“Then you can get a job teaching English.” Her frown returned. “Sagan, this isn’t about us. It’s about our child.”

  “And after the baby arrives?”

“We’ll figure it out. For now, we have to make sure nothing happens to you in the meantime. I can’t bear the thought of living without you.”

She smiled wanly. “This is going to be a lot for my parents to take in all at once. We’re engaged, you’re a vampire, I’m pregnant, Dad has to quit his job, they have to move…”

“I should go with you to explain,” I offered.

“Maybe,” she said. “How long do we have?”

“You and I need to leave tonight, just after sunset. Your parents should be gone in a week, and they should tell their friends they’ve decided to buy an RV and travel around for a while.”

Sagan closed her eyes and sighed. “And you’re sure this is necessary?”

“Absolutely. Magnus will stop at nothing to find us.”

“In that case, yeah, you should come with me. I’ll need your help explaining all this shit.”

A knock on the door startled both of us. Caleb peeked in. “You’re awake.”

He saw the solemn look on both of our faces.

“We have to leave town tonight,” I said.

His brow furrowed and he looked from one of us to the other. “What the hell’s going on?”

“The guy I killed was sent by Tiras Asinis.”

Caleb’s confusion was evident, then I could practically see a light bulb appear above his head. He turned to Sagan and asked with amazement, “You’re pregnant?”

  She nodded.

“We can’t stay,” I said. “They’ll send someone else the minute they learn that Adrian failed his task. Maybe several of them. We need to get out of Diablo Falls as soon as the sun sets.”

“Yeah, I get it.” Caleb rubbed his chin. “This is probably not the time, but congratulations to the two of you. Now what can I do to help you?”

I stood behind Sagan’s chair and placed my hands on her shoulders. “It would be a huge help if you know a document forger I can trust, somewhere between here and Los Angeles. Sagan will need a fake passport.”

She tilted her head back and looked up and me. I shrugged. “I’ve already got several of my own.”

Caleb grinned. “I know a guy who knows a guy. I’ll put you in touch right away.”

“Also, I need to rent your truck for a week.”

“Don’t be silly,” he said. “I wouldn’t charge you for that.”

“I’ll make sure you get it back.” Along with a nice payment for his trouble, though I didn’t mention that.

Sagan suddenly burst into tears. Through her sobs, she asked Caleb, “Will you take care of Marcie for me? She’ll be a mess when I tell her.”

“I promise I’ll comfort her,” he said.

“She really likes you,” Sagan sobbed.

“I know.” Caleb gave a bashful smile. “She spent last night at my place.”

  “Hasta mañana, estudiantes.”

“Hasta mañana, Señora Jones,” came the echo from nineteen sixth-graders.

As much as I loved teaching, I was beyond ready to drag my tired, pregnant ass home and get off my aching feet. I had been feeling big as a whale, but Terrance claimed I was more beautiful than ever. I would have been tempted to call bullshit on that one, but the man was relentless in his desire to have sex with me every day.

Not that I complained, mind you.

We loved our big house just outside the downtown area of Ala del Ángel. We were a five-minute walk from the shops and only ten minutes from the playa. From the patio outside our bedroom we could see the Gulf of Nicoya. Costa Rica was an astoundingly beautiful country and the people there were a joy. As “Robert and Christie Jones,” we’d already formed a circle of friends—all human, as far as we knew.

If we had to be in hiding somewhere, Costa Rica was a pretty rockin’ choice.

My parents were happy in their sizable home in suburban Houston. Dad got a country club membership and spent his days golfing with some of his old buddies, and Mom was already up to her neck in charity work, just like she had been in Diablo Falls.

Of course, I could never have gotten either of them to admit they were happy to be there. We had an ugly scene the day Terrance whisked me out of Diablo Falls. I asked Mom to cook dinner for us, and he and I went there directly from the hospital as soon as the sun went down. Over the course of three hours, we gradually broke the confusing news to them. Naturally, the engagement was the best-received item, and they quickly adapted to the idea that they had a grandchild on the way.

The vampire thing was a much harder pill to swallow. The fact that their only child was leaving town immediately for a foreign county and they wouldn’t see her for months made both of them furious, but when Terrance patiently explained that my life and the baby’s were in grave danger, they understood it was for the best.

Then there was the idea that they would be risking my life if they didn’t leave Diablo Falls within a week. That should have been the straw that broke the camel’s back, but Terrance mitigated the damage. He calmly said, “I’ll put you up in the Four Seasons while you work with a real estate agent to find a home to stay in. No price limit whatsoever. Furnish it as you see fit—also no limit. I realize what a tremendous imposition this is and want the two of you to be as comfortable as possible during your time away from Diablo Falls.”

I’d never known my dad to be influenced much by money, but their easy life in Houston soon made up for him having to abandon the job he’d held for seventeen years.

Both he and Mom were thrilled with their “extended vacation,” even if they wouldn’t say so.

Marcie and Caleb had come to visit once, about a month ago. They used the same guy for their fake passports, so that there would be no record of the two of them having visited Costa Rica. We spent a ridiculously fun week together, and I was jealous of everyone being able to drink except me. I missed Marcie so damn much and couldn’t wait until this nightmare was over so we could see each other as often as we wanted again.

When I reached the bottom of the school stairs, Terrance was there waiting, leaning against the blue wall like he was every afternoon. My man never let me out of his sight, but I had to admit I kind of liked the constant doting.

I gave him a big grin as I approached. “Can we get some ice cream? I’m having a craving.”

He laughed. “Baby, you don’t know the meaning of the word yet. Just wait till I’m finally able to turn you. Then you’ll know what a real craving is.”

I stopped on the sidewalk and looked up at his ruggedly handsome face. The scar was gone, along with any trace of his injuries. He was in perfect health again after only six months. If he turned me after the delivery, then maybe I could use that healing power to lose my baby fat.

“Is that so?” I said sarcastically. “I know I’ve been craving that big dick of yours all day. Is that enough craving for you?”

We skipped the ice cream, but I got the dick.

With my belly growing, I’d become quite fond of being on top. Cowgirl, reverse cowgirl, whatever. I just loved sinking down on that always-hard cock and feeling it enter me, inch by delicious inch, with me always in control. Terrance didn’t seem to mind that being our predominant position for a while. He said it let him stare at my body as I closed my eyes and rode him.

He also loved that I’d apparently developed a craving for semen as well. Maybe it was a pregnancy thing, or maybe it had something to do with me carrying a vampire’s baby. All I knew what that I couldn’t get enough and usually insisted that he finish somewhere where I could enjoy my little treat.

As we lay in bed a couple of hours later, I lazily played with Terrance’s cock as he stroked my belly. Quid pro quo and all.

“What will we do when the baby’s born?” I asked dreamily.

“Once we know he’s healthy, we’ll move to
Paris. You will love being the queen of my castle there.”

“Is it really a castle?” I asked.

He grinned. “Figure of speech. But it’s big enough to be one.” His fingers continued sliding over my pregnant belly.

I pouted playfully. “And who says the baby’s going to be a boy? Maybe I’d prefer a girl.”

  “I’ll be happy either way.”

I was lost in thought for a moment, running my finger over the tip of his cock. “Will our baby be powerful like Aadya was?”

“That would be something, wouldn’t it?” He shook his head in wonderment. “I guess we’ll find out soon enough.”

“How can we move to Paris?” I asked. “What about Magnus and the Tiras Asinis?”

He moved his eyes from my belly to my face, and his tone became serious.

“Sagan, I’ve already begun contacting other vampires to put an end Tiras Asinis and their backwards ways forever. A war between good and evil is brewing amongst the Kindred. This insanity has been going on for far too long, and I’m going to be the one to stop it.”

I had never loved Terrance as much as I did in that moment. He was a vampire, but he knew right from wrong and I had no doubt he’d be a loving father. Plus he was the bravest person I’d ever known.

I returned his somber look and said, “After more than two millennia, I’d say it’s about time. Please let me know what steps you take, because I don’t want any of this to surprise me. I can’t afford to lose you.”

“I’m not going anywhere, baby. Not when a body this perfect awaits me in my bed every night.”

“Our bed,” I corrected him. “And our living room, and our pool and hot tub, and our kitchen at least twice last week alone.”

He smiled. “And in the doorway that night you insisted on going down on me before I could even get the gate open.”

“Ah, yes,” I replied. “That was one of my favorites.”

His cock began to stiffen in my hand. “You’re thinking about it right now, aren’t you?” I asked.

  “Maybe,” he grinned.

“Don’t stop,” I said. “Close your eyes and imagine it as if you were there. Watch me drop to my knees and feel my mouth as if closes over you.”

I lowered my lips to his cock to lend a little realism to his thoughts. As I sucked him, I was torn between letting him finish in my mouth or climbing on that impressive cock and riding it to a huge orgasm.

Then I remembered that Terrance was a vampire. No need to choose; I could have both.

So I did. And I could still taste him in my mouth when I came hard, grinding myself against the base of his hard-on to a glorious orgasm.

Afterward, we lay in bed, his arm around my shoulders and my hands playing with his fingers in front of my face.

“I like the idea of Paris, baby.’ I said. “I love it here, and it’s so beautiful, but it doesn’t feel like home.”

Terrance took my hand in his and gently squeezed it as he turned his head toward me and planted a soft kiss on my temple.

Then he placed his mouth next to my ear and whispered.

“Home is wherever the three of us are, my love.”
