As well as getting a blast of fresh air, she also needed to clear her head.

The unexpected demise of Annelie Kyra Fernström combined with the discovery of the material the serial killer had left behind was perplexing, to say the least.

In addition to the information about the men’s background she was also intrigued by the results of the autopsy report. It was a detailed document which, according to standard format, was divided into four sections: External examination, Internal examination, Expert opinion and, finally, Cause of death.

Sanna noted that apart from the deep wound in the woman’s thigh, the findings in the external examination were very similar to those of Åke Pettersson.

Sanna found it difficult to assimilate the internal injuries. The autopsy revealed burn wounds and festering broken skin in the vagina and anal canal. She had read and reread it so many times that she could almost recite the text by heart:

“… burn wounds and fissures in the hymen and rear commissure to large lacerations of the vagina and rectum which continue into the abdominal cavity. The latter occurs mainly if a tool or hand is used…

… stab and cuts are concentrated on the genitalia. This was caused by an attack of a sadistic nature…”

Sanna put her foot down on the accelerator and sped off further and further into the deserted countryside. She didn’t want to expend any more energy pondering Annelie Kyra Fernström’s fate.

  DESPAIR

In the quiet suburb of Djursholm in Stockholm a young woman is brutally beaten to death. Criminal Inspector SANNA JOHANSSON and her colleague KALLE KARLSSON are assigned to investigate the case, which leads them directly into the exclusive salons of the Swedish upper class. Here we meet BÖRGE SVENSON from the venerable Svenson family who lives a double life of unimaginable proportions.

Every weekend, since the murder of her daughter, SUSANNE ALDHAMO gets disguised and ventures out in search of her killer among the busy pubs and bars of Stockholm. But when she finds the person she is looking for will she have the courage to carry out her plan?

MIKAELA and SAMUEL and other passionately engaged youths start an action group called “Rosie the Riveter” to combat violence against women via social media. Their calls to action have unexpected consequences. A media storm soon develops when women begin to describe their experiences on placards for everyone to read. The political fall out tests their friendship to the full.

During their investigation, Sanna Johansson and Kalle Karlsson are met by stiff resistance. Why does their colleague, ANDERS SEGELSTRÖM, remove evidence? Can Sanna remain objective when she herself has been a victim of assault? And are Kalle Karlsson and her really just work colleagues?

Digging into the past proves a strain for everyone involved and the discovery of long buried secrets is devastating for the upper class family who will stop at nothing to keep up appearances.

DESPAIR is a gritty crime novel about human relationships and the violence endemic in our society. It is a standalone book that forms the first part of a trilogy.

Lourdes DazaGillman was born in Bolivia. While living in London during the 1970s she developed a passionate interest in the injustices faced by women around the world. However, her studies and observations were put on hold when she moved to Stockholm, Sweden, where she began a long career at Ericsson as an engineer. In 2005 Lourdes DazaGillman was elected to the board of Feministiskt Initiativ, a women’s movement, and was directly involved in the efforts to make FI a political force. She now had the opportunity to focus on causes close to her heart – raising women’s low wages, preventing men’s violence against women and helping children brought up under these circumstances.

Lourdes DazaGillman is also an artist. In 1969 she held her first exhibition in Oxford, England. In Stockholm she has exhibited oil paintings, sculpture and glassware.
