On one hand, that pissed Dalton off something fierce. On the other, he knew his boss—his friend—was trying to look out for him. “I get where you’re coming from. I’ll be careful.”
“Good.” He paused. “So, we don’t have to discuss that your cover is blown.”
He cringed. “And then some. Did you get Methan?”
“He’s in custody,” the other man affirmed. “But he’s not talking. Unlike the others, he had no cyanide capsule hidden in his teeth, which is interesting.”
“Yeah. Tells me that maybe he’s planning on escape.”
“Could be. You can bet, he’ll be watched like a hawk, and so will the remaining members of the group.”
“How’s President Warren? She got away, right?”
“She’s fine. Her people got wind something wasn’t right and she was diverted in time.”
“Thank God.”
“Yeah.” Noah nodded. “There was a lot going on that night. Turns out there was an undercover op involving an arms dealer taking place during the ball, and the agents and the dealer had to get people to safety.”
“No shit?”
“It gets better. Some off-duty agents brought in rescue via helicopters on the roof, and some party attendees with military backgrounds saved a lot of lives in the ballroom with the assistance of some agents there.”
“Did they get most of the Red Mantle guys?”
“Most. Some of them escaped, though, and their numbers are much greater than those who attacked the ball, as we know.”
“Damn.”
Noah paused. “Find out anything I should know while you were undercover?”
“Oh, shit,” he whispered, blinking at the ceiling. “You have no fucking clue what I found out, if it’s the truth.”
“Lay it on me.”
“Pohl, one of Methan’s right-hand men, claimed that the Red Mantle has members high up in the government. Like, really high up.”
Noah paused. “You gonna make me guess?”
“What’s the worst-case scenario?”
Noah fell silent and Dalton could see the other man working on the puzzle. And he saw the instant his boss worked it out. His voice was a near whisper, even though the door was closed. “The vice president?”
“Yeah. That shit sucks, right? I don’t know how we’ll ever prove that.”
Noah wiped a hand down his face. “Okay. That one is way above our pay grade. There’s going to be so much shit involved, we’re all going to end up stinking. I’ll make a call or two. There are a couple of guys I know I can trust with this, and one is our director. It’s out of our hands.”
“Thought it might be.”
“What’s going to happen?”
“They’ll tap him, gather evidence. Anyone in the government he’s in collusion with involving the Red Mantle will go down as well.”
“Jesus. This will be a bigger scandal than Watergate.”
“Count on it. I’m just hoping your name and mine stays out of the whole thing,” Noah said.
“How likely is that?”
“Not very, considering. But one can dream.”
Dalton had to laugh, and winced. “Can’t wait to get back to easy shit like serial killers. Remind me to never get involved with the government craphole again.”
“From your lips.” Noah stood, clasped Dalton’s arm. “Get some rest so you can get your ass back to Dallas. In the meantime, I think there’s someone waiting to see you whose face is a lot more welcome around here than mine.”
“Ya think?”
“Tell you a secret—she took a few days off work to stay here and sit with you,” Noah revealed with a wink. “Don’t fuck this up.”
Dalton’s heart lightened. “I’ll try.”
Noah took his leave. Jolie didn’t return right away, and his eyes grew heavy. He was dozing when he heard the door whoosh open again. Opening his eyes, he saw a pretty, chestnut-haired angel dressed in stressed blue-jean capris and a blue top with some sparkly shit at the top. He hadn’t noticed her outfit before, but now that his brain was functioning again, he couldn’t help but lick his lips.
“I missed you,” he said, unable to keep the plaintive note from his voice.
“That sounds promising, my hero agent.” Taking a seat, she smiled at him.
“When I’m out of here…” He let the statement hang, arching a brow.
“When you’re out of here, wild horses couldn’t keep me away.”
That was enough for now. A beginning.
Dalton would grab his chance with both hands.
And hang on for the ride.
