Heat in the Air

She pulled back, the dark film coating the girl thick and unpleasant to her senses.

“Do you see a face? Get a sense of one?”

“That guy you killed, Kreema was one of Kryto’s brother’s. Tara told him Amara thought I was wind-marked, so he came to kill me and claim my powers.”

“Well, this is a game changer,” Tylor said as a blue ball formed on her palm.

“They are waiting for us to come out, but they’ll retreat in the light,” Camille murmured.

“Is it done?” Necron asked. His part of this had already been set into motion and would conclude by the time he arrived in New York. There would be no way to link anything back to him and he hoped Voltaire had set things up to prevent anything being linked back to the coven as well.

“Kreema is dead, otherwise everything is on track,” Voltaire told him. “The girl has been seeded, so we’ll have our spy inside.”

“Fantastic. I’ll be home in a few days and we can begin the next phase.”

“Don’t spend too many moments in her embrace,” Voltaire murmured. “I hate for you to smell like her.”

“Stop thinking about your libido. The future is more important.” He ended the call and stared out the window into the clouds. Day would be breaking in an hour, and the witches would be short some manpower. Defeating this generation had just gotten a little easier.

  Chapter Twenty-Six

“I’m going to have to cancel the celebration,” Amara told them as the sun fell over the dead, now all in one pile, several hours later. “I hate to let them ruin this day, but it wasn’t just us that was hit. Alice and Arielle reported several losses, but not as many as they pretended to a few supernatural sources.”

“We were the hardest hit,” Amollia told them. There are only four of us left. Alice and Arielle have already offered us aid. In the meantime, we’re not adding new members to the coven. All who are here are all that are invited to stay.”

“Tylor, I’d be happy if you and Camille joined us,” Amara said quietly.

Camille leaned into Tylor on the porch of their cabin. She sensed none of the coolness from yesterday in the other woman. It was as if this event had humbled her some.

Camille wanted to help her, but she kept silent remembering Tylor’s statement.

“I’d rather not,” Tylor told her. “But I’m willing to help.”

“Camille?” Amara asked with a frown.

  “I can’t.”

“I could get you both fired,” Amara said. “But I don’t suppose that would accomplish anything when we need your alliance.”

“We’ll accept an alliance,” Amollia said. “That doesn’t bind you to us, but there’s an open invitation to join if you change your mind.”

“We can give you that,” Tylor said quietly.

“This thing will only get nastier from here,” a man with gray at the temples said. “Kryto or his brother will attempt to exact vengeance on us.”

“Kryto will probably attempt to spin this to make it look as if we witches attacked his family because of the dual Congress,” Amollia murmured. “There are a few messages from someone in the compound inviting him here for a meeting.”

“Who would do that?” Camille asked. “You knew he was a demon.”

“It won’t matter,” Amara said. “All that matters now is we pull together to defeat them.”

“What if the attack on the others was a ploy to keep them from coming out here?” Camille asked.

Everyone looked at her and she shrank against Tylor’s side. Her lover caressed her back sending soothing energy into her.

Amara nodded. “It’s possible. We’ll never know for sure since Tylor overheard the plan at the club last night.”

“We’ll be sanctioned,” the man said angrily.

“Sam will do all she can, but it might not be enough. We might have to go into hiding.”

“It’ll make it hard for us to clear our coven, but—” Amara looked at Tylor then.

“I can’t help you,” Tylor said. “We didn’t sign on for this kind of entertainment. Camille and I are leaving.”

Camille blinked, surprised by the sudden about face and swayed when Tylor stepped away from her.

“Come on, Camille, if you want a ride home.”

“Tylor,” Amara snapped and followed her inside.

Camille turned to see Tara standing in the doorway. “I better go. It was nice meeting you all.” She headed inside in time to hear Amara’s plea.

“Tylor, we’ll need some extra help. We can’t put too much burden on Sam.”

“I’ll help you, but you need to keep that between just the four of us.”

  “Four?”

“Me, you, Amollia, and Camille. No one else can know what I do for you. You’ll risk our lives and our freedom.”

  “Fine.”

“If you’re forced underground, use the school to contact me. Aaron will be replaced as soon as possible, but make sure it’s with a trusted witch you can use.”

“I will. Now, tell me who you don’t trust.”

“I trust no one really, except Camille.”

Camille’s heart beat a little faster at the compliment.

“And what if the board fires you for being lovers?” Amara demanded.

“I could happen, so it’s best to just get a throwaway cell and contact me with it. Leave a message, and I’ll get back to you.”

“Don’t betray me, and you’ll have my loyalty, Tylor.”

  “The same.”

Amara gave a curt nod and exited the room, slowing down to give Camille a curious stare, but she didn’t speak. Camille entered the bedroom and Tylor glanced at her.

  “Grab your bag.”

  “We don’t have a choice?”

“No.” She headed for the door. “We can shower at my place.”

Camille went to Tylor and wrapped her arms around her. She kissed her cheek.

“I hate this has to be now, but I suppose you can’t stop reality while you fall in love, huh?”

Tylor smiled. “But it doesn’t follow that this won’t last.”

“And we won’t hide?” Camille asked.

Tylor kissed her softly. “We’ll live as we see fit and damn the rest.”

Camille chuckled. “I’m so scared, but with you at my side I’m ready to come out of the closet.”

“I think it’s time we both did,” she said and kissed Camille again before stroking her cheek. “Let’s go. Instinct is telling me we shouldn’t be here too much longer.” Tylor released Camille and grabbed her bag from the bed and headed for the door

Camille grabbed her bag and joined Tylor in the hallway. They were in the car and on the road in a matter of moments.

  “Do you trust her?”

“To be loyal? Hell no. She will be until she’s strong again.”

“Not an alliance worth keeping,” Camille said. “You didn’t tell her about Tara.”

“It’s better if Amara doesn’t keep too much from her. The demons will think they’ve gained a victory, but we know their next move, and we’ll use it to take out Necron.”

Camille gave her a look, her profile calculating. She didn’t argue because she had much to learn. She just put her hand on Tylor’s thigh and closed her eyes letting the motion lull her.

“In case you have doubts. I am falling madly in love with you, Cam.”

She smiled. “I’m already in love with you,” Cam said sleepily. “And I’m glad we’ll have forever together.”
