Forging a Desire Line

Page 30

by Mary P. Burns

She had taken the note to heart and quit her job to write full time. Emily was beyond sorry to lose her, but the friendship had deepened as she and Joanna went out with Emily and Terry more frequently now. With Neely’s unerring eye, she’d finished the novel, secured an agent, and he was in the middle of negotiating both a book and a movie deal, much to her astonishment.

Working from home, she discovered, gave her more time with her mother, something she couldn’t appreciate when she was a harried assistant. She’d come to love her mother’s one-item shopping lists; they were excuses to visit almost every day which, considering what her relationship had long been with her mother, dumbfounded her brothers. The visits brought her closer to Robert, too, who was also at her mother’s apartment almost every day. In those last months, Tricia had taught her by default how valuable these hours and such relationships could be.

As she looked up at the clear, cold winter sky, she gave silent thanks for a life so full of friends, unexpected joy, and now love.

Joanna flagged a cab, opened the door, and Charley slid in. The driver flipped on his meter and she saw the Neapolitan angel hanging from his rearview mirror. It looked just like Tricia’s and her breath stopped as Joanna gave the driver her address.

“Is that angel from the Met?” she asked him when she recovered.

“Says so on the bottom, yeah. Got it last year from a woman goin’ to Lincoln Center the night after Christmas. Nice lady. Said I should have an angel on my shoulder.”

Charley smiled and slipped her hand into Joanna’s.

  About the Author

Mary Burns is a long-time resident of New York City. She received a master of fine arts in playwriting from Columbia University in 1991, after which the muses departed for points unknown, leaving no forwarding address. So she carved out a career as an executive assistant for the next twenty years until happenstance left her with the opportunity for some major time off, and, with the blessing of her partner of nineteen years, she sharpened her pencils and sat down to write. The muses knocked on her door a short time later, she hasn’t stopped writing since, and was lucky enough to have this first novel accepted by Bold Strokes Books.

She also recently had a short story published in Sinclair Sexsmith’s Best Lesbian Erotica vol. 4 (Dec. 2019), with another one coming out in Sinclair’s vol. 5 in Dec. 2020. And she is working on her next novel for Bold Strokes.

When not writing (which is rare, now), she and her partner enjoy bingeing Netflix, she sees her therapist once a week, and emails friends and family. You can reach her at maryburns11C@gmail.com.
