Aiden swallowed. "But then I didn't show."
Liam gave him a soft smile. "You didn't, but I was pretty determined to go to that party with you."
Aiden squeezed Liam's hands. "Best surprise date ever."
Liam nodded. "And this has been the best year ever. Getting to know you more, spending time together, just being with you… You make me so happy, Aiden."
Aiden had trouble speaking over the lump in his throat. "I feel the same way, every single day. I'm so lucky to have you in my life."
Aiden's heartrate skyrocketed when Liam let go of his hands, pulled a small box from his pocket, and went down on one knee in front of him.
"Aiden. You are smart and funny and sweet and adorable, and I never want to buy a Christmas tree without you ever again. Will you marry me?"
Aiden was sure there was ring in the box Liam had opened, but he couldn't make it out through his blurry vision.
"I love you too." He pulled Liam up and couldn't stop nodding. "Yes. Yes, I will marry you."
Liam's smile shone brighter than any light in the universe.
Aiden rushed forward, desperate to get Liam into his arms, and he felt his foot slip on some fallen pine needles. His body careened toward the pavement. Instead of his life flashing before his eyes, Aiden couldn’t help but think Chelsea is never going to let me live this down.
Just as he imagined explaining his second annual holiday décor-related injury to Meriwether, Aiden softly hit the ground at the same time strong arms wrapped around him. His foot bumped the trunk of one of the trees, creating a cascade of Douglass firs falling around them.
Liam was on top of him, eyes full of concern. “Aiden, are you okay?”
Aiden squeezed his eyes closed. “If my choice is to die here right now or live with you reminding me about my inability to survive Christmas tree attacks, I choose death.”
Liam chuckled. “I’ll admit, when I said I wanted to be with you for the rest of our lives, I was hoping it would be longer than two minutes.”
Aiden’s eyes flew open, and he wrapped his arms around Liam's neck, hugging him tightly. "Oh my god. I can't… You… Liam. I can't even talk!"
Liam squeezed him. "You don't have to. You said yes, and that's all I needed to hear."
Aiden pulled back and looked into Liam's eyes. "I just love you. I'm so glad none of those dates worked out."
Liam stood carefully and pulled Aiden to his feet. "God, me too. I have to admit, Drew was the one who worried me.”
Aiden stepped close, lifted his chin, and softly pressed his lips against Liam's. “Yeah, I get that. He’s so sweet, and those eyes… He’s kind of the whole package,” Aiden teased. “When I saw him outside the bar tonight, I thought about going home with him.”
Liam’s little growl turned into a laugh, and he tightened his hold on Aiden. “Nope, you’re mine now. You just promised.”
"I can't believe you proposed in a Christmas tree lot."
"I think it'll be part of my holiday tradition every year now. Reminding you that I love you, right here, every December twenty-third."
Aiden smiled. "Part of our holiday tradition." He ran a thumb over the scruff on Liam's jaw. "We should probably grab one of these trees so you can take me to bed."
"Oh yeah?"
Aiden nodded. "Let me make it up to you for missing our first date."
Liam chuckled. "I'm not going to argue with that."
Liam's lips met Aiden's, and as their kiss intensified, all Aiden could think was he'd finally found his perfect match… and it had only taken twelve dates to do it.
