  Chapter One

Bel carried a platter of cookies and milk into the living room. He set the tray on the coffee table and then crossed his arms over his broad chest. He silently admired the way Eden moved as he strung tinsel over a fresh-cut tree with tiny blinking lights. Despite Eden's flowing, white poet's shirt and loose-fitting blue jeans, Bel pictured his sinewy muscles flexing like a snake dancing in a mesmerizing sway. Long hair, the blue of a cop's uniform, hung down to his waist. The color matched the tint of Eden's wings, currently hidden in gill-like sheaths along his shoulder blades. Humming a Christmas tune, Eden tugged a clump of tinsel apart and tossed several strands onto higher branches.

"I have to admit it," Bel said. "Your holiday cheer is starting to get to me."

Eden turned and flung tinsel over Bel and then bounced up on his toes to kiss the man's lips. "I love the holidays. Every one. Christmas, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving." He lowered his eyes and smiled shyly. "I'm especially looking forward to Valentine's Day."

Bel wrapped his arms around Eden and, when he pulled him close, Eden nuzzled his neck. "I thought Christmas would be your favorite," Bel said.

Eden reached up and ran his slender fingers through Bel's thick, dark curls. "I love you, and Valentine's Day is the holiday for lovers."

Bel's violet eyes swirled with hints of black and a low growl slipped from his throat. Eden, unflustered by those minor demonic habits, continued to exploit Bel's love of being touched. He traced Bel's square jaw with one fingertip until Bel turned his face into the touch, sucking the finger between his lips. Eden kissed his stubbled cheeks, playfully avoiding Bel's mouth while his pale hands roamed Bel's hard, muscular body.

"You're never going to finish decorating if you keep that up." Bel tightened his hold on the angel as Eden tried to pull away. "I'm okay with that," he added.

Eden gave him one more kiss, its chasteness refuting Bel, but the playful smile that followed reminded him he'd have Eden naked by the end of the night. The angel had a surprisingly high sex drive. "What are you smirking at?" Eden asked. The way he diverted his gaze back to the tree, Bel suspected Eden knew exactly what he'd been thinking.

Bel tightened his embrace and said, "I want you to open a present." He enjoyed the feel of his body wrapped around Eden's seemingly delicate form. His lover was anything but fragile, no matter how much he looked like a fine china doll.

Eden gave him a playful shove and an incredulous look. "You can't wait until tomorrow?"

"I can, but I want to give you your gift now." Bel took Eden's hand and dropped down to his knees in front of the tree. Once Eden joined him on the floor, they exchanged gifts wrapped in shiny and colorful paper with bright ribbons and machine-made bows.

"Open it," Eden said. His gift, wrapped in blue metallic paper with a bow that had long streamers curling down one side, rested in Bel's lap. "You first, since you're so impatient."

Bel couldn't help but smile. It had taken time to draw the angel out of his shell, so every tease and flirtation was precious to him. He tore away the paper and with a loud "Yes!" he flipped the box over in his hands, his fingers drawing out into claws and digging into the cardboard. "You said no, but I had hoped you didn't mean it." Bel glanced up from the PlayStation box with a wicked fanged grin. Excitement tended to shake his willpower when it came to resisting the shift to demon form, but Eden understood, so for once he didn't fight it quite as hard as he'd like to. "I believed you," Bel said. "Which makes this so much cooler. I thought your kind couldn't lie."

With a blush, Eden lowered his head but raised his eyes to meet Bel's. The half-demon's fangs had retracted and his fingers returned to normal humanoid shape. "I didn't lie," Eden said, "I merely avoided the truth so that I could surprise you."

"Open mine, my light." Bel's eyes momentarily glowed with the purple-black whorls of shadowfire before settling to his usual shade of violet.

Eden nodded, his long, blue hair falling over his face as he turned a small box between his fingers. It fit in the palm of his hand and sported a bright red ribbon wrapped around a miniature candy cane. The tag read, "For my guiding light." Eden had little internal light since his
Fall, but to the demon half-breed, Eden was a beacon in a world overrun with outcast demons and humans seeking their sick kind of life. Even Fallen, the angel was stronger than most Bel had met in his time on Earth's surface.

As Eden carefully peeled shiny white paper from the tiny box, Bel inched closer, leaning against Eden's shoulder, his gaze fixed on the package in the angel's hands. "Open it," he whispered fervently.

"I am." Eden smiled at his lover's glee.

As the paper fell away from a leather-bound box with miniscule gold hinges, Bel sat up and snatched the box from Eden's fingers. He opened it, and then turned it so Eden could see. Even Bel's excitement didn't shine in his eyes as much as the slivers of brightly colored gems decorating a wide gold band displayed on a bed of the softest scrap of cloth he could find.

Eden's mouth fell open. He worked his lips, but couldn't form the words.

"I love you, Eden. We may not be able to do the human thing and get married, but I want you to wear my ring as the love of my life."

"Bel… That's…" Eden gulped and licked his lips. "It is beautiful."

"Marry me, my guiding light." Bel took the ring from the box and lifted Eden's hand, sliding the cold metal around the angel's finger. A perfect fit.

  "We can't."

"I know, but it only matters to us. We'll know what it means even if the humans in this area don't understand two men in love."

Eden stared at the ring. The gems glowed with a life of their own —not life, magic— in shades of red, blue, and green, twinkling like the lights on the tree beside them. "I mean, we can't. I can't accept this, Bel. I just… I'm sorry, I can't." He tugged the ring off and shoved it back in Bel's hand. When he met Eden's eyes, the pain sank into Bel's heart like a heated dagger. He didn't expect the angel to understand Hell's customs, but clearly, Eden thought Bel meant the ring as its original purpose and not—

  "Eden, wait. Let me explain."

Eden stumbled to his feet. Fat tears watered his eyes. He stumbled out of the room and out of the house before Bel could clarify his intentions.

  Chapter Two

Three days later, when Eden returned home, his head hanging low, Bel had already taken down the tree and the lights. He couldn't stand the decorations alone.

"I'm sorry," Bel said when Eden arrived at their door. The angel looked as if he'd been sleeping in the streets, dirty hair tangled around his thin face and his wings drooping at his sides, blue-tinted feathers twisted and loose and dusty.

"It is I who should be sorry. I reacted poorly and I—"

"No." Bel raised a hand, silencing Eden. "It is done. Forget it happened. Will you stay, my guiding light? Please tell me you have not returned only to gather your belongings."

  "I love you, Bel."

"That's all I need to know." Bel threw his arms around the troubled angel and pulled him into the house. He clung to him as if Eden had answered that he'd leave. "I love you. I thought I'd lost you. I am happy with what we have together, Eden. It's good enough for me if it's good enough for you."

  * * * *

Bel avoided talking about it for five days and suspected Eden had finally given up on the matter. Bel didn't want the angel to feel obligated to explain his reaction because the demon doubted he could handle reliving the rejection. A part of him knew he should tell Eden that the ring hadn't been meant as a demonic binding of souls, but instead a profession of his love for the angel, but the other part of Bel knew Eden's quick mind and refused to believe his lover didn't know exactly what Bel intended by creating that magical gift.

Too soon, he'd decided while Eden had been gone. He'd known Eden for a quick eight months, and several of those had been relearning what they'd both been taught about angels and demons. They were still learning, but the trust —or so Bel thought— was there.

Eden pulled their calendar off of the kitchen wall. As he did, he covered a hand-drawn picture of a smiling Christmas tree on the square labeled "25". Bel took it from Eden's hands and set it beside the new calendar on the counter. He pulled the angel into his arms. "Believe me," he whispered, nuzzling Eden's ear. "I'm not mad."

  "I know."

Bel drew back to look at Eden's face. "You're not happy."

"I know you're not angry with me." Eden shrugged the demon away and tossed the previous year's calendar in the trash. He opened the new one, holding it between them like a shield. On New Year's Day he had drawn a big smiling face. When he flipped the page, his hand-drawn heart with their names in it mocked Bel from the Valentine's Day square.

"You're my guiding light," Bel said. "I love you. There is no need to feel guilty for wanting to protect yourself. I get that."

"It's not guilt," Eden said mostly to himself. He let January fall down, covering the happy Valentine's Day drawing. "I want to make it up to you, but I'm not quite sure how."

  "You don't need to."

"I know you don't need me to, but I do. I need to."

The sorrow in Eden's eyes hurt Bel more than his rejection of the ring. He folded his arms around Eden, resting his head on the angel's shoulder and rubbing Eden's back. "You'll think of something. You're the smartest angel I know."

"I'm the only angel you know."

Bel heard the smile in Eden's voice and laughed softly. "So righteous and indignant," he teased. "I'll show you how much I know about you, little angel." He lifted his head and grinned as his fingers found their way under Eden's shirt and up to his wing sheaths. His touch danced lightly along their sensitive edges, sending sensual shudders down Eden's body.

Their mouths drifted together in lazy, tender kisses. When Bel's caresses drew a gasp from the angel, the demon pushed his tongue past those parted lips. Eden sucked on his tongue and dug his fingers in Bel's hair. When the teasing touch became too much, Eden tangled his fingers in Bel's hair and tugged him back so he could suck in a whimpering breath.

"Oh, Bel, when you do that…"

Bel stepped into the angel, pressing their bodies together. Against Eden's ear, he whispered, "I know." Bel circled his hips, rubbing his cock against Eden's. The angel's wings were sensitive, but he'd still come like any other man with enough friction against his hard cock. Bel growled and nipped at Eden's earlobe.

Eden sucked in a deep breath. His chest pumped it right back out again. Breathing through his mouth, his kisses went from tender to demanding, from chaste to messy and needy. He arched into Bel's touch and bucked his hips against his lover's, seeking that sweet release in wordless physical urges.

  "Are you… are you… Bel?"

"Yes, my light?" Bel's voice rumbled.

Eden's hands skated down Bel's chest, squeezing between them to tug his shirt out of his waistband. "You like to make me beg, don't you?"

Bel answered by pushing the angel against the wall and pinning him there with his hips. "Beg. Demand. Suggest."

"I suggest," Eden said, fumbling with the buttons on Bel's shirt. "That you get rid of these clothes."

With a chuckle, Bel grabbed Eden's hands and then swooped in for a kiss, tangling their tongues in an intimate dance until Eden broke away to pant out several quick breaths. Bel hummed his satisfaction, lust swirling the shadowfire in his eyes and drawing out his fangs despite his best efforts at controlling the demon inside. He stepped back, unbuttoning his pants and flicking down his zipper as he toed off his shoes.

  "You too," Bel said.

As if those words broke a spell, Eden tore off his shirt and then, after a quick kiss to Bel's cheek, darted up the back stairs. Bel caught him as he rounded through the doorway to their bedroom, and tackled him to the unmade queen-sized bed. Eden rolled over and hooked his arms around Bel's neck. "Make love to me, Bel," Eden whispered. "Drive me wild."

Bel rose. He tugged Eden's pants off and then leaned over him to conquer his mouth. He hooked one arm under Eden's waist and dragged him into the middle of the bed, before setting his weight over his lover. When Eden's legs wrapped around Bel, Bel caressed the thigh at his waist and then tuc
ked his hand under Eden's ass, squeezing and massaging before his fingers inched down his crease.

"Yes…" Eden hissed the word out.

"Yes, what?" Bel asked. He grabbed a pillow and Eden automatically rolled over and tucked it under his hips.

  "Yes, everything."

  "That works for me."

Bel nipped Eden's ass and then ran his tongue over his entrance. Eden squirmed, but Bel held him still. He covered Eden's body with his own, his hips pressed to Eden's ass and his cock nestled against the place he most wanted to be. Looping his arms around Eden's waist, Bel flexed with gentle pressure to ease Eden open. As Eden took him in, Bel exhaled a ragged sigh.

"Oh, yeah, that's warm and tight and…" Bel forgot his words and started to thrust. Eden moaned and lifted his hips to meet Bel's strokes as his fingers dug into the sheets. Bel scooped bright hair away from Eden's face and kissed his neck, his cheek, and his lips as Eden twisted his head to meet his mouth in an awkward, sloppy kiss.

  "Soon," Eden said.

"I know." Bel pushed back, rising on his knees so he could hold Eden's hips, thrusting harder and faster, so close to his own release.

"That thing." Eden panted. "My wings."

"I know. Shhh, just enjoy it." Bel squeezed Eden's ass with one hand. As Eden rocked back into his thrusts, Bel ran that hand up his spine, sliding sideways at his shoulder blade to brush a light but hurried touch over the angel's wing sheath.

Eden's voice echoed in Bel's ears as the angel came with a keening cry, pushing back against Bel and tearing at the sheets with his long, pale fingers. Bel held back until he wrung every last moan out of the angel and then he slammed into him one more time, releasing his seed and bucking his hips once, twice, and then again as streams of warm cum filled his lover.
