Jake was hot on my heel. “Dude what the fuck were you doing?”
“Just leave it Jake!” I snapped, but he wouldn’t let it go.
He got in front of me. “She’s your sister. What are you doing kissing her?”
“Mind your own fucking business!” I shouted.
“She is my business!” He shouted back. I grabbed his shirt and pulled him face to face with me.
“She is mine not yours!” I yelled at him.
I felt Evelyn’s hand on my back. As she came between us she put her hands on my chest.
“Calm down.” She said pushing me away from Jake.
It was amazing how my whole mood would change when she told me to. I think I’d got it wrong all this time. She wasn’t mine, I was hers. Then she turned to Jake.
“I’m more than capable of looking after myself Jake. You don’t need to worry about me. I think we’re all just a little frightened and on edge. We should go.” Just as she said that we saw Mathew coming out from around the back of the house. He walked towards us and I went to him.
“Thank you for calling me.” I said to him.
“No problem. Now I know what all this is I hope I can help more. Oh, and they swept the forest, but they couldn’t find the cabin. I think it’s safe for you there.” He said.
“Do you know where their headquarters is?” Evelyn asked him.
“Well they are dotted everywhere, but the main one I’m sure is in Canada. It’s a massive military base, and Evelyn I’m so sorry that they imprisoned your mom. I swear I had no idea.” Mathew said to her.
“You mean that they killed her?” Evelyn said back, but it was more of a question.
“Oh no I’m sure she’s alive still.” He said.
Evelyn flew at him. They crashed to the ground as she grabbed his collar and position herself on his chest. I’d never seen her so angry.
“What do you mean she’s still alive? How do you know that?!”
Mathew was on his back looking up at her a little terrified. I reached down and pulled her off him. I wrapped my arms around her, so she wouldn’t attack our informant again. I think I was starting to like him now.
“Yeah your mum and dad are held in the main base. I know Sarah and Pete are in the New Orleans base and Caitlin your parents are in the Los Angeles base. It’s minimal security but the one in Canada will be impossible.”
Mathew got up slowly and pulled out his phone as it was buzzing. “That’s them now. I’ve got to go, and you need to leave asap. They are coming back.”
With that he took off running back into the woods. The implication was setting into both of us now, Our parents were alive but what did that mean for us.
