Rebirthing in your arms

“He’s just a friend. Fine, you win! I’ll stay here for a while but while I convince you, you’ll have to come with me. Remember your treatment is in San Francisco, not here.”
“You will do that for me? You’ll stay?” She asked with tears in her eyes. “We’ll do the following; you and Nick can stay in my room and I’ll stay in yours or in the guest room.”
“No! He’s going back to California today.”
After eating, Deb and Mark left to Sacramento, and David went back to Canada with his family.
Judith, taking the urn with Gus’ ashes, asked to be excused and went up to her bedroom to rest.
Evelyn went out with Nick to the deck and sat on an old swing that still remained in the house. She looked around; at the trees, the street, red and orange leaves were all over the place.
“Are you leaving?” Evelyn asked.
“I don’t want to, but I have to go back to work. Ralph called me to let me know some clients wanted to change something in the divorce agreement.
“Oh!”
“Eve...There is something I need to talk to you about.”
“Of course.” She had a bad feeling about this.
“I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you.”
“Oh, Nick! Why did you have to ruin it? We had an amazing time together, but nothing more. We can still see each other once in a while, nothing serious.”
“I don’t want to see you once in a while, I want to have you by my side forever. I think I fell in love with you when I saw your bare back and your furious eyes that tried to kill me.”
Evelyn smiled and he ran his fingers on her cheek.
“I don’t like commitments, I did it once with Sam and it didn’t work.”
“But I’m not Sam, I’m Nicodemo Andereatos, and I love you Evelyn Thomas. I will do anything for you to take me, I’ll come to Michigan if I have to, I’d jump out of a plane without a parachute, just say yes.”
Evelyn got up from the swing and Nick went after her, he took her by the wrist and hugged her, but she put her hands in front of her trying to back off.
“I’m sorry.” She said and went back inside.
Nick stood there staring at the closed door, and then he walked towards the rented car. He looked at Evelyn’s house one last time to see if Evelyn had changed her mind, but it wasn’t like that. He got in the car and headed to the airport.
Evelyn observed him through the window as Nick left, it’s what she wanted him to do, but why did she feel so upset? She felt a huge emptiness in her stomach. She walked all over the house, thinking, searching for an explanation for her discomfort without success, because if there was one, she didn’t want to admit to it. Suddenly she remembered the first time she was with him, his craziness following her to Greece, the sailboat surprise and all the little details that he continuously had with her. Nick as a wonderful spontaneous, passionate, and tender man she always needed. Damn Nick.
“Mom!! I’m taking dad’s car!!”
She didn’t wait for Judith to respond; she took the keys of his father’s station wagon and headed out the door, she had to get to Nick before he got on the plane. It was a half hour drive. She looked at her watch and realized she had no idea the time the plane was scheduled for or the flight number. She was so careless she didn’t even care to ask.
After a while that seemed forever, she arrived at the airport. She parked badly and rushed to the entrance. She looked at the flights and there was only one to Sacramento. She went to the counter and asked for Nick, they informed her he still hadn’t checked in. She decided to look for him. Then it occurred to her they could call him on the speaker. She smiled when she heard a feminine voice say:
“Mr. Nicodemo Andreatos, it is urgently for you to come to the American Airlines counter, there’s a desperate girlfriend here waiting for you.”
They called three times and there was no response. Nick did not show. He probably had taken another flight, maybe he wasn’t even going to Sacramento, and he was traveling to Los Angeles or New York instead. She thanked the lady and left.
She lost him because of her stupidity, he had promised he would win over her heart and he had, she just did want to admit it and now it was too late. He probably didn’t want to know anything about her now and she couldn’t blame him. Damn Nick.
She got home and there was a car she couldn’t recognize parked in the driveway. It was getting dark out and she couldn’t see who it was.
Evelyn got out of the car and started yelling.
“Hey!! Get your car out of my driveway!!”
She then saw the person getting out of the car and was walking towards her.
“Nick!! Nick!!” Evelyn ran to him and she jumped into his arms.
“I’m not hard to kill, I’m hard to drive away.” He said and kissed her.
“I love you, I love you. I didn’t want to but I love you. Promise me you’ll never leave me.”
“I will never leave you because I love you too much.”
“How?...why did you come back?”
“I was at the airport when I remembered a promise I made myself.”
“What promise?”
“The night we spent together in Los Angeles, next day I promised that I could come and find you and that you won’t get away from me. I left the airport to get the car, but they gave me another one, that’s why you didn’t recognize it.”
“I went to look for you and didn’t find you. I even had them call you on the speaker. I thought you left to another city other than Sacramento.”
“No, I was here thinking about what to say to convince you that my love for you is real.”
“You don’t have to convince me, I already know.”
“I also brought this.”
Evelyn just noticed that he had a bag and a small box.
“Avocados?” She said opening the bag.
“And this.” Nick said while opening the little box. It was a beautiful ancient engagement ring.
“Nick!”
“It has been in my family for generations. Mom gave it to me.”
“Your ex never had it?”
“She said she didn’t like old things. Do you accept to become Mrs. Evelyn Andreatos?”
“I do, I do. Tomorrow if you want.”
“I love you. Can I stay with you tonight?”
“You already won my mom over, she has it all planned. I love you.”
“I love you.”
Epilogue
