Trials of Truth

This book is also my humble attempt to bridge the gap between lawyers and non-lawyers and to present a blow-by-blow account of the cases, unravel the real story, look beyond to the persons involved, the raison d’être, the societal impact and the course of justice.
Through these chapters I have attempted to set out my own growth as a lawyer over the years. My perception of justice and the impact that some of these cases left on me motivated me to try to make it a better world—not necessarily a (utopian) crime-free society but at least a world where justice was done and seen to be done.

Acknowledgements
No man—or woman—is an island unto himself or herself. John Donne’s famous words hold true for all times, including our own, and for almost all purposes, including this book, which makes an acknowledgements section not only proper but also necessary.
This book is the outcome not only of my own efforts but also of the support lent by a large number of people, the foremost of whom is my husband, Devendranath Goburdhun. His constant presence by my side and unwavering support in all my endeavours has been the reason why I could manage to do justice to most, if not all, of them.
If my husband has been a pillar of support at all times, my daughter, Gauri Goburdhun, has been the principal driving force. Without her, this book would have remained a mere idea.
I thank my mother, Padma Anand, for her support and encouragement, and I also thank the other members of my family for having been patient with me whenever I’ve been too busy to spend time with them due to my professional exigencies. Their support has been vital to the completion of this book—as crucial as the support they have unwaveringly extended so far for whatever else I have managed to successfully attempt in life.
I am grateful to Shobhaa Dé for being an inexhaustible source of support and inspiration to me.
I would also like to thank Milee and Roshini for their patience and for putting up with me through numerous missed deadlines.
Last but not the least—and not just in a manner of speaking, but sincerely—I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Saudamini, Karan, Devina and my entire office for tolerating the long working hours and untimely demands. I thank them for the countless times they adjusted and readjusted their schedules to accommodate the demands made on them.
In the end, I offer my special thanks to all those who do not find a mention here but who have contributed to my personal and professional life in their own big and small ways.
