  Acknowledgments

Writing a book is a bit like time traveling. Each day, I work on creating a story for the people of the future, not knowing if those words will ever actually reach their destination or if my future, hypothetical readers will even exist. So when a story is finally published, it’s a bit surreal. Everyone in the present gets a glimpse of my past: the words I was fretting over, the twists I was plotting (and re-plotting), and all those pieces that happened in the background of my day-to-day life. There are very few people who get to “time travel” with me, and for them, I’m incredibly grateful for the companionship and support.

For my family: my husband and kiddos, parents and siblings, church family, and friends-who-are-pretty-much-family. To Anne Leonard and S. L. Saboviec, my beta-readers for this story, and for the MTSL ladies and Codexians who have helped me along the way through this publishing journey. For Rhonda Parrish and Sarena Ulibarri at World Weaver Press, who gave these stories a home, made them shine, and got them out into the world. Thank you all for the parts you have played in helping this story find its way into the present timeline.

And to you—my future, hypothetical readers—thank you for existing.

  THE CONTINUUM

A Place in Time, Book 1

  Wendy Nikel

Elise Morley is an expert on the past who’s about to get a crash course in the future.

For years, Elise has been donning corsets, sneaking into castles, and lying through her teeth to enforce the Place in Time Travel Agency’s ten essential rules of time travel. Someone has to ensure that travel to the past isn’t abused, and most days she welcomes the challenge of tracking down and retrieving clients who have run into trouble on their historical vacations.

But when a dangerous secret organization kidnaps her and coerces her into jumping to the future on a high-stakes assignment, she’s got more to worry about than just the time-space continuum. For the first time ever, she’s the one out-of-date, out of place, and quickly running out of time.

  THE GRANDMOTHER PARADOX

A Place in Time, Book 2

  Wendy Nikel

When Dr. Wells, the head of the Place in Time Travel Agency, learns that someone’s trying to track down the ancestors of his star employee, there are few people he can turn to without revealing her secrets. But who better to jump down the timeline and rescue Elise from being snuffed out of existence generations before she’s born than the very person whose life she saved a hundred years in the future?

But Juliette Argent isn’t an easy woman to protect. The assistant to a traveling magician, she’s bold, fearless, and has a fascination with time travel, of all things. Can the former secret agent Chandler, with his knowledge of what’s to come, keep her safe from harm and keep his purpose there a secret? Or will his presence there only entangle the timeline more?

“This is a fun, fast read that brought to mind old favorite shows like Quantum Leap and Sliders…Nikel has created something delightful and fun in this series.”

  GLASS AND GARDENS: SOLARPUNK SUMMERS

  Anthology edited by Sarena Ulibarri

Solarpunk is a type of optimistic science fiction that imagines a future founded on renewable energies. The seventeen stories in this volume are not dull utopias—they grapple with real issues such as the future and ethics of our food sources, the connection between technology and nature, and the interpersonal conflicts that arise no matter how peaceful the world is. In these pages you’ll find a guerilla art installation in Milan, a murder mystery set in a weather manipulation facility, and a world where you are judged by the glow of your solar nanite implants. From an opal mine in Australia to the seed vault at Svalbard, from a wheat farm in Kansas to a crocodile ranch in Malaysia, these are stories of adaptation, ingenuity, and optimism for the future of our world and others. For readers who are tired of dystopias and apocalypses, these visions of a brighter future will be a breath of fresh air.

Stories by Wendy Nikel, Jaymee Goh, Holly Schofield, Julia K. Patt, Stefani Cox, and more.

GRIMM, GRIT, AND GASOLINE: An Anthology of Dieselpunk and Decopunk Fairy Tales

  Anthology edited by Rhonda Parrish

Dieselpunk and decopunk are alternative history re-imaginings of (roughly) the WWI and WWII eras. These are tales with the grit of roaring bombers, rumbling tanks, of ‘We Can Do It’, the Great Depression and old time gangsters, or with the glamour of flappers, Hollywood starlets, smoky jazz, elegant cars and Radio City Music Hall. Plus fairy tales.

Two young women defy the devil with the power of friendship. The pilot of a talking plane discovers a woman who transforms into a swan every night and is pulled into a much more personal conflict than the war he’s already fighting. A pair of twins with special powers find themselves in Eva Braun’s custody and wrapped up in a nefarious plan. A team of female special agents must destroy a secret weapon—the spindle—before it can be deployed. Retellings of The Little Mermaid, Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel, Cinderella, The Monkey King, Swan Lake, Pinocchio and more are all showcased alongside some original fairy tale-like stories. Featuring stories by Alicia Anderson, Jack Bates, Patrick Bollivar, Sara Cleto, Amanda C. Davis, Jennifer Donohue, Juliet Harper, Blake Jessop, A.A. Medina, Elizabeth, Nellie Neves, Wendy Nikel, Brian Trent, Alena VanArendonk, Laura VanArendonk Baugh, Sarah Van Goethem, Robert E. Vardeman and Alejandra Zannier.
