  “Wife,” he murmured, cradling her within his embrace, and he cherished the sound of the word.

  On the Bealtuinn past, once Kane came to realize how near to death he was, his life was forever changed. He forecast to the future and saw his own fate, understanding he would not carry on until eternity. Where he tromped the battlegrounds prior, giving little regard to his own life much and tremendous loyalty to the Gaelic cause, Kane’s own mortality now became a real thing.

  He made love to Fallon the Bealtuinn day they returned from the fae domain. And then they washed in the dew before full dawn, seeking health and happiness.

  With one final rite in mind, the two of them revisited the knoll, to the now smoldering sacred pyres. Though there were no witnesses, as all were asleep, Kane took Fallon’s hand and they leapt the embers, sealing their marriage for a year and a day. But Kane knew it would be for much, much longer.

  He was thankful he rode into the village that day, looking to slake his lusts during the fertility celebrations, he instead found not only passion, but love in the enchanting flames.

  Oh, do not tell the Priest our plight,

  Or he would call it a sin;

  But we have been out in the woods all night,

  A-conjuring Summer in!
