THE CRUEL SEVEN

  “Oh, I see.”

There were two gurneys in the center of the mortuary, and on each gurney there was an occupied body bag. Bryant nodded to a man in a cream medical coat, who then pulled open the zipper on the first.

Lisa stepped forward, drew a breath, and nodded. Then the man pulled back the second zipper and she did the same.

She turned to Bryant. “I would have killed them myself if I could have, but seeing them laid there doesn’t make me happy. They were evil. But they were young, and they were brainwashed.”

Lisa returned to Mike, relieved that there would be no more innocent victims created by the McCrawley family.

Lisa asked if she could make a phone call, then remained at Mike’s bedside while the nurse brought her a phone and plugged it in to a wall outlet close by. “Just press the green button for an outside line.”

Lisa thanked her and dialed a number. Then smiled at her husband. “I have some good news.”

Mike raised an eyebrow. “Last time you gave me good news I ended up plunging off the top of a mountain.”

Lisa nodded. “This time it really is good news.”

  He narrowed his eyes. “Okay.”

“It’s over, Mike. The McCrawleys are dead. All seven of them. So our nightmare is finally over, and I’m going home with you.” She took a breath and smiled. “On one condition.”

  “What’s that?”

“You let me choose our next vacation.”

Mike laughed, then nodded. “Who are you calling?”

“My Mom. I just need to hear her voice.”

When her mother answered the phone, Lisa fought to hold back the tears. “Mom, it’s me.”

“Hello, Darling. We’ve been thinking about you. Did you have a nice time?”

  About the Author

Terence Mitford is a retired police sergeant with 30 years’ service, and for a time he was in charge of a department dealing with serious sexual offenses, domestic violence, and child abuse. It was a period in his career that heightened his awareness of what happens in the shadows of society, behind closed doors, and away from public scrutiny, and it was a period when he encountered the darkest side of human nature.

For many years, he was a dedicated martial arts practitioner and then a police self defense instructor which, in addition to the countless situations he encountered, helps when writing the adrenalin filled action scenes.

He began his writing career with a The Mason Cooper Trilogy and although he has more books planned for the series, he also has many standalone thrillers planned. So there are many more books to come from this author.

Despite his police career he has no plans to write police procedurals. “There are plenty of authors already doing a fine job in that genre.”

He plans to write more psychological, suspense thrillers, more Mason Cooper books, and a new series with a tough female protagonist.
