Blood Magic (Blood Magic Series Book 1)

“I’ll remember,” I told her as the night wind blew against my wet cheeks. And when I watched her step into the little circle of mushrooms she called a faerie ring, I held my breath. And when she spoke the words that would take her home, I bit my lip. And when the brief flash of light that illuminated her took her away, I sank to the ground on my knees.
Mason was beside me in an instant, and he wrapped his arms around me as I cried. After I’d calmed myself down, we lay back and looked up at the stars. This night was too beautiful to waste on sadness, so I tabled the grief and allowed my heart to fill with another emotion as I turned to look at him. I couldn’t help but be amazed that he was here with me, and I will always be grateful for the gifts that allowed me to save his life. He had been totally freaked out when Ella had explained it to him, but that had quickly been replaced with awe. He’d said that I was a miracle worker, and I’d told him he was my miracle, because loving him saves my life everyday, so in a way I’d saved us both.
He allowed the silence to wash over us and through us for a little while longer before dropping another bombshell on me.
“There’s probably one more thing I should tell you,” he said.
“I’m afraid to ask,” I said with a groan.
“It’s nothing bad. I promise. It’s just that we are going to have a new addition to our household when we get home. My father is back.”
I was a little surprised by this. I’d almost forgotten he had one. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever even seen a picture of him.
“I’ll look forward to meeting him,” I finally said.
“You kind of already have,” he said sheepishly.
A look of confusion briefly crossed my face, and then a little gasp of surprise escaped my lips.
“It’s Thomas, isn’t it? Thomas Abbot? I saw him in my dreams of Salem.”
“Yeah.”
“And you kept him away because you thought I’d freak out over seeing two people from my dreams in real life?”
“Yes.”
“But why didn’t he come back after I knew everything?”
“You didn’t exactly handle things very well,” he said. “Are you mad?”
I considered it for a brief moment. “No,” I sighed, “I’ve learned the hard way that I’d much rather love you than waste time being mad at you.”
He smiled. “Good. So do you want me to tell you the whole story of how this came to be?”
“Tell me later. Right now, I just wanna be in this moment with you.”
“And what exactly do you think we should do in this moment?” he asked.
A mischievous glint shone in my eyes when he looked over at me, but before he had time to question me, I had draped my body across his and started kissing him. He responded immediately. His hands roamed possessively over me, and then one of his hands slid under my shirt slightly grazing the swell of my breast. My breathing quickened, and my blood burned. My heart raced, and my body quivered.
“I love you,” I whispered against his neck, “but someone once told me that nothing worth having comes easily.” I grinned and bit his lower lip as I got up and ran into the trees giggling.
He was after me quickly, but not quickly enough. I dodged and ducked and hid behind trees, but my laughter always gave me away, and when he finally caught me, his eyes were glowing and his fangs were out. He growled as he pinned me against the tree, and I laughed as he pretended to bite my neck.
It was the same game we’d played in Salem (minus the fangs of course). And surrounded by trees and darkness with a canopy of stars above and a bed of pine needles below, it felt as if no time had passed at all. All signs of playfulness vanished as we sank to the forest floor, and time was only a word. It had no power over us anymore, because we no longer had to say goodbye.
The End … for now.
