If Ever I Should Love You

Page 25

by Cathy Maxwell

So, what did a person who suffered from the disease of alcoholism do in those days? Of course, it was considered a character failing and usually they white knuckled it. They abstained, if they could. Samuel Johnson went back and forth over the years. He’d drink wine, switch to port only, then stop altogether for a period of time before wondering if he could enjoy a taste of wine. His wife was not able to control her vices.

Fortunately, Leonie wins over her tendency to drink. Yes, like so many of us, she will carry scars. However, one of the miracles of love is meeting someone who sees beyond our imperfections, who accepts that we have a past, and who is willing to build a future. Love has never required flawlessness.

I pray you have enjoyed Leonie and Roman’s story, I hope you are looking forward to Willa and Cassandra finding love, and I wish you many happy hours of reading.

  All my best,

  Cathy Maxwell
