Just when I think he can’t surprise me.
“So, what’s the first step to taking down Izan?” he asked, his tone almost forcefully cheery as he looped his arm through hers. “Espionage? Assembling an army? Ruining his reputation?”
Ria’s stomach grumbled. “I was thinking more along the lines of breakfast.”
“Mortals,” he said, rolling his eyes.
But later, down in the kitchens where they met the rest of Bophur’s crew, it did not escape Ria’s notice that Peryn’s plate was piled high with just as many pancakes as her own.

Acknowledgements
None of this would have been possible without the tremendous love and encouragement from my family and friends. Thank you to everyone for sticking by me through countless story ideas, re-writes, false-starts, and drafts that will never see the light of day.
Thank you to Jane Fenton, my wonderful mother, editor, sometimes-positivity-coach, and fellow author for seeing the good in my book when I couldn’t. Thank you for guiding me both in life and through the process of self-publishing. I’m grateful to share in this adventure with you.
Thanks to all the wonderful people who suffered through my spelling mistakes and plot inconsistencies to help make this book the best it could be: Candy Andrzejewski, Debbie Teeple, Sue Quaintance, Jane Fenton, and Hannah Shipp. Your insight and encouragement were invaluable.
Thank you to Dennis Rider, whose anticipation for this story and constant questioning of, “Is it done?” and, “When can I read it?” forced me to sit in the chair and write. Denny, your excitement is infectious.
And finally, a tremendous thanks to Hannah Shipp, without whom this story would have never existed. Thank you for asking for bedtime stories at 2 am, for listening to my ramblings, for dragging me on late night adventures, and for constantly inspiring me with your fearlessness and ferocity. Thank you, best friend.
