Stone Cold Magic (Ella Grey Series Book 1)

by Jayne Faith

I tried to call his name, but the minor demon whose eyes the reaper and I were borrowing could only let out a faint squeal.

Then, it was as if a rubber band snapped against my brain, and the scene vanished.

My heart hammered. “No, wait, go back,” I rasped. “I need to know where.”

But all I saw was my own living room. Loki was peering up at me, his pupils flickering dark red. A growl rumbled low in his throat.

“I need to know where he is,” I repeated.

But the grave chill in my core receded. I half expected the reaper to pound against the inside of my skull, demanding that I take it to the ghost house. But instead, its anticipation bled through me like a black tide. I choked, feeling as if I were drowning. For a split second, the reaper’s eagerness for the ghost house completely filled me and became my own. It was fast, but in that blink there was no Ella—I was a shell, a mere container for the reaper’s desire.

My breath ragged, I gave my head a hard shake. Standing, I went to the bathroom and flipped the light on, suddenly filled with the need to see my own face in the mirror, to be able to look at myself and know that I was still myself.

I watched my reflection, staring into my own haunted eyes until my breathing returned to normal.

I called up the images from the vision, every detail of the compound in the middle of nowhere. I had a bit of information—the place where Evan was being held. I had something to look for, something concrete to seek out. Now I just had to survive the reaper long enough to find it.
