“Well I can’t help you there. The boys get about. You know how boy’s are. You are better off asking their friends.”
“I already did.”
“Then why are asking me. Now get out of my way and be on with your business.”
“You are my business.” Tyrone said menacingly.
“Oh really. And stopping old ladies and young girls makes you a proper man does it. A fine business to be in, your mother must be so proud of you.”
“Your boy shot my cousin.”
“Well I don’t know anything about that. I’m sure you tell your mother about all the trouble you get up to. You are all as bad as each other. Like children.”
Tyrone became impatient.
“I’m not gonna ask you again. Where is he?”
“And I told you I don’t know where they are. And if I did I wouldn’t tell you.”
Caitlin said annoyed. Tyrone nodded. He looked at Natasha.
“You’re Danny Finn’s bird innit?” he said. Natasha didn’t respond.
“Leave the girl alone.”
“Well I want you to give your boys a message.” Tyrone said.
“And what would that be.”
Tyrone without warning punched Caitlin in the stomach then in the face knocking her out.
“Leave her alone!” Natasha said rushing to Caitlin’s aid.
“No I don’t think I will.” Tyrone said and started kicking Caitlin on the floor. Natasha did her best to protect Caitlin but was no match for the gang, 2 of Tyrones men pulled her away and restrained her as Tyrone continued to kick Caitlin on the floor. Rochelle lit a cigarette and put her arms across her chest.
“That’s enough. Ty, enough!” Rochelle said.
He stared at her with wild eyes.
“Shut up bitch. I’ll tell you when shes had enough.” He said delivering a final hefty kick into Caitlin’s ribs. Natasha cried and struggled as Tyrone took out a glock and pointed it sideways at Caitlin his face psychotic with rage, he pulled the trigger and fired three times into her. Natasha stopped crying and stared with shock.
“Ty! For fucks sake you’ll get us all banged up.” Rochelle said.
Ty pushed her out of the way and turned his attention to Natasha.
“So you’re Danny’s bitch then?”
“He’ll fucking kill you for this!” Natasha spat at him angrily.
“Yeah? Well maybe I better give him another reason to come and find me then.”
He punched Natasha as hard as he could in the stomach, she doubled up in pain and gasped for breath before he slapped her across the face with the back of the pistol her men letting her fall to the floor. Tyrone aimed the pistol down at her.
“Ty! For fucks sake!” Rochelle said.
“I told you to shut it!” tyrone said.
The sirens grew louder as 4 police cars approached from the bottom of the hill.
“For fucks sake Tyrone. I’m out of here” said the leader of his gang and raced back to the Mercedes. Tyrone stared at the approaching police cars who were now in full view of the scene. He yelled angrily and ran back after the others and dived into the back of the Mercedes. They pulled away wheelspinning pursued by 2 of the armed police response units as the remaining two stopped and exited the vehicle running over to Caitlin and Natasha.
“Are you alright love?” she asked Natasha, Natasha coughed up blood and passed out.
DANNY STARED THROUGH the glass at Natasha lying motionless, wired to life support systems in the intensive care unit.
A doctor approached. “Are you her next of kin?”
“No…no…well yes. We’re getting married,” Danny said, wiping the tears off his face.
“She’s sustained quite serious internal injuries and a severe concussion, there’s some swelling on the brain. We’re keeping her sedated until the swelling subsides.”
“Will be she okay?”
“She’s critical. But she’s young, if she stabilises then she has a good chance. I’m afraid I do have some bad news though. She had a miscarriage. I’m afraid she’s lost her baby.”
Danny nodded. “Okay.”
“Is there anyone we can call? Parents?”
“No I’ll do it.” Danny said.
The doctor nodded. “I’m Sorry. We couldn’t do anything for your mother. She was pronounced dead on arrival.”
Danny nodded. “Thank you doctor.”
“If you need to speak to someone there’s a counsellor available.”
“Just a priest.”
“Of course. He’s with your mother now. He’ll be with you shortly. My sympathy for your loss.”
Danny nodded and stared back at Natasha. The doctor departed quietly as Micky and Billy rushed down the corridor.
“Where is she? Where is Ma?” Micky asked. Danny shook his head. Micky frowned. “What do you mean? Where the fuck is Ma?”
“She’s dead. They killed her,” Danny said, then glared at Micky. “You killed her. With your fucking psychotic stupidity. She was right. It’s always you isn’t it Micky?”
Micky looked emotional annoyed. “You’re blaming me?”
Danny turned to him and landed a punch on him. The hospital porters rushed to grab them and break up the fight.
“I’ll fucking kill you Micky, I swear to god! I’m going to fuckin’ kill you!” Danny yelled as they restrained him on the floor.
“Yeah? You and whose fuckin’ army!” Micky yelled back, being restrained by the security who pulled him away. Danny glared at Micky with hatred. “Alright, let go of me. I’m fuckin’ leavin’ alright?” Micky said brushing off his captors. He stared at Danny still restrained on the floor and took a deep breath. “You’re upset. We’re all upset. But don’t go sayin’ things you don’t mean. We’re brothers. We’re family. We’ve got to stick together and deal with this.”
Danny stopped struggling, the security guards let him go. He got up and pulled his jacket straight and walked over to Micky. “You’re no brother of mine,” he said and walked away.
DANNY SAT IN the hospital chaplain with his head in his hands. The priest put an arm around him to comfort him.
“Are we being punished Father?” Danny asked.
The priest smiled softly. “We live in a violent world my son. These things test our faith. What’s important we keep that faith and don’t give in to violence.”
“And what would you do?”
“Evil begets evil. You could go looking for vengeance, but it’s not a way out. It only sucks you further in. Walk away son. Accept what is done is done. More bloodshed will not bring your mother back.”
“You think they should get away with it?”
“There is more than one form of justice. What would she want you to do?”
“Leave it.”
“Then the best way you can honour her memory is to do just that. Don’t stain her character by putting blood on your hands in her name.”
Danny nodded. “Micky has enough blood on his hands for all of us.”
“But you can choose to walk your own path. You are not your brother’s keeper.”
“Thank you Father.”
“I’ll pray for Natasha.”
Danny nodded. “Pray for all of us,” Danny said getting up. “No good will come of this.”
MICKY KICKED THE front door to the rundown crack-den off its hinges, the smell was repulsive but he was in such a rage he didn’t notice.
“Tommy! Where the fuck are ya Tommy?” He yelled as his eyes searched around the dark shabby room full of wasted junkies. “I’ll find ya Tommy!”
Micky searched the house and found Tommy lying wasted on an old mattress in a bedroom. Micky grabbed him by his hair and picked him up and threw him against a wall, the barely conscious Tommy hardly even responded.
“Where the fuck is he? Tyrone? Where is he Tommy?”
“I don’t know man…” Tommy said with a slur as he started to pass out.
Micky landed him a heavy kick to the ribs.
&
nbsp; “I’m not gonna ask you again Tommy. I know you spoke to him. Where is he?”
“I told you man. He was by the lock.”
“I looked there. Where does he hang out in Camden? He must be here somewhere.”
“I don’t know man…” replied Tommy.
Micky started a violent assault against him, he picked up a chair and smashed it against him before breaking off a leg and beating Tommy with it.
“Stop Micky, for fuck’s sake! Stop! I don’t know about nothing in Camden. I only know he’s down in Brixton. His brother Jules sells smack outside Brixton tube station. He’ll know where he’s at!”
“Did you tell em? Did you tell Tyrone where to find Ma?”
“I didn’t tell him nothin’!”
“I don’t believe ya,” Micky said kicking Tommy again.
“I swear. It’s the truth. I said nothing man. I’m with you Micky! I’m with you.”
“No Tommy. You fuckin aint…” Micky said, took out his Glock and shot Tommy twice through the head.
Micky walked down to the phone box and dialled a number. Billy answered from another phone box.
“Billy. We’re going to Brixton. Get what you need and meet me at the Town tube.”
“What about Danny?” asked Billy.
“Nah,” replied Micky, wiping his nose. “He’s not with us now. It’s just us.”
“I don’t know Micky. Tyrone’s crew. They are expectin’ it.”
“This is our Ma we are talkin’ about. Just because Danny hasn’t got the minerals for it I don’t want you going soft on me now. It’s just you and me now brother.”
“Alright Micky. I’ll be there in fifteen minutes.”
Micky hung up the call and checked his pistol before walking smartly down towards the High Street.
If Tyrone wanted a war, that was exactly what Micky would give him, and since Tyrone had already set the rules, Micky would go out of his away to ensure his revenge was even more brutal, horrific, and traumatic for his victims.
THE PRISON HAD granted Danny a special emergency visit to Sharky due to their family bereavement.
Danny sat in the cold private visit room as the prison officer led him in handcuffed. He looked older than Danny remembered, prison seemed to do that to people. Drained the life from them until they became grey and empty. Sharky sat down. Despite the turmoil their family was in like his father Sharky wasn’t especially emotionally warm and kept his feelings locked away.
“How are you?” Sharky asked Danny. Danny shrugged his shoulders. “Natasha?” he asked.
Danny drew a deep breath. “She lost it. She lost the baby. The doctors think she will be okay. Maybe.”
Sharky nodded and flashed a smile.“That’s something at least. You have to take care of her.”
Danny nodded. “Will they let you out for it? The funeral?”
“Yes,” replied Sharky. He leant forward to Danny and spoked in a hushed tone. “Who did this?” he asked.
Danny stared at him. “Tyrone.”
“Why?” Sharky asked.
“Micky took out his cousin down on the lock a couple of weeks back.”
Sharky’s anger peaked. He did his best to control it and calm down.
“What do you want me to do Sharky?” Danny asked.
“What do you want to do?”
Danny shook his head. “I don’t know. Doesn’t seem much sense in anything,” he replied. Danny wiped a tear from his eye. “I can’t let Natasha down. She doesn’t have anyone. Not with her dad and that. And now with Ma gone…” he shook his head. “I can’t make this worse Sharky.”
“Then don’t make it worse Danny. Ma wouldn’t want it. I don’t want it. You don’t want to end up in here like me.”
“No.”
“Get out Danny. This Tyrone thing. Leave it. Let it go, take Natasha and leave.”
“How am I supposed to do that?”
Sharky leant forward and whispered. “The allotment. Dad’s allotment. In the shed, under the potting table. There’s something for you. There’s enough to make a new life with Natasha. Take it and go to your Uncle’s in New York. Don’t come back. You promise me Danny?”
“I can’t leave you,” Danny said
“You can’t do anything for me. I’m not getting out Danny. Go. Have a life. Stay out of trouble.” Sharky said.
“Okay,” Danny replied reluctantly.
“Good lad. Ma was always proud of you. You know that? You were always the good one she said. Make her proud Danny. Don’t be like us.”
“I’ll try.”
“Micky?”
“You know Micky.”
“Stay away from him.” Sharky said.
“Okay.”
Danny left the prison and went straight to the allotment. Under a pile of old bricks he found a makeshift wooden floor, removing it and digging down he found a large metal box. He undid it and revealed more than one million in cash. The collective fortune from Sharky’s loan business. He instinctively looked around to see if he was being watched but the allotment was deserted. He looked thoughtful for a moment. With Tyrone on the loose and looking for him it would be too dangerous to have the money now, it was safe here. While Natasha was still in hospital he would leave it in case something happened to it and she needed it.
Danny locked the box up and replaced it, careful to restore its hiding place to the way he found it. He walked out of the allotment shed and locked the door and lit a cigarette before heading off to catch a bus to go down to the hospital.
Natasha had come out of her coma when he arrived, out of danger, the doctor finally allowed him to see her, he walked in quietly and sat next to her bed.
She looked across at him and managed a half smile. “You’re okay…” she said, relieved, concerned Tyrone had caught up with him.
“I’m fine. What about you?” he asked. She nodded. “I’m sorry.” Danny said.
“What are you sorry for?” she replied. “it wasn’t you.”
“I should have taken better care of you.”
“How were you to know? I don’t blame you. I blame Micky.”
Danny nodded. Natasha looked at him.
“They told you? About the baby?”
“Yes,” said Danny.
Natasha nodded. “They said…they said I might not be able to have children. The surgery they did. From the damage…” Natasha said, tears rolling down her cheeks. “At least my dad won’t have to worry about me getting knocked up again.”
“I went to the house to tell them. They wouldn’t answer. I left a note. Have they been?” Danny asked.
Natasha shook her head. “When they told me, I just wanted my mum. I just wanted her to hug me and hold me and make it all better. But she wasn’t here. Nobody was here,” she said and looked at Danny, moved her hand over to take his. “I’m sorry about your mum. She didn’t deserve that. I tried to stop them…”
“It’s not your fault,” Danny said. “There was nothing you could have done. I’m just glad you are okay. Well as well as you could be given…”
Natasha nodded. “What will you do?”
“I spoke to Sharky.”
“What did he say?”
“He’s given us something. To go away with. We can go to my uncle’s in New York. I called him. They’re expecting us.”
Natasha smiled. “He told you not to go after them didn’t he?”
“How did you know?”
“Because it’s what I would have said. I guess I don’t have to now. Big brother carries more weight.”
“I didn’t want to. I know Micky thinks I'm a coward. But it won’t bring any of it back. It will just make it worse. Besides Ma wouldn’t want it.”
“I don’t think you are a coward. I think you are being brave. It’s much harder to swallow pride and not give in to revenge.”
“Micky is going to start a war,” Danny said.
“Then let him fight it. Listen to Sharky.”
“I was worried you wouldn’
t…”
“Wouldn’t what?”
“Want to see me.”
Natasha squeezed Danny’s hand and shook her head. “You didn’t do this Danny. Any of it. It’s not your fault that your brother is a psychopath.”
“He’s not my brother,” Danny said. “After what he’s done. All this….” Danny shook his head. Natasha smiled. “It’ll be okay Danny. We’ll be okay.”
Danny took out a piece of paper. “Keep this safe,” he told her. “If anything happens to me…you’ll find everything you need here.”
Natasha frowned. “Nothing is going to happen to you.”
“Tyrone is still on the loose. You never know.”
“Be careful Danny. Promise me.”
“I’m gonna just pack some stuff. When you are better we can get out of here. I need to get your passport from your house. I don’t suppose your dad will give it me.”
“There’s a key. Under the large plant pot on the left side of the door. Wait until they are out and get my stuff.”
“Okay.”
“And make sure you don’t get caught. The last thing you want to do is go down for burglary,” she said and smiled.
MICKY MARCHED DOWN the high street. Billy threw his cigarette away and followed him into Camden Town tube station, they didn’t break step as they walked briskly down to the tube to head south.
“So what’s the plan?” Billy asked.
“I want Tyrone and the rest of his crew….and his family.”
“Micky, are you sure about this? Brixton is Tyrone’s manor. Going in just the pair of us versus that lot is a bit frisky isn’t it?”
Micky glared at him. “You haven’t got the bottle? He sent us a message. Let’s send him a bigger message. We go in there and we finish this. We show ‘em we don’t need a gang to deal with ‘em. Just you and me. the Finn brothers. After this people will cross the street to avoid us.”
Billy nodded, he knew better than to argue with Micky when he was in this kind of mood. The tube arrived and they headed south towards Brixton.
