Neo, Lloyd, Isabella...
What kind of a scheme had they cooked up behind my back?
And I had no doubt that this wasn’t an accidental cooperation. They must have come up with this little plot well in advance. No wonder Neo had to destroy the ghost of the Grand Magister and channel all the powers of the Silver Phoenix to himself. That’s how he must have struck up a cooperation with the Shadow Puppeteer while mustering up enough strength to take over a Tower of Power.
What a great plan! In exchange for the skull, the Shadow Puppeteer had given Neo his old kingdom. Isabella had risen dramatically through the ranks while Lloyd had rerouted the Tower of Decay’s impressive cash flow to himself, receiving the funds raised by the resale of the tower’s trophies. I had little doubt that this was the source of their settlement with me.
I felt a bit hurt. They could have clued me in, instead of using me on the sly. Some friends! Having said that... who said they were my friends?
Whatever my mind might have envisioned, the universe of the Towers of Power was not a patch on reality. A virtual world called for virtual relationships.
Virtual everything, come to think of it.
I took another glance at my phone screen and chuckled. Virtual or not, the money that had just been credited to my account was very real. Which was good news, I suppose.
I only regretted I couldn’t box Neo’s ears for him. It might be politically incorrect but he could use a dose of tough love. A flippin’ Lord of the Tower of the Black Phoenix! I shook my head in disbelief, remembering our first meeting.
Never mind, kid. Good luck to you in your new venture. Me too, I had to start thinking of how to make a new life for myself IRL. It might not be as exciting as chopping up monsters but this life too had its good moments. There had to be a bottle of something cold still left in the fridge. The live broadcast of the slaughter in the kingdom of the dead was in full swing. And as for real life... I could start growing back into it tomorrow.
Or the day after. Because I was dying to find out how all this was going to pan out. To watch the battle run its course, as an observer at least. Because to be honest, had it not been for me...
Ah, what the hell! Where did they accept bets on Chaos?
