  “Yes,” Corinne said.

“We are too,” she said gesturing to her daughter and grandchildren.

  “It’s good to see you.”

Doris beamed. “It’s even better to see you. You look happy.”

  “I am.”

“That’s good.” She tugged on her ear and Corinne noticed that her earring was shaped like stockings.

  “Wait, are you—”

  “Mom!”

Corinne turned at the sound of her son’s voice and saw the train doors were open. She hadn’t heard it arrive. In a few seconds the doors would close. She saw Jason frantically waving her forward and then she noticed Brett.

  Their eyes met.

She couldn’t completely read the expression in his gaze but she saw some uncertainty. She remembered the first time they’d met. How she’d watched the train doors close between them.

  She started to run.

It felt good to run towards something.

  Her beautiful family.

  A beautiful future.

This was not a train she was going to miss. She jumped onboard just as the doors began to close. Brett grabbed her when she stumbled against him.

“That wasn’t a good idea,” he said, but he sounded relieved and the apprehension that had touched his gaze was gone.

Corinne laughed at his scolding and said with a heart full of joy, “Actually, I think it was one of my best ideas yet.”
