“If you're confident that you're strong, then you can take the risk to be with me. So, none of this is about me. I'd like to stay here with you, and I can't guarantee that ten years from now I won't need to leave, but I am certain that if I get really homesick, I'll just make a point to travel there now and again before I just pack up and disappear forever. And I do know that I'm willing to give it a try, to really work it out. Because best-case scenario, things go really well, and we get a happily-ever-after."
He blinked at her. “You’re right.”
She rolled her eyes and smiled. "Of course, I am. But which part?"
"About me being strong enough to take the risk to know that whatever happens, I can deal with what comes my way. And that the way I feel for you, it's worth going into the unknown."
He held her hand and pulled her close. "I'm sorry for doing that to you." He kissed her. "And thank you for saving me."
Epilogue
Willow woke in her royal suite, her husband by her side. She was still getting used to being a queen, but she learned quickly that it didn't change the way you feel. She was still Willow, but she wore a crown of responsibility and had a husband who wore one too.
As a team, they’d been able to implement changes that would prevent breaches to the Old One security. They’d started right away, or rather, as soon as they were married, and Graham’s parents stepped down to have a restful retirement and hand over all their duties to the newlyweds.
Since then, Graham and Willow saw the Ursanis technology used to secure monitoring around the Old One. They also announced that Ursanis would allow visitors, and they created a department whose job it was to review applications and approve visitor visas.
One thing that Willow was especially proud of was the invitation for grindylows to join the community. Since they didn’t breathe air, this meant sectioning off a portion of Ursanis that would be full of water. To her delight, many Ursanis residents cheered the change, as they wanted to amalgamate with the grindylows and spend more time in the water.
“What are you thinking about, wife?” Graham rolled over, putting his arm around her.
“I think we’re doing good things.” She turned over and kissed him, then snuggled into him. “I’m proud of the changes we’ve made.”
His hand stroked her side, stopping on her hip where he’d left his mark. “I hadn’t thought any of this was possible before I met you.”
She knew he’d been afraid of finding a mate and then losing her, but in the short time they’d been together, Willow knew he’d learned to trust. He didn’t live in fear that she was a step away from running. And when she did get homesick or itching to walk on land, he went with her, leaving his trusty second, Monty, in command.
“It’s worth keeping an open mind and seeing what life has in store for you, huh?" Willow smiled devilishly at him.
“Yes, Queen Willow, and may you never let me forget it.” He pulled her under him, smiling back, and kissing her deeply before they made love as they did every morning.
