by Lynne, Karen

  Authors Notes

Our hero Sir Andrew is based on Sir William Pulteney, 5th Baronet. William Johnstone until 1767, was a Scottish advocate, landowner and politician who sat in the House of Commons. He was reputedly the wealthiest man in Great Britain by his marriage to heiress Frances Pulteney on 10 November 1760. He invested in lands in North America, and in developments in Great Britain, including the Pulteney Bridge.

The English Poor laws required workhouses to be built in each parish and the administration of the poor and indigent was handled by poor law unions. The poor laws of England are very extensive, and a thorough study can be found at workhouses.org.uk
