I lost Quinlan in high school, but I never stopped loving her. I never stopped protecting her, either. It didn’t matter where my life took me because in the end, I knew she’d be mine. At least, I did until she shut me out.

Now there’s a threat that could destroy everything I’ve ever wanted, and I will move heaven and earth to eliminate it. Because when I said I’d be there, I meant it, and it’s time she remembered who I am… even if it costs me my only chance at redemption.

  For Liz

I treasure you like a pirate does his booty!

Thanks for always being there for me!

  Four Years Ago…

“HELLO, BEAUTIFUL,” KNOX said, kneeling between my legs.

I giggled. “What are you doing, you psycho?”

He grinned. “I’m simply expressing my appreciation for this incredible pussy. Never seen a prettier one.”

I groaned, attempting to close my legs. “Not sure I like you comparing my pussy to others.”

He chuckled, pushing my knees open again and leaning down to run his tongue over my already wet folds. “That’s my point, there is no comparison.” His mouth covered my clit and he sucked gently.

I arched into him, sliding my fingers into his hair. God, I couldn’t believe I’d had to wait so long for him. I’d loved Knox for as long as I could remember and he was finally here and worshiping my body.

My mother died of cancer when I was thirteen, and Dad had been gone for years… he’d left soon after our other brother, Sebastian, drowned, so it was just my brother Valen and me. He was nineteen and had gained custody of me through the courts (a process that was started when Mom got sick).

Just before I turned fifteen, Valen had an opportunity to work as a mechanic while he finished up training, so he moved us from Amarillo, Texas to Savannah, Georgia. Which is where I met Knox “Badger” McKellar. It was the second day of Sophomore year, and I had fallen in love with him the second I saw him, despite the fact he was a grade lower than me. And I’d stayed in love with him all this time, believing he didn’t feel the same way.

Don’t get me wrong, he’d kissed me once in high school, but it was right before he’d been hauled off in handcuffs.

He’d been released on parole and joined up with my brother’s MC, which gave him the type of support he’d never had before. But I’d been forced to live with my unrequited feelings for longer than I would have thought I could take.

  Until now.

We just had to keep our relationship a under wraps for the moment. Alamo had informed all his ‘brothers’ I was off-limits, but he didn’t take into account my feelings for Knox and exactly how long I’d been waiting.

  “Knox.”

  “Badger,” he corrected.

“No,” I argued as he kissed his way up my body. “You’re too pretty to be an apex predator.”

“I’m the ultimate apex predator, baby, you should know that.” He drew a nipple into his mouth and sucked, while his hand slid between my legs to finger my clit. “So ready for me.”

“I’ve been waiting a long time for you,” I whispered.

“Same, baby. I love you more than the world…”

“More than the universe,” I finished.

He smiled, kissing me gently, then he—

Without warning, I couldn’t breathe. My eyes flew open before I was fully awake, pulling me from my memory, and I felt pressure on my throat.

  “Good morning, sweetheart.”

I clawed at Michael’s arm holding me down, but he wouldn’t budge.

“I’ll let you go if you promise not to scream.”

I nodded frantically, still clawing at him. He released me, and I dragged in gulping breaths as I rubbed my neck. “What do you want?” I rasped. “How did you get in?”

  “I have a key.”

I scrambled onto my knees, my hand still at my throat in a pathetic attempt to protect it. “How the hell did you get a key?”

“Sweetheart, I have access to you on a level you couldn’t even fathom.”

I shivered, squeezing my eyes shut. “Michael, you need to go.”

“I don’t think so.” He rose to his feet. “Get dressed. I’ll meet you downstairs. We’re going to have a little chat.”

After he left, I slid out of bed slowly and rushed around the room looking for my phone. It wasn’t where I left it. Shit! I had no way to call my brother… or Knox. My bedroom was on the second floor and my window was over a cement pad, which meant I had no way out. At least for the moment.

I pulled on clothes and tried to think of an exit plan.

Michael, Knox, and I had gone to the same high school. Michael and I were the same age, and he’d been livid that I’d fallen for Knox, who was a grade below us. Michael had asked me to prom, but I’d declined because
I’d wanted to go with Knox. Michael had been a total dick to me after that, so I did my best to keep my distance.

He and I had met up again in college, and he’d seemed different, but I still had no intention of dating him. Besides, once I’d reconnected with Knox, I’d never given anyone else a second thought. Truth be told, my heart would never belong to anyone other than Knox.

“Quinlan!” Michael bellowed from below. “I’m losing patience.”

I forced back tears and took a deep breath.

  “Quinlan!”

My body shook with fear as I headed toward the stairs. It took me all the courage I had to move, but I stepped down, and then again, until I arrived in the foyer of my tiny townhouse rental.

I squared my shoulders and walked into the kitchen where Michael sat on a barstool at my island… spinning my phone like top. I reached for it, but he snatched it up and tsked. “You and I are going to have a come to Jesus meeting. Then you can have your phone.”

I crossed my arms. “I don’t know what you want from me, Michael.”

“I want you to marry me.”

  “No.”

“It’s not really an option, Quinlan.”

“I’m not going to marry you, Michael.”

“If you give us a chance, this will work beautifully.”

  “Are you insane?” I snapped.

He slammed his palms on the island. “I’m not crazy,” he screamed, and he scared me so much, I jumped.

“I apologize.” He took a deep breath and settled his hands in his lap. “That was ungentlemanly.”

“Please give me my phone,” I whispered.

He shook his head, sliding a manila envelope toward me. “You’re going to forget your biker scum associates and marry me. If you don’t, I will kill young Knox McKellar, and burn your brother’s club to the ground. He and his ‘gang’ will be sent to prison for a very long time. Then where will you be, sweet Quinlan?”

I stared at the envelope, no idea what Michael could possibly have on my brother and Knox. But I highly doubted it was anything they couldn’t deal with, so I squared my shoulders and met Michael’s eyes. “I will not marry you, Michael. Alamo and Knox can take care of themselves.”

He rose to his feet and smoothed his shirt. “We’ll see. I’ll expect your answer in two hours.”

After setting my phone on top of the envelope, Michael left, and I stared at the envelope for a good minute or two.

  I should have called Alamo.

Better yet, I should have called Knox.

  I did neither.

I opened the envelope… and that’s when my world imploded.

  Badger

I’d been riding high all day after my night with Quin. It had been a long fuckin’ time coming and it didn’t disappoint. I loved her with everything I had, and couldn’t wait to make it permanent.

I walked into the kitchen at the compound and grabbed a beer while I dialed her phone number. I planned to pick her up and take her out, but I needed to pick up a couple of mufflers and carburetors for Alamo’s shop before I did.

“The number you are trying to reach is no longer in service.”

I frowned and hung up, checking to see if I’d dialed wrong. Text messages we’d sent back and forth were still on my phone, so I dialed again.

“The number you are trying to reach is no longer in service.”

  “Fuck,” I snapped.

“What’s wrong?” Dash asked as he walked into the room.

  “You seen Alamo?”

  “Yeah. He’s in his office.”

I headed to the back and knocked on the door.

  “Come in,” Alamo called.

“Hey, brother. Did Quin change her number?”

Alamo looked up from his laptop screen and frowned. “I don’t think so. Why?”

“I tried to call her and got the disconnect message.”

“How the fuck do you have her number?” he growled.

“That’s not really important right now,” I said, gritting my teeth. “Wanna check for me?”

Alamo snagged his phone off the desk and dialed. “The number you are trying to reach is no longer in service.”

“What the fuck?” he snapped. “Get Rabbit to find her.”

I nodded and headed to talk to the new recruit. It took Rabbit all of ten minutes to find her, but Quin made it clear that she wanted nothing to do with me. She was fine with Alamo having her new number, but no one was to give it to me. I was shut out and she never wanted to see me again.

I had no choice. I had to let her go.

  Quinlan

  Eighteen months ago…

I stared down at my baby girl, Kinsey, sleeping so peacefully in her crib. My right eye was starting to swell, courtesy of the new bruise I’d received last night, so it was a little tough to see her in the darkness. I laid my hand on her chest and felt it rise and fall with every breath, and I relaxed… sort of. I was doing this for her. At least, that’s what I told myself.

Michael and I had been married for twenty-nine months. Twenty-nine months of hell. He’d refused to besmirch my good name by ‘taking me’ before our wedding night (lucky me), but even then, I’d made the mistake of resisting him. He enjoyed it and it was the first lesson in what would happen to me when I resisted him.

  One of many.

He’d never hit my face before, though. He usually kept his beatings in places I could cover up, but tonight was different. His irritation had turned to anger, and I was in the path of that rage.

Tonight had been my night to play happy wife for some of Michael’s cronies at a hospital fundraiser in downtown Savannah. Michael was an investment banker and several of his clients were bigwigs for the medical center, so every year we were expected to attend, and donate generously. It was an opportunity for Michael to gather more clients, which he reminded me on a regular basis leading up to the event. If I didn’t behave, he didn’t get paid.

He’d spent almost twenty-thousand dollars on a designer gown which fit me like a glove, but it showed far more than I typically liked to show. It had a deep V-neck, which meant I couldn’t wear a bra, and the skirt was virtually see-through, which meant, I had to make sure I avoided anywhere I might be backlit.

More than anything, though, I had to avoid finding myself alone at any time, particularly, because Michael’s ‘friends’ were lecherous and had a difficult time keeping their hands to themselves.

We’d arrived at the dinner in a limo, Michael grinning from ear-to-ear as people fawned over how lucky he was to have such a gorgeous wife. If I’d liked the man, I might have felt flattered, but since I hated him with a passion, the empty words made me nauseated.

I was pleasantly surprised to find Remington Charles was seated at our table, along with her boyfriend, Thomas Ellis, and his grandmother, Opal. Remi was a ballerina, so she was all grace, and tonight she wore a periwinkle blue evening gown that complemented her blonde hair and light complexion, while drawing attention to her gorgeous figure.

“Good to see you, Quinlan,” Thomas said, kissing me on the cheek.

“You too,” I said, then shook Opal’s hand.

Thomas was a good friend of Michael’s, but I’d always found him creepy as hell. The way he looked at me made me feel like he’d seen me naked. Like he was a super villain with x-ray vision or something.

I had no idea what Remington was doing with him, but I would probably never get the chance to ask her, because I wasn’t allowed to have friends, so we would never be that close. I enjoyed visiting with her while I had the chance, though I made it a point to keep my enthusiasm from Michael. He’d do everything in his power to destroy anything that pleased me.

“Quin,” Remington said, pulling me in for a hug. “You look gorgeous.”

“So do you,” I said, sitting beside her.

“Have you been able to see the new exhibit at Jepson?”

The Jepson Center for the Arts had anno
unced they’d be housing artwork from Jason Maxx for the next three months. He’d been the number-one selling country music artist for close to five years, but was branching out into canvas work and quickly becoming a renowned and sought after modern painter.

“I haven’t.” Because Michael refused to let me go anywhere without him and he abhorred the arts. Unless, it was opera. I hated opera, but I could recite La Bohème, or rather, sing it note for note, only very off-key.

“Oh, you must,” Remi insisted. “He’s an absolute genius.”

“We’ll make sure we add that to the calendar,” Michael said.

“Yes,” I agreed, knowing full well he’d never do it.

“I should run to the ladies’,” Remi said.

I gathered my clutch with a smile. “I’ll come with you.”

Michael squeezed my leg under the table, hard enough to leave a bruise, but I didn’t react.

“Do you mind, darling?” I asked.

“Not at all, sweetheart. Powder the hell out of that nose.”

Remington chuckled nervously, then I followed her to the restroom, glad to be escaping my husband even if it was for a minute.

“Are you okay?” she asked once we were out of earshot of Michael.

“Yes, I’m good,” I lied, stepping into a stall before she could ask more. She let the matter drop, but I could tell she didn’t want to.

As I walked out of the bathroom, I found him waiting for me. “Sorry to rush you, sweetheart, but I wanted to introduce you to someone before the announcements began.”

“Oh, of course,” I said, and smiled at Remington who made her way back into the ballroom.

Before I’d even turned back to face Michael, his boney hand wrapped around my arm and dragged me into an alcove. “You little cunt,” he whispered. “What were you doing for so long in that bathroom?”

I tried to pull out of his grip, but he wouldn’t budge and I knew I’d have a bruise there in the morning that would match the one on my thigh. “I was peeing.”
