” Janice said clapping her hands in delight.

“A white sheep,” Joel added nodding his head.

“Okay so your baby brother will be dressed like a sheep.” Cara said kissing them both on the cheeks. She nodded as the nannies came inside the room to get them for their afternoon nap.

Marissa was picking up Christine and Daniel to join them and also Janet would be coming along with Denzel. The adoption was still not decided on yet but they were sharing the baby for the time being and it was working out well.

“How is William?” Cara asked her sister in law casually as she got up to put Jeremy in his crib. She had just fed him and burped him and he was nodding off to sleep. She had gone to the center earlier in the day and had come back early to see to the children’s costumes, not wanting to leave everything to Jennifer, even though she would not have minded one bit.

“He is good,” she nodded folding the blanket her nephew had just used. “We have been seeing a bit of each other.”

“And yet you have not invited him over for dinner.” Cara said softly meeting her gaze.

  “We are taking it slow.”

“You mean you are taking it slow.” Cara said shrewdly. “Honey don’t you think it is time you start thinking about yourself for a change?”

“I don’t know what you mean.” Jennifer tidied up the baby’s dresser automatically trying to avoid the conversation. “I think we need to order some more baby oil for Jeremy.”

“See what I mean?” Cara said with a sigh. “Honey you are completely committed to these children, so much so that you are not willing to have a social life because you are always at their beck and call.”

She put away a stuffed bear and sat on one of the plush chairs in the nursery. “I never wanted children when I was married to Brent.” She admitted with a sad smile. “I told myself I did not want to be a mother but when the twins came, I fell head over heels in love with them and then Jeremy,” her gaze went over to the little boy fast asleep onto his stomach, his blonde curls brushed to shiny perfection by one of the nannies who had given him a bath. “They are so beautiful and so perfect that I find myself regretting that I never had any.” She looked up at her sister in law. “I hope you don’t mind my wanting to be around them so much.”

“Are you kidding me?” Cara asked her softly coming over to sit next to her. “I could not have asked for a more devoted auntie. But all I am saying is that you need a life of your own as well. Invite him for dinner and let us get to meet him.”

  “I will.”

  *****

“I told her to invite him to dinner.” Cara said to her husband softly as they made their way up the well lit street.

There were high electronic gates with security cameras and huge pumpkins with scary faces on the posts and on the ground. The others were walking behind them as Marissa pointed out several celebrities’ houses to Janet and Christine. They had asked how they were going to knock on doors when they were not able to go inside the grounds but Jennifer had told them that the Logan’s name is a sure gate opener. They had already been admitted to two of the towering two story houses and chatted with the occupants there and the twins had been given candies and other treats to send them on their way. They had also been invited to a barbecue at the end of the week.

“I have been trying to tell her to invite him over for several weeks now,” Matthew told her, his attention diverted as his daughter pulled at his hand. “Yes sweetie?”

“I need candy please?” she had been carrying her basket like a little lady patiently waiting for the chance to eat the candies in them.

“Me too!” Joel piped up ready to dig into his basket.

“Just one,” Cara told them firmly. “And remember that we are going to have to brush in order to get rid of the sweets between the teeth.”

“Okay mommy!” Janice said enthusiastically as she took out a chocolate treat.

They had reached halfway down the length of the street before the two children started complaining that they were tired.

“My tummy aches daddy,” Janice complained pulling on her daddy’s hand.

“Okay princess I think it’s time for us to go on home,” he said lifting her into his arms.

By the time they got home Janice was sleeping in her father’s arms and Joel was nodding off. Jennifer had come forward to take the stroller from Cara and she had taken the little boy into her arms and carried him back to the manor. They had chosen not to drive part of the way but had figured the walk would be good for them.

They said their goodbyes to their friends and watched as they drove off before going inside the house.

  *****

Cara was the first one to hear the cries. They had gone to bed late with putting the children to bed and making sure their teeth were brushed and they had settled down to sleep.

She stirred as she heard it again. At firs
t she thought she was dreaming but then the cries persisted. She jumped up and looked at the children’s monitor and saw the video of Janice sitting up in bed and crying. She shook her husband awake and jumped off the bed grabbing her robe and belting it around her waist. She did not look back to see if he was following her but raced into the little girl’s room.

“Honey what’s wrong?” Cara moved over to her bed and sat on the side of it, feeling her forehead. “You are burning up!”

“My ear aches mommy,” she said wiping the back of her hand across her cheeks. “Daddy,” she said reaching out a hand to him. He came over and took it, his eyes scanning her tear stained face.

“She is running a temperature.” Cara told him. “And she said her ear is aching. I think we need to take her to the emergency room.”

“My little princess not feeling well?” he lifted the little girl into his arms, alarmed at how hot she was. “We are going to take you to the doctor to get you all better.” He kissed her forehead and felt the clamminess of her skin. “Call Doctor Bainbridge and tell him we are coming in.” he instructed his wife. “Okay baby let’s put you into something warm.” He went into her closet and took down a fall jacket for her and put it on before putting on some socks and not even bothering to put on shoes. He pulled a cap over her curls and grabbed a blanket to take with him. He took her to their suite where he set her on the bed and quickly put some clothes on. Cara was already dressed and she had woken up Jennifer to apprise her of the situation so the woman was in the hallway downstairs when they got there. She handed her brother his jacket and also Cara and a set of keys. “Let me know what is going on. I will check on the kids.” She said pressing a gentle kiss on her niece’s burning forehead.

They waited in the room anxiously as the doctor did his examination. Cara had traveled in the back of the vehicle and had monitored her daughter’s temperature while her husband made good time to the hospital.

Her hand crept over and held her husband’s as the doctor peered into her ear and inside her mouth. He took her temperature and smiled at the little girl as she looked at him.

He came over to them and took off his gloves. He had instructed the nurse to give her something for the fever. “Just as I suspected severe ear infection. I am going to give you a prescription for some antibiotics and the pain she is feeling now. She is not going to want to eat much for a couple of days but try to get her to drink some soup and plenty of liquids.”

“Is she going to be okay?” Cara asked him anxiously, her hand still holding tight to her husband’s

“She will be,” he assured them.

“Thanks Blake.” Matthew said shaking his hand.

“You are welcome,” he said with a smile. He hesitated and then spoke again. “Mind if I have a word with you Matthew?”

“I will go and sit with our daughter.” Cara said getting up and moving over to the bed.

Dr. Bainbridge took the seat Cara had just vacated. “There is a patient in intensive care that needs an operation badly. It’s an elderly woman who has no children or any significant family members but she is only in her late sixties. She has kidney problems but is not able to afford the surgery. I thought we could do the operation without asking her for anything but we are not able to do so.”

“So you are asking me to fund the operation?” Matthew asked him.

“I would not go as far as that. The doctors and some of the nurses here have been trying to find ways of getting donations to help her out but we have fallen short.” He sighed. “She has been in and out of the hospital for the past couple of months and I am afraid if she does not get the surgery she is not going to make it.”

“Sign me up for whatever is left,” Matthew told him immediately.

“Thanks Matt. I am looking forward to beating you at golf on Saturday,” he stood up and held out a hand.

“Not if I beat you first,” Matthew took his hand and shook it vigorously. “Have someone call my office in the morning and the check will be made available.”

  “Thank you.”

  *****

“And the nurse gave me lollipop,” Janice was proud to tell her aunt the next morning as she was propped up in bed and being fed some savory pumpkin broth that Caleb had prepared. Matthew had stayed back a little bit to make sure she was okay before going off to the office and told his wife to call him if anything was wrong. Cara was not going into the center for the day even though she knew that Jennifer and the nannies were capable of taking care of the children. Janice was feeling much better and had told her brother all about her visit to the hospital. The antibiotic had done its job and she had gotten a good night’s sleep and woke up at eight this morning.

“She did huh?” Jennifer had a twinkle in her eyes as she wiped the little girl’s chin.

“Mommy said I could not eat it,” she said with a pout. “Can I after I finish my soup?”

“May I,” Jennifer corrected her automatically. “We will see.” She turned around as Joel came into the room looking fresh and clean from a recent bath and with his thumb in his mouth as he looked at his sister in bed. They had always played together so Jennifer guessed he was feeling a bit lonesome without her. “You okay sweetie?”

He shook his head no. “Want my sister.”

“How about you come in here and play with your sister on her bed? You could bring in some of your toys and you both could play with them on the bed. How about that?”

He nodded his head vigorously and raced back to go and get his toys.

“Okay baby girl let’s finish your soup.”

  *****

Cara flopped down on the soft grass wearily, her heart racing as she tried to recover her breath. Her husband had raced in front of her and was sitting loftily on the grassy knoll waiting for her to join him. “You are out of shape baby,” he told her with a smug grin. “When we first met you could probably take me but now I really don’t know.”

Cara gave him a dirty look and dropped down onto the grass her hands behind her head. “Try giving birth to three children and being a wife to a very demanding husband, then you can talk to me.” She told him as he leaned over her.

“Ouch,” he said with a grimace. “That’s a low blow.” He used the edge of his t-shirt to wipe the sweat from her brow. They had started back jogging again and both were reminded of when they had first met. It seemed like so long ago. “I take it all back,” he told her huskily. “I remember behaving like a schoolboy and waiting anxiously for the night to end so I could be with you.”

“I felt the same way.” Cara murmured reaching up to touch his strong jaw. His ash blond hair was clinging to his wet forehead and there were sweat glistening on his arms. The weather was chilly but their body temperature had risen and they had not started to feel the cold yet. She reached up and pulled his head down to hers, her mouth touching his as he deepened the kiss.

  *****

“What are you doing?” she asked as she wandered into the kitchen. It was the smell of coffee brewing and something else that had woke her up. He had taken her back to the cabin late last night and they had fallen asleep a few minutes after they had reached there.

It was the end of the first week of November and after the scare with Janice and him not too long recovering from the car accident he had figured they could use a break so he had told his sister that he was taking her to the cabin to be alone with her. Jennifer had told him that she would be happy to supervise the children. So he had had one of the maids pack a bag for them and had come from work and eaten and then they had been on their way.

He had leaned over and watched her sleeping, her mouth slightly opened and her long lashes fanning her cheek. He had gotten up slowly to make sure the logs in the fireplace in the living room was enough and had gone out to get some more. The weather had become freezing especially in a place that was surrounded mostly by trees and dense foliage.

“Making us breakfast,” he turned to look at her and realized that she
had washed her face and comb her hair into her usual ponytail but was still wearing her pretty sheer white nightgown. She had put on a robe but had left it open and he could see shadows of her breasts through the see through material. “Grab some plates in the cupboard. I made us pancakes.”

She did as she was told and passed the plates to him. He put the pancakes on them and added strawberries, pouring the maple syrup generously over them.

“Want me to pour the coffee?” she asked him as he took the plates to the table.

  “Would you?”

She poured the coffee and he got some orange juice from the fridge. He held out a chair for her and she took her seat waiting until he was seated before she said grace.

“I like this,” she murmured eating the pancakes in appreciation.

“You mean the pancakes?” he asked her in amusement.

“I mean us being here together like this,” she lifted her foot and put it on his chair, her toes wriggling dangerously near to his pubic area.

“I thought you would,” he reached down a hand to clamp onto her foot and preventing it from venturing further. “Behave.” He warned her.

“And if I don’t?” she arched her brow at him.

  “There will be consequences.”

“I like consequences.” She told him saucily.

“I am sure you do.” He still held her foot firmly in his hand allowing them to finish their meal in peace.

“How about going for a walk?” he suggested as soon as they had finished eating.

  “Isn’t it freezing out?”

“That is why we have coats. Come on.”

The air was bracing and clean. Matthew pulled her close beside him as they made their way through the thick overgrowth and onto the cobbled path. The place was quiet with only the sound of the stream babbling and the wind whistling between the leaves. The leaves had started to change and present a colorful background of burnt orange and yellow and looked great against the brilliant blue of the sky. They made the walk in silence admiring the calls of nature and the sound of the leaves beneath their feet. She was comfortable with him, Cara realized. Even when they were not speaking there was still a connection between them, a bond that could never be broken.
