And then there was Gage, standing tall and proud at the counter waiting for her. He wore a black suit and purple tie. His dark hair may have been short, but a few tufts at his forehead were already starting to curl. His dark gaze met hers with a deep and lasting promise of love.

“I love you,” she said, unable to resist standing on tiptoe to kiss him.

“Dogs, all mighty. Wait to make it official, hotshot.”

Gage smiled. His expression didn’t try to bamboozle or charm. It was an honest smile, a joyful smile, a smile that said you are my everything. “I love you, too.” He pressed a kiss to her forehead.

In a blink, they were married and Shelby’s life was changed once more.

Together, they returned Grandpa to the hospital. Together, they walked into the dry-cleaning shop that was restoring Mae’s dress. It was ready and they delivered it to the funeral home in Harmony Valley. Together, they visited Nick’s grave. Shelby laid her wedding bouquet at the base of his tombstone.

With Gage’s arms around her, she felt safe and adventurous at the same time. And loved, so very deeply loved.

And according to Mae, that’s the way life was meant to be lived.
