  “Probably. Lois is a kind-hearted woman. She still thinks what happened was her fault.”

  He curved an arm under her head and gazed down at her and the baby. “Have I told ye today that I love ye, Katie?”

  “Yes.” She smiled. “But I wouldn’t mind hearing it again.”

  His lips brushed hers. “I love ye.”

  “And I love you.” Kate glanced down at the baby. “Thank you, Angus.”

  “For what?” His finger traced her jaw line.

  “For giving me the courage to face the past. None of this would have been possible without you.”

  “Ye always had the courage, Katie. Ye only needed a reason tae do it. Maybe it took being a mistress tae turn ye into a wife and mother.”

  “Maybe.” She smiled. “But I’m making you another promise right now. You’re going to be stuck with the mistress for the rest of our lives.”

  His smile was full of smug satisfaction as he held her. “I can live with that.”
