Fire of Betrayal

There was something about his tone, though. It sounded hopeful. He waited on my answer like it mattered to him.

I made my decision. And then, despite his crazy body heat, I got a grip and held on tight.

“I trust you, Logan. Do what you can.”

I didn’t have to see Logan’s face to know that made him happy. It was strange, but I could feel the happiness ripple through him. It didn’t make sense to me, but then again none of this made sense.

Logan gunned the motorcycle in the direction of the cliff. I closed my eyes and hung on. After that, time seemed to slow down and everything felt like it was happening in slow motion.

  Chapter Nine

  Logan

I can’t believe that Bree just said that she trusted me to drive off a cliff on my motorcycle. If only I’d had more time, I could have told her I wasn’t doing it to kill us, I was doing it to save us.

When the wolves figured out what I was doing, gunshots rang out in an attempt to kill us before we got to the edge. I hit the gas. The next thing you know, Bree and I were over the cliff and in free fall.

The first thing I did was grab her with my hands so that we’d be together as the bike fell away below us. She didn’t even scream.

As if on instinct, she squeezed her thighs against me, wrapping her legs around me. Instead of flailing or screaming, she held me. She trusted me.

Once I had a good grip on Bree and we were clear of the motorcycle, I shifted. It was easy to do because my dragon had been right there ready to go since the moment that I laid eyes on Bree. And also, because my dragon wanted to toast all the wolves.

My dragon roared to life with a puff of black smoke. The muscles in my back knotted and expanded as the wings sprouted and my body changed form.

I felt the surge of power ripple through my body with the familiar tingle of magic and pain. My thoughts grew cloudy for a moment and then the dragon fully emerged, taking over all of my senses.

Now I knew that Bree and I would be okay for now. I was able to hold onto Bree much more securely with my dragon claws than with my human hands.

She looked up at me in surprise for a moment and then she lost consciousness. That was probably just as well. I flew south, to a place I hadn’t visited in quite a while. A place I knew that we’d be safe.

  Chapter Ten

  Bree

I woke up on a bed. In a cave. A cave? What the hell? I sat up and sucked in a few breaths. Was I hurt? Or dead? I looked down at my body, but nothing felt injured and I didn’t see any blood.

In fact, I was in the same clothes I had on earlier, only they were torn and slightly singed. Singed? What had happened to me?

Memories started coming back to me in bits and pieces. No wait. Back up. If I woke up then I’m alive, and that can’t be right. I went over a cliff on a motorcycle with Logan.

None of this made sense. I tried to go over it again in my mind. We went over the cliff. I was holding on to Logan. We both fell.

And then I must have hallucinated or had a weird dream because I saw something so strange. It was like Logan changed into something else and flew off with me. Yes, flew, like he was some kind of hot pterodactyl. And maybe that was the case, because here I am in a bed in a cave like the Flintstones.

Was this hell? Or maybe I had a head injury. I felt around on my head but there weren’t any bumps or blood that I could feel. This place was so quiet. And where was Logan?

I looked around and saw Logan lying in a loveseat nearby. He heard me stir and sat up.

“What the hell’s going on here, Logan?”

“Whoa, easy, Bree. I can explain.” He said.

I rolled my eyes. “Sure you can. I’m interested in hearing how you explain why I’m in a weird cave after falling off a cliff.”

I decided I needed to get the hell out of here, like I should have in the first place earlier. I scooted over to the edge of the bed. Then I stood and tested out my balance. So far so good.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” Logan said. “You should rest for a few minutes.”

I waved him off. “Stop telling me what to do, sexy pterodactyl,” I said.

Logan gave me a quizzical look from his chair. He scooted forward but didn’t get up.

As far as I was concerned, nobody was getting the benefit of the doubt until I figured out what the hell was going on here. I did a double-take and couldn’t help but notice that he was wearing his motorcycle jacket and jeans without a t-shirt.

What happened to his shirt? It almost didn’t matter, because one look at those washboard abs and I nearly gave up my quest for reality in order to pursue an entirely different quest, reality be damned.

New plan. There was light streaking in from the left side of the room. That was probably the door. I had to get to the doorway or opening or portal or whatever it was at the far end of the room.

I guessed that opening in the room was my key to figuring out reality, whatever it may be. Maybe this was all a bad dream.

Instead of arguing, which would have been pointless anyway, Logan crossed the room and put his arm around me and steadied me so I could get to the doorway, which was nice of him.

The closer I got to the light, however, the slower I got until I broke free from Logan and crawled out to the ledge. That’s what it turned out to be. A ledge. My head swam. I wasn’t okay with heights.

Okay, so I was in a cave. Like hundreds of feet up in the air, like a fucking bird. I looked out on the landscape below me for a few minutes while my heart pounded with fear. Then I crawled backward until I was back in the main room.

Unsure of what to do next, I climbed onto a very comfortable looking brown suede couch nearby to figure out what to do next.

The room or nest or whatever it was, was comfortable and cozy despite its impossible and rustic setting. Logan settled back into the lazy boy recliner opposite the couch I was now sitting in. He seemed at home here. How was that possible?

Logan eyed me intensely as I processed. “Okay,” I said after a minute. “Now don’t take this the wrong way, but we both went over a cliff and now we’re alive and in this place. Right?”

He nodded. “How would I take that the wrong way?”

“Don’t worry,” I answered, “I’m getting to that part.” I took a deep breath. “When we went over the cliff, I had a weird dream. That you were like a giant bird. Carrying me through the air.”

He opened his gorgeous mouth to say something and I held up a hand to stop him. “Wait, wait. Before you try to tell me I’m crazy, I’d like to point out that we are now in what I can only describe as some sort of giant, um, cave nest.” I wrinkled up my face into a frown. “Is this place yours?”

  “Yes.” He answered.

I waited for him to expand on his answer, but he was frustratingly short on the details. It was annoying. I sighed and then picked another one of the random questions floating around in my consciousness. “How the hell did you get the couch up here anyway?”

“Is it my turn?” He asked.

“Sure,” I nodded. “I’d love to hear your explanation for all this. And if it’s that I’ve died and gone on to live in an alternate reality of the Flintstones, then I’m going to want one of those giant brontosaurus ribs, the ones that can barely fit on the car, okay?”

“The truth about what happened is going to sound really crazy, Bree. But I do have an explanation. And it’s not the Flintstones.”

I cocked an eyebrow. Get on with it, sexy pterodactyl man.

It was his turn to take a deep breath. “Okay. You’ve been through a lot and you look like you’re doing pretty well so far, so I’m just going to say it. I’m a dragon.”

I don’t know what I was expecting when Logan said he had an explanation for what was going on here, but that was not it.

“A dragon,” I repeated, not believing it. “Like a flying, fire-breathing Game-Of-Thrones type dragon?”

Logan laughed and crossed the room until he stood next t
o the couch where I was sitting. “May I?”

“Oh no you don’t,” I said. “You’re just fine in your seat over there. I don’t care how good you look without a shirt on. One of us is obviously crazy, and until I figure out which one of us it is, you just keep your distance.”

“Okay,” he said, retreating. “And to answer your question about whether I’m a Game-Of-Thrones type dragon, not exactly. I’m a dragon shifter. And before you ask any questions, that means I’m a man.”

He paused for effect, flashing an impish smile that sent a tingle of desire through my body. “Hopefully you’d figured that part out,” he said.

“Yes, I will admit that I noticed that,” I said, shifting in my seat to try to hide the growing wetness between my legs. “You’re a man. And a dragon. How does that work? Do you both share custody of the body?” Right now, I wanted a piece of that body myself.

“I’m both. I mean, they’re both me. It means I can change at will, to either dragon or man.”

  “No way,” I said.

“Do you wanna see the dragon?” He asked. There was tone in his voice that made me squirm for him.

I had never felt this way about a man before. I had to admit though, whether this was reality or a dream, I did want to see the dragon. If for no other reason than to verify what I thought I saw earlier, when the two of us went over the cliff.

“Yes, Logan. I’d like to see the dragon.” I smiled as I watched his jeans become a tent. It was good to see that I was having the same effect on him that he was having on me.

“Okay,” Logan said, his voice deep and sexy. “You asked for it.” He stood and did the very last thing I expected, shucking the last of his clothes until he stood there naked, his back to me.

My mouth literally fell open as I gaped at his muscled back and I wasted no time taking in all of the glory of that naked ass. My pussy ached seeing his bare, muscled body in front of me. I had to clench my thighs together to get a hold of myself and remember that one of us was crazy and it was probably the guy who thought he was a dragon.

As I stood there admiring his ass, his skin tone turned a dark green color and his body got bigger. In fact, he was expanding outward into the rest of the cave.

Instinctively, I got up and hid behind the couch, just in time. With a whoosh, he sprouted wings so big he could barely fit in the cave.

I couldn’t believe my eyes. I watched breathlessly, my heart hammering in my chest as Logan turned into something, well, something that was not Logan. Either I was the crazy one, or he was telling the truth about being able to turn into a literal dragon.

He turned his face away from me and roared. It was a literal roar, and it was unlike anything I had ever heard before.

The sound vibrated in my chest. It was loud and primal. It filled the cave until I could barely concentrate.

And then he breathed fire. Most of it went out through the mouth of the cave because of his careful aim. But the fire was still so bright that I had to look away, and I closed my eyes when I felt the heat blast hit my face.

He turned and grabbed a piece of granite rock decoration nearby. He brought it down with a grunt and smashed it to bits.

Fear gripped me. What I was seeing was impossible. I panicked for a moment until the dragon turned to face me with those familiar, glowing brown eyes. I looked into them and I knew it was Logan inside, and the fear melted away.

Then the dragon turned away from me and knelt down for a moment. When he turned back to me, he was Logan again.

And he was completely naked. I couldn’t help but stand from my position behind the couch to get a better look. He was grinning, clearly turning into a dragon didn’t bother him.

My eyes went down to his giant cock and I was nearly panting at the sight of that thing. And then I had to remind myself that he had just turned into a dragon. Had I lost touch with reality? Conflicting desires flooded my brain, but my body only wanted one thing.

“Did you like what you saw?” He asked. The only thing bigger than his cock was the grin on his face. He was clearly proud of himself.

That’s when I decided that if he was going to be the next in my long line of bad decisions regarding men, at least he was going to be worth it. Maybe playing Flintstones would be fun.

  Chapter Eleven

  Bree

Logan was back in human form and standing right in front of me. Completely naked, and with a wicked grin on his face. My eyes drifted down from his face to his washboard abs and then kept right on going.

I had wondered more than once what he looked like under those jeans, but wow, I didn’t have to guess anymore. He was huge. Between the grin on his face and his huge cock, I felt a throbbing between my legs that was taking over.

A minute ago, Logan was breathing fire, literally, and now he was right there standing in front of me like a snack I wanted to eat. My brain was still trying to process what I had just seen, but my body was another story. It was done processing. It wanted Logan.

My eyes made their way back up slowly to those smoldering brown eyes. I could see the hunger in them. A hunger that matched my own. I was practically panting.

He crossed to me, leaned down, and kissed me deeply. Hungrily. Our tongues danced, causing my entire body to tingle with desire for him.

As if hearing my thoughts, his hot hands grabbed my ass, exploring all of me through my jeans. Each touch brought a fresh wave of heat between my legs.

I hopped up and wrapped my legs around his waist. He continued kissing me while he carried me over to the bed in the middle of the room. Then he threw me down on it playfully and followed me down with a growl that nearly made me come.

No man had ever had this powerful of an effect on me. I wanted more. I got to my knees on the bed and took his now very erect cock in my mouth, barely.

He groaned with pleasure. I continued working it into my mouth, caressing him with my fingers. He was so hard.

Then he growled again and shoved me gently backward. “No,” he said gruffly, “it’s your turn.”

He kissed me again on the lips and then released, his head making its way down my body sending warm kissed I could feel through my clothes.

Finally, he made his way to my jeans, which were already damp with desire. His fingers deftly unzipped them. I lifted my hips, practically begging him to slide them off me.

Then a cell phone rang. It had to be his because it wasn’t mine. It rang six times and then turned off, going to voicemail.

Logan continued with my jeans, tugging them off. I gasped as they slipped off of me. I felt a thrill as a pair of pink, wet panties were the only thing now between Logan and me.

Then his phone rang again. Six more times and then voicemail. He ignored it and ripped off my panties, a look of ravenous hunger in his eyes. I arched my back feeling his breath on the wet flesh between my legs.

His phone rang a third time. It sprung me out of the moment. As much as I wanted him, I couldn’t pretend it wasn’t a distraction anymore. “Hey, you gonna get that, Logan?”

“No,” he said. “It’s not an emergency unless it rings four times in a row.”

The phone rang again, and I saw the anguish and rage spread across Logan’s face.

  “Uh-oh,” I said. “That’s four times.”

He got up from the bed and shook his head in rage at his phone, then he looked at me. “You, freeze. I promise I’ll be right back. The thing is, if I don’t answer the fourth one, they’ll come looking for me.”

He found the ringing phone and answered it.

  Chapter Twelve

  Logan

I crossed the room and answered the phone. “Yeah? What is it,” I asked gruffly?

I listened as Marco told me the worst-case scenario between us and the wolves was going down. Right now. An informant inside the city had tipped us off to the wolves’ plan.

They were on their way to the garage to finish me off, angry they had missed their chance on the highway. Fuck.

Why was it that dragon shifters were banned from the city while mangy wolves could just run around in packs terrorizing everyone? Stupid politics.

I had set up shop on the boundary, technically inside the border where we were not allowed to operate; meaning they would be able to shift, and we wouldn’t.

The wolves had finally caught on to that little tidbit. I was worried that would happen, which was why we needed the weapons.

Now we were going to have to do combat with the wolves as humans. It was a huge disadvantage and it wasn’t going to be pretty.

That’s why I needed Bree to stay as far away from the motorcycle shop as possible. This place was perfect, nobody could ever get to her here. Not the wolves, not anybody. I thanked Marco and hung up the phone.

“Bree, I have to go.” I said, turning to face her. I gave her an apologetic look. “I’m really sorry. You’ll be safe here, and I’ll come back as soon as I can. I promise.”

Bree looked alarmed. She grabbed her jeans and her panties and started putting them back on. “Oh no, you don’t. You’re not leaving me trapped up here.”

“It’s the only way you’ll be safe,” I countered. “This is serious.”

“Nope. I’m coming with you.” She said.

“Look, you know how I’m a dragon? Well those bikers who attacked us down there were wolves. Shifters. And they want me and the rest of the dragons dead.”

“I saw you shift or change or whatever,” Bree said. “I’m pretty sure you guys can take them.”

“That’s the problem. Here I can shift. But where the motorcycle shop is, well, we’re not allowed to shift. There’s a magic spell that won’t let us change.”
