“Hold on to something!” Lilly yelled as she attempted to level out the plane before impact with the ground.
Within moments, the ship crashed through the dense upper canopy of the Tinguá Biological Reserve north of Rio de Janeiro. As it broke through sinewy vines stretching between Murumuru palms and other large trees, pieces of the plane severed off, leaving a trail of debris 250 meters into the undergrowth. Fire engulfed the rear of the small plane as it finally came to rest in a small clearing.
A loud explosion brought Shift to consciousness. He had no idea how long they’d been on the ground, but he could hear fire crackling nearby and smoke filled the cabin. Lilly sat next to him, still buckled into the pilot seat. A thick branch had smashed through the front window and impaled her chest. Blood pooled on her lap and ran down her legs and onto the floor of the plane. She wasn’t breathing. Shift knew he had to help the others—unless it was already too late.
I wrote Tomorrow We Rise because I wanted to see what might become of people after a crisis ends. I’ve read too many books that end just as Book 1 (Today We Die) ends. The vaccine is created. Life will continue. Hurray! But then what? Few books go on to explain the “then what” of a tragedy.
So, I wrote it.
Tomorrow We Rise may not be the final chapter in mankind’s struggle for survival, but it gave me an opportunity to explore what life might be like when the population of the world shrinks to near zero. The third and final book of The Killing Sands series—A New World—will attempt to bring the story full circle. I hope you’ll read it too. I don’t want to leave anyone hanging.
As with Today We Die, in writing Tomorrow We Rise I utilized the skills of many people. My dad, Steve Wilde spent many hours helping me edit and polish Tomorrow We Rise, at the same time as writing his own book. Of course, he’s retired, so he has a bit of time on his hands. :-)
Ron Beach, Jamie Richens Kirkham, Susan Niedert and Jacob Cooper again provided valuable reviews, edits, financial support, emotional support, and occasional kicks in the butt when I messed up.
Finally, my wife (Chandi) and my daughter (Sage) accompanied me to the Bahamas where I took the photograph for the cover of Tomorrow We Rise. They suffered through a terribly sunny and peaceful trip. It was quite the sacrifice.
I’m sure nobody really wants to read about me again—I’m not that interesting. But just in case I’m wrong, or you didn’t find the time to read about me after reading Today We Die, please read on.
I grew up in Taylorsville, a suburb of Salt Lake City, Utah. My teenage years were spent skiing, golfing, mountain biking, hiking, camping and dating. After high school, I spent two years in Scotland on a service mission. During college, I met and married Chandi, and we started a family.
I graduated from the University of Utah with a bachelor’s degree in mass communications in 2003—Go Utes! Since my only job prospects with a degree in mass communications included writing obituaries and teaching mass communications to others, I went to law school in San Diego, California. Boogie boarding became my favorite pastime. I graduated from law school in 2007 and was offered a very nice job at a small firm in St. George, Utah, in the southwest corner of the state. Now, I practice law in both California and Utah.
My family and I have lived in St. George for 10 years now. It’s hot and incredibly scenic here and my life couldn’t be better. I’m a husband and a father of six. My wife and kids are amazing and keep me busy and young-ish. My wife is still as beautiful as she was the day I met her—18 years ago. I’m a lawyer, a pianist, a percussionist, a Sunday School teacher, a soccer dad, an armchair quarterback, an outdoor enthusiast, and now, an “author”. In the very little free time I have, I camp, cliff-jump, kayak, golf, do yardwork, and hike with my family. On the rare occasion I have free time after all of that, I write.
