  Chapter One

As the sun was setting that fateful night, Gene Daniels looked up and watched as a long black limo came down his driveway. He straightened up, grabbed a rag, and began wiping the grease from his hands. He ran a garage on the outside of Red Wing, Minnesota and had for some time.

Something in his chest seized as the long car got closer and he turned to look at his daughter. “Grace, he called out her name softly with dread.

His daughter looked up at her dad and smiled. Her smile slid off her face at the concern on his. “What is it dad? What’s wrong?”

“Grace I want you to run and don’t look back. Don’t you dare come back here,” Gene told her harshly.

Grace frowned and tried to look beyond him but he stood in front of her blocking the door. “You go now and don’t you come back here. Go out the back way and don’t be seen, you can’t be seen. Promise me?”

“Dad, what’s going on?” Her frown deepened.

“Revenge baby girl. Revenge twenty-five years in the making.” He took her hands, “Darling girl, I know you want to stay but I want you to live. I want you to find love someday, so run, run to live another day. Please go now and don’t look back. Never come back here. Remember I love you.”

“Dad, I don’t want to go,” she pleaded.

“Go and don’t come back. Be careful and don’t be seen,” Gene repeated he heard the car stop. “Be safe child.”

Grace ran to the back door but she couldn’t leave her father. Instead, she ducked down and watched as four men came into the garage.

Her father stood tall as he addressed the better dressed man, “Vitya Konovic, it’s been a while since I last saw you.”

The man snarled. “Twenty five years you sniveling coward. It’s been twenty five years since you gunned down my brother, Ilya in cold blood.”

Gene began shaking his head. “It wasn’t cold blood. He raped and strangled my sister. That was why I went after him.”

“I don’t care what he did!” Vitya shouted. “He didn’t deserve to die for taking a piece of ass.”

“She was my fifteen year old sister, you bastard.” Gene snarled. “He raped her then strangled her when she began to scream for help.”

“And you shot him down like a dog in the street,” Vitya said quietly. “Then instead of staying behind and taking your punishment like a man, you fucking ran away.”

“Punishment?” Gene laughed aloud. “I would have been shot in the back by the same cowardice you share with your brother. I left in the hopes that my family would be safe from your vengeance but they weren’t were they?” Gene shook his head with distaste. “Two days later as I boarded the boat that would bring me to this country, I was told my parents, my other sister, and both my brothers were dead, shot down on the land they farmed without even a chance to defend themselves. Who was the cowardly bastard then?”

“It took me this long to find you, you bastard.” Vitya sneered. “My brother is long dead but I will get my revenge on the man who killed him. My father died but before he did, he made me vow to find you and end your line. Well, I found you and now, I will keep my vow to my father and end you.”

With that, Vitya Konovic raised the gun in his hand and shot Gene right in the head.

A gasp resounded in the garage. Vitya turned and began searching the room for anyone else.

All he saw however, was the back door slowly closing. His eyes narrowed and he motioned for his men to come with him.

They raced through the garage and pushed open the door spilling out into the night. In the dark, they paused and listened for any movement but they heard nothing. The first man motioned for the second man to go in the direction of the left while he took the right. They both armed themselves and began to comb the woods for anyone who might have seen what just happened.

Grace raced through the woods crying and stumbling. She tripped over a tree limb and crashed on the ground. She didn’t want to get up for a moment she was in so much pain. Most of her life it had just been her and her father. Her mother died when she was a child of four but Gene had been there for her. He used to sing her lullabies in Russian but she never knew why. She never knew her dad was Russian, to her he was her dad, and nothing else mattered to her.

Then to hear the other man say what he did, she couldn’t believe him. Her father wouldn’t ever harm another human being. He just wouldn’t.

Then she heard footsteps coming toward her. She panicked and got up running away. But they must have heard her because the footsteps began running as well. Grace ran as fast and as far as she could in the protection of the woods but even the woods ran out on her.

When she hit the open, she turned around and looked behind her, she knew she couldn’t go back there. Those men had guns and they had killed her father in cold blood. She turned around again, and searched for somewhere to hide.

Not far from where she stood, she saw a bar. Neon lights and loud music drew her. Keeping in the shadows, she made her way closer as she searched for a place to hide. As she got closer to the building, the music from inside got louder but she didn’t care she wasn’t going inside anyway.

Looking at the vehicles in the parking lot, she found herself reaching out and checking the doors. They were all locked. Then she heard a noise from behind her and she squatted down behind an older motorcycle. It was a 1964 Indian Chief. The bike might have been an older model but it was in pristine shape. Someone had taken care to restore the bike to the original shape and it looked brand new. She knew of bikes and cars as she’d learned it all from her dad.

When she saw the two men creeping out of the wooded area, she panicked. She knew she had to get out of here and fast before they found her and shot her down like they did her father.

She searched the bike and found the wire harness. She hoped and prayed she knew enough about the wiring that she could get the bike started and get the hell out of that parking lot before the men got close enough to kill her.

Reaching into her pocket, she took out the small jackknife her father had given her when she was twelve. Her hands were shaking as she stripped the two wires she needed. Before she started the loud engine, she pushed the bike behind the bar. She needed the element of surprise to get away. In the shadows, she worked quickly but had to keep looking around the corner to check on where the men were. They were getting closer but they didn’t know where she was at the moment.

Grace wiped the tears away from her eyes and took a deep breath. Her shaking calmed down briefly and she touched the two wires together. The engine sparked to life with a low growl.

It took her a few minutes to get used to the bike but she knew she didn’t have a whole lot of time. She had to escape the parking lot and the two men out there that would kill her to keep their secrets.

Gunning the engine, she shot out from behind the building. The engine screamed and she coul
d see the men running toward her as she tore out of hiding.

One man aimed and took a shot. The gunshot missed her but not by much, but it did bring men pouring out of the bar. She couldn’t be worried about them as she revved the engine and got out of there. Another shot was lobbed her way and she felt the sting as the bullet grazed her shoulder.

But Grace knew she couldn’t stop. She had to get away or she would die right there. She wanted to live.

Barron “Red” Valerian sat in a booth with his VP Leniod, and his Enforcer, Koyla, nursing a beer as they waited for another brother bringing information to them. The brother, Anton had called earlier and he didn’t sound good. He’d just seen a face he never thought he would here in the wilds of Minnesota.

Red and his men had come here a number of years ago from the western borders of the Siberian area of Russia. Back there in their homeland was a ruling family that did nothing but take. The people around them had almost nothing left, thanks to the Konovic family.

They decided to start all over in a new country. Coming here, they blended in and built themselves up in an MC. They chose Red Wing because it reminded them of home.

He glanced out the window and saw something that made him frown. He saw two men coming out of the woods next to the bar, he could see the weapons in their hands, and they appeared to be searching for someone, going from car to car in the parking lot.

Red turned his head and looked at where he’d parked his bike. Then his frown deepened. His bike wasn’t where he’d parked it. He looked over at the two men beside him. Then he heard an engine turn over. It was one he recognized well. He should heard that sweet roar and rumble every time he’d started his bike. People might not realize it but each bike made its own unique sound as the engine came to life.

He was sliding out of the booth, then heard his engine scream as his bike shot around the corner of the lot.

One of the men lurking there raised his gun and took a shot.

Red and the others were on their feet and rushing toward the door. When they hit the outside of the bar, they saw his bike rushing from the scene and heard a couple more shots taken toward the rider. Red raised his own weapon and took a shot at the man shooting at his bike. Once that man was hit, the other turned to protect himself. His men got in a couple of shots at the second man and he turned and fled back into the woods.
