“Divine, I want nothing but the best for you. I’m willing to say when I’m wrong. I’ve always wanted a man for you that would look at you the way I look at your mother.

“Someone to listen to all those ideas you have, to help you grow them. Someone to understand that sometimes you’re just like your daddy and you will get in your own way.

“I think you have found that and more in Omid. Imma kick his ass he ever talks to me like that again, but this time I deserved it. I was old and stubborn. I missed my baby’s wedding,” he gets choked up. “I should’ve been there for you. I should’ve swallowed my pride way before now.”

“Daddy, you were there in my heart. You all were.”

“Bullshit, little girl. I’ll never get that day back. Just like I missed the birth of my little grandbabies. You did good, Divine. Those two are you all over again. If I haven’t told you how proud of you I am. I want you to know, baby girl, you’ve lived up to all my hopes and dreams and then some,” he says.

“Thank you, Daddy that means a lot.”

“Remember, Divine. I’m always a father first. I’m always going to want to see you happy.”

  “He makes me happy.”

  “I got that.”

He looks over my shoulder and I turn to follow his gaze. Omid has stepped out of the house holding the twins. He comes over to us.

“Your mother said he won’t swing on me if I’m holding the babies,” he teases.

“You have to put them down sometime,” my father replies with a straight face.

  “Daddy.”

He cracks a smile. “I’m joking. Hand over my granddaughter. I haven’t gotten to hold her yet.”

Omid hands him Fairuza and my father’s face lights up. I move into Omid’s side and he wraps an arm around my waist, while I wrap mine around his. He kisses the top of my head.

“Dr. Omid. Do you like basketball? There’s a game coming on and these steaks are almost done,” my father says.

“I try to watch when I can. No offense on the steaks. My father and I‚—”

“Right, right, I’ll remember to go to the Halal butcher next week. You guys coming to the barbeque, right?”

“I’m bringing the rum punch and the potato salad.”

“That’s my girl.” He turns to my daughter and says. “You stick with your mama in the kitchen and learn to make that potato salad.”

My heart swells. This is what my family should be like. Omid gives me a gentle squeeze.

“Come on, son-in-law. Let me get to know you. It looks like we’ll be keeping you around for a while.”

Soon the house is full of my family as they drop in to witness my father welcome Omid in. I couldn’t be happier hours later as I stand in the threshold of the living room and watch my father and husband as they each hold a baby talking and shouting at the TV like old friends.

“Now look at that,” my mother says.

“Yeah, look at that. Everything I ever wanted. Not when I wanted it, but in divine timing.”

  “Always in divine timing.”

  Epilogue

  Fit for a Queen

  Divine

Seven days. He’s throwing me a seven-day wedding. My mind is still blown. The dresses, the venues, the guestlist, the menus. I can’t believe this is my life.

In hindsight, my little fast ass never should’ve been online dating and going to meet some boy in the park. I would whip Fair’s little ass if she tried something like that and I found out about it. My mother nearly strangled me when I told her our story.

The glares I got for about a week straight said it all. If she wasn’t such a fan of Omid’s she probably would’ve throttled me. My mother isn’t the only fan of Omid’s. My father can’t stop talking about his son-in-law the doctor.

“What has you smiling like that?” Marica asks as she walks over to me standing in front of the mirror.

“He kept his promise. This may not be my first time here, but he brought me to Dubai. Do you see all of this?”

“Yeah, I see it.” She beams. “I guess we did get that life we dreamed of when we were sixteen.”

I turn to look at her. I’m so happy for her. Her little boy is so precious. She couldn’t be happier with her family. Although she has aches every now and again, her wrist and leg have healed and she’s walking.

“Although visiting and moving to someplace exotic are two different things,” I note.

“Girl, please. He bought you a house here and in Shiraz. I sort of got an Island as a birthday gift,” she says with a shy smile. “Those have to count for something.”

“Okay, I’ll give you that.” I laugh.

“I’m happy for you. You’re glowing.”

“That might have something to do with being pregnant,” I whisper.

“Maybe this time we can really do this together,” she replies and stares at me, biting her lip.

It’s takes me a second for it to click. When I catch on, I nearly launch myself at her. We embrace and squeal together the way we used to when we were younger.

  “How far?”

  “About nine weeks.”

I do a little happy dance. “This time we’re going to have close due dates.”

“Looks like it,” she says with a beaming smile.

“Look at you.” We turn at the sound of my mother’s voice. “That dress is breathtaking.”

I turn back to the mirror once more. “It is stunning,” I reply as I smooth my hands down the blue and gold fabric. It’s just the first dress of many but I love it just the same.

“You look like a princess,” my mother says.

  “She is,” Sassa chimes in.

I laugh. I feel like a princess. When Omid said he wanted to do this for our anniversary, I didn’t know he wanted to do it this big. I should’ve known better.

“Omid is going to be speechless when he sees you.”

“Have you seen him? How are the twins? Are they driving him crazy?”

“He looks like a proud baba. They’re both fine. They adore him.”

“I guess that means the only thing missing is me.”

I sit in the shadow, resting on the window sill. He doesn’t see us. His jealousy and anger are too blinding for that. It’s good that we’re finally paying him this visit. It’s much overdue if you ask me.

“He’s here in Dubai. Why can’t you make this happen?” He snarls into the phone. “I don’t care about Remi or Ramses. Fuck the Alliance. I want him and his family dead.”

He listens to the other end of the phone, nostrils flaring as he’s denied his way. He’s like a petulant child. I curl my lip back over my teeth.

He’s a piece of shit. Selfish, self-centered, arrogant asshole. All the flash and none of the class to go with it.

“No, this cannot wait any longer. I know he knows what I’ve done. It’s me or him. I’m not going to wait another day for him to come for me… Yes, I know I’m talking about a doctor. You don’t know my brother. It’s all an act. He’s as bad as the twins. Do this and I will double the price.”

The desperation in his voice seeps through into the air. I can taste his fear. I grin. Omid was right. This fat fuck has lost it.

  “Hello? Hello?” he hollers frantically.

It’s clear they’ve had enough of listening to him. Wise choice. I would’ve hated to have to miss the wedding to pay another visit today.

I flip my pocket watch open. The difference in my brother’s style and mine. I like to offer an ambiance for the silence I’m here to bring.

Uri and Val slaughter. Sim and I, we create a short and sweet ending. Now you hear it, then you don’t.

“What the hell?” This fat bastard snarls when he hears the sound of Für Elise fill the room from my watch.

I stare at him with a smile on my lips. Like a dance that’s timeless, Sim moves in, placing her silencer to his temple. I lift my own gun and together we make him hush. It’s swift,
neat, and quick. Two to the head. Our way.

I close the watch and stand. The song has ended and time is up. My wedding gift to the groom has been completed. I hold my hand out for Sim’s like I’ve done a hundred times before.

“We have a wedding to get to,” I say.

“You have to make the call.”

“Yes, I haven’t forgotten. Just relishing in the moment a bit.”

She grins. “I’ve been wanting to complete this one for some time. You never go against family.”

I turn to her and smile. Those are words we live by. They’re the words that have saved us to this day.

  Never.

I pull my phone from my pocket and make the call with a peace many won’t ever understand. I’m a man that lives happily in the shadows. It’s the men who’s shadows I enter that should distress. My brother picks up the phone on the second ring. I say all that needs to be said.

  “Done.”

  Omid

I hold my son and daughter in my arms waiting for the call before we’ll start the celebration. I have no regrets. When you see a problem it’s best to handle it before it handles you. Paiman is lucky he was granted the time he was.

Remi and Ramses had no intention of sparing him a single day. I, on the other hand, wanted to wait. I wanted Paiman to wait and wonder when it would happen. I wanted him to look around every corner stressing about whether or not he was safe.

I wanted him close to insanity when death finally came for him. He came for my sanity when he targeted my wife so I’ve returned the favor. What kind of big brother would I be if I didn’t.

Uri walks over and kisses the top of Fair’s head and pinches Fir’s cheek. “Un Ur,” they sing their version of his name as they bounce in my arms.

He looks me in the eyes. “It’s done. Let’s get this wedding started.”

  I nod.

“My son, let’s get this celebration started. What are we waiting for?” Baba calls from across the room.

  “Nothing. Absolutely nothing.”

  Divine

Fireworks fill the sky. Gold desserts are being served and laughter surrounds us. This has only been the first day and I’m still in awe of it all.

I look up into my husband’s eyes as we dance beneath the stars.

“This,” I say to him with a beaming smile.

“This.” His eyes sparkle as he looks back at me. “We’ll always have this. I love you, Princess Divine Vahid.”

“Not as much as I love you, my Prince.”

“Weren’t you calling me Dr. Feel Good last night?”

I throw my head back and burst with laughter. I love this man. He has been everything I need, whenever I need it, even when I didn’t know I needed it.

  My life is truly divine.
