  Fern looks at picture of LUCI.

  FERN

  All that for killing her?

  (beat)

  If he’s willing to cut us in, there’s

  more at stake here than keeping his

  new wife from finding out about his

  old wives or his scams.

  Donald avoids her gaze.

  DONALD

  Probably.

  (beat)

  He didn’t tell me what, just that he

  had a spot of bad luck. Something he

  needed to move before the wedding.

  FERN

  Bad luck and Artie go hand in hand.

  I’d rather have our fee--

  (beat)

  He doesn’t have it, does he?

  DONALD

  He’s got it. Just can’t get to it if

  we don’t take out the broad before his

  little . . . problem . . . surfaces.

  FERN

  So if we don’t stop Luci Seymour, we

  don’t get paid?

  Donald nods. Fern runs her finger the length of the AK-47

  and sighs.

  FERN (CONT’D)

  It’s not an Uzi, but I expect it’ll

  get the job done.

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

  Pauline Baird Jones has been committing fictional murder since the first Gulf War and is the award-winning author of eight novels of action-adventure, suspense, romantic suspense and comedy-mystery, and several non-fiction books. A two-time Romantic Times Reviewer’s Choice winner, she has also been awarded an IPPY bronze medal in 2008 for The Key, an EPPIE in 2007 for Out of Time, and the Dorothy Parker award in 1998.

  Pauline is a member of The Final Twist, the Houston mystery writer’s group, and EPIC, The Electronically Published Internet Connection. Originally from Wyoming, she and her husband moved from New Orleans to Texas before Katrina. Though happily married for most of 32 years, her husband wants an autopsy if he dies suddenly.
