The Jilted Jinn

When I thought about it, I always blushed. And then I smiled. Because Martin was...amazing.

He grinned at me as he saw the color form on my cheeks. “Those were my favorite weeks, too.”

  I laughed.

Things had been kind of weird lately. Since I’d chosen Martin, the magic blocking my ability to glamour had faded away. I took no chances, though. I’d gone straight to the Comey sisters once I realized it and asked them to see if they could come up with the spell that would make people forget who I was once they left my shop. The price they quoted me almost made me swallow my tongue, but I told them if they could do it, I would pay it.

It helped that I’d finally opened the check from the Lupin pack. I’d immediately contacted Mark to tell him the check was incorrect, but he cut me off before I could protest. “One of our pack left you at the altar. The other tried to force you into dating him.” He sighed then. “And the third was going to kidnap you and force you into submission. Shut up, Katie, and enjoy your windfall. One day I may need your services.”

So I shut up and enjoyed my windfall. Martin had damn near lost his mind when he saw the amount of the check and proclaimed he should have charged me a lot more on my house.

I’d punched him in the ribs.

A sleek green Jaguar pulled into the driveway and I sat up, alarmed. Portia freaking Kadish stepped out of the car and walked over to us.

“Go away,” I said in greeting.

Her eyes flashed with surprise and annoyance but she stood her ground. “I’m here to see if you would like to take the final step and secure your soulmate bond through the act of marr -”

  “Go. Away. Portia,” growled Martin.

The founder of the town and the Deadicated Dating Agency looked us both over for a minute before she gave a short nod and got back into her car. When she left I let out a deep breath.

  “I truly hate that woman.”

  “Mutual,” said Martin.

We picked up our margarita glasses and clinked them together.

Moments later, we heard a feminine shriek and saw a blond woman racing down the road chasing after something that looked suspiciously like -

“Holy shit,” I said. “Is that a zombie?”

Helen Reaper was yelling her head off as she raced after the surprisingly agile corpse.

I shook my head. “I don’t even want to know.”

But I couldn’t squash the feeling that whatever this was had the potential to come back and bite us in the ass.

  Very soon.
