“Yeah, thanks. Are you the same guy from before?” she asked.

He nodded as he opened the back door for her. “Indeed. Many can’t tell us apart. Well spotted.”

“You have a look about you,” she joked, slid in, and leaned back as he closed the door. She gazed out at the horizon where dawn had barely begun to break.

The operative opened the door on the driver’s side and got in, closed the door, and slid a hand inside his coat. “Your dealer received his cut upon completion of the mission. He mentioned to me that you prefer cash to deposit.” He withdrew a large white envelope and passed it to her. “Feel free to count it if you wish. Now, where would you like me to drop you off?”

Rika opened the envelope and smiled at the abundant contents. “At my apartment. I assume you already know where that is?”

“You assume correctly, Ms. Albright.” He set the car in motion, circled the lot and away from the building, and set a course back to the city. Rika let her head rest on the back of her seat. The warlock’s words slid into her head once again. She could not sleep yet, unfortunately. There was something else she had to do once she arrived.

Rika opened the door to her abode slowly and tossed her jacket and shoes to the side. Paws pattered on the floor as two cats ran to greet her. She knelt with a smile as she petted them—one orange and the other black with white spots, the latter of which sniffed her palms and moved away. “I guess I probably reek, huh?” She stood, retrieved a small jar from above the fireplace, and opened it to drop treats on the floor. They meowed in response and she grinned as she closed it, replaced it, and took a crystal from the same ledge.

She walked into her living room and closed all the blinds as the early morning sun peeked in. Once seated in a large chair, she studied the blue crystal. She could simply call, but she hadn’t spoken to her sister in quite some time and by using this, she would at least know it was serious. A little uncertain, she thought it over. Would she be bothering her younger sister for no reason? Merely on—no, she didn’t want to take the chance. Victoria had said she believed her back then. She had been there for her at a low point, but she always let that humiliation push her away. Even if it was being paranoid, she should at least use this as an excuse to talk.

Her mind made up, she held the crystal and let magic seep in. It lit up and floated above her palm. She smiled as she looked into her reflection on the surface.

“Hey, Vivi, it’s me. I gotta say, I had a wild night. I’ll fill you in on the details later, but I think there is something you should know. Something that could be coming for Kharaz.
