“Tell me, girl, or so help me, I’ll keep you hanging, and if I have to go to work with a hard-on to rival King Kong’s, you will be sorry.”

A strangled laugh escaped his girl, and on a sob, she finally answered him.

  “Yes, yes, I do.”

Gentling his hold on her hair, Logan turned her head to enable him to see her expression.

“Good girl. That wasn’t so hard now, was it?”

“No, Sir, but I feel terrible. She was your wife and I have no right to—umph.”

Logan shut her up by the expedient method of kissing her, and when they finally came up for air they were both gasping for breath. Logan pushed her back down on the table and, taking the collar of his shirt in his hands, ripped the thing clean off of her. Buttons popped in all directions, and Lindsey gasped.

  “Sir?”

“Hush now, and give me your wrists.”

When she did so, he twisted the remains of his shirt around her delicate wrists and forearms. Once she was suitably restrained, he picked up his fork, licked it clean, and, starting at her nape, proceeded to run the tines along her skin in slow circles. Lindsey’s breathing sped up even more, and he pressed harder until he left some very satisfactory red lines behind.

“For the record, girl, you have every right to ask me to do that. You’re going to be my wife and this is your home now. One I never shared with Elena.”

A whimper escaped her when he bumped the tines along her vertebrae until he reached the tiny indents on the base of her spine. He traced them with the fork, stopping when he reached his scribe. Abandoning the fork, he bent to lick across each letter, and Lindsey went limp again.

“This says it all, little bird. You’re mine, and I will not allow the ghost of Elena to come between us in any way. I loved my wife and I grieved her long and hard. She will always possess a large piece of my heart. I’m not going to deny that, but I don’t need her picture to remind me of what we had, not when it causes you distress. Are we clear on that?”

He bit down lightly right in the middle of the worst of Lindsey’s bruises, and his girl cried out.

  “Yes, Sir.”

Smiling, he licked along the slight mark he just left, and continued south until he found her pussy.

“Will you look at that, dripping for me.”

The sweet, slightly salty essence that was his girl exploded on his tongue when he lapped at her cunt, murmuring his appreciation of the sensitive flesh he feasted on. He pinched her clit again while he growled his instructions into her puffy folds.

“Come for me now, girl. I want you to come all over my face, do you hear me?”

Lindsey did not disappoint. Her whole body went rigid, and her pussy convulsed under his lips and tongue as she came with a gush. Logan kept up his suckling of her nectar until the last of her aftershocks abated.

Only then did he come up for air, yank his joggers down, and, grasping the root of his dick, push into her hole.

Lindsey’s moan joined his grunt of appreciation, as the walls of her cunt convulsed around his dick.

“Fuck, yes, this sweet, tight pussy is all mine.”

Logan set up a fast push-and-retreat as his orgasm build in ever-tighter circles of need. There was no finesse to this coupling, but the renewed ripples around his dick and the little sighs and moans that came from his girl told him how very much on board she was with him right now. Careful not to grasp her bruises, he dug his fingers into her hips instead, and bending his knees for extra leverage, he made sure her clit bumped back into that table edge on every one of his thrusts.

Lindsey shook and screamed, clearly appreciating that extra stimulation, and Logan clenched his jaw, determined to stave off the orgasm threatening to pull him under, until she’d come again.

“Fuck, I’m close, tell me you’re there, tell me, yes…argh.”

Her cunt contracting around him as Lindsey came for a second time pushed him, too, over the edge, and Logan thrust in deep one last time as his cum pulsed along his dick. Pulling out on the last few jets, he proceeded to spray her sore ass in his jizz until she was covered in it. One hand braced on the table, he struggled for breath.

  “Mine.”

  * * * *

Unable to move, Lindsey lay prone across the kitchen table, gasping for breath, while her body still trembled in little aftershocks. Having her Sir claim her like this, the raw passion behind his action left her smiling. She would ache all over later, but right now she didn’t care one bit.

The table creaked as Logan leaned in on it, and then he stepped away, leaving her feel curiously bereft. He appeared in her vision, yanking his joggers back up as he disappeared into the attached utility room. A door opened and shut, and then he reappeared with a clean washcloth in his hand and small towel flung over his shoulder. He wet the washcloth under the kitchen tap, smiled at her when he caught her watching, and in the next instant, he was back.

Lindsey hissed as the coolness of the cloth placed over her still-smarting ass cheeks, but she couldn’t deny that the cold felt good.

“Let’s get this shirt off you, little bird.” With deft fingers, he untied her, massaged her arms, and, after he’d gently wiped her clean with the cloth, helped her to stand up. She smiled as he folded the towel into a thick wad, placed it on top of the table, and then sat her on top it.

“There, that should make it easier on your butt. Comfy there?”

He winked at her, but the concern in his blue eyes made the snarky comeback bubbling on her tongue die an instant death.

  “Yes, Sir, thank you.”

He glanced at the wall behind her, and Lindsey held her breath when he stepped round the table, and unhooked the picture of his late wife. She couldn’t decipher the expression on his face, but a sharp stab of jealousy assaulted her insides when he traced the laughing contours of Elena’s mouth and then placed the picture on the floor, face leaning against the kitchen wall.

“You really don’t have to do that, Sir.”

Logan looked up, ran a hand through his hair, and sighed.

“Yes, yes I do. For myself as much as for you, I think. She told me to be happy, you know. Those were the last words she said to me, before she…fuck.”

Fists clenched, Logan shut his eyes briefly, and when he opened them again, the moisture lurking in them made her heart break in two. Wordlessly she held out her arms, and Logan stepped into her embrace without hesitation. There was a desperate sadness in the way he clung to her, and Lindsey simply held the man she loved, until he pulled away, seemingly back in control of his emotion.

“Forgive me. This is not the way I envisage our day starting.”

Lindsey reached out to smooth away the worry lines on his forehead, and he relaxed a little more when she smiled up at him.

  “It’s okay, Sir. I understand.”

Logan cocked his head to one side and studied her with a quiet intensity that held her spellbound.

“Yes, I do believe you do, don’t you? I’ll be honest. I was worried about our age gap, but the more time I spend with you, the less that seems to matter.”

Lindsey couldn’t help it. She rolled her eyes, causing that eyebrow of his to arch up, and she refrained from following through on her impulse to hit the infuriating man upside the head to make him see sense.

“Of course it doesn’t matter. Age is just a number, and I…I love you, Sir.”

A muscle ticked in his jaw at her words, but he didn’t run away. Instead, he stepped closer until their foreheads touched and sighed.

“I wish you wouldn’t say that,” he said, and Lindsey closed her eyes against the searing pain that tore across her heart.

“You said you wanted me to be honest, Sir.”

Logan grasped her neck and, pulling away, dropped a kiss on her forehead.

  “Yes, yes, I did, it’s just…”

Lindsey smiled up at him, and his worried expression relaxed somewhat.

“It’s okay, Sir. I don’t expect you to say i
t back. I’m content with what we have. I never allowed myself to believe that you would even notice me, let alone…” She blushed and dropped her gaze. Logan nudged her chin up, and Lindsey breathed a sigh of relief to see he’d recovered his sense of humor.

“You’re a fascinating study of different shades, little bird,” he said, amusement dancing in his blue eyes now.

“Is that a good thing, Sir?”

“It’s a very good thing. I don’t know many women who would still blush so delightfully, especially after everything we’ve experienced together so far.” He paused, and Lindsey fought and lost another blush. “I find it very refreshing, sweetheart.”

  “Thank you, Sir, I think.”

Logan threw his head back and laughed, and Lindsey grinned back at him.

“I want to stay, but I really need to get a move on. My partner is enthusiastic, but very green, and I need to make sure he’s not overwhelmed, but there is something I should have asked you, and I really can’t put it off anymore.”

Lindsey’s stomach tightened, and she shoved her hands under her thighs to stop them trembling.

“Don’t look so worried, baby. It’s just…I should have asked you this before…” He ran a hand through his hair and threw her a lopsided grin. “Damn it, I’m cocking this up, but I haven’t used a condom either time, and…” He stopped talking when Lindsey’s relieved bubble of laughter burst from her.

“I know you didn’t, Sir. It’s okay. I would have made you use one, had it been an issue.”

Logan’s shoulders slumped and he nodded again.

“Right, right, that’s good. I do have some that I use on my toys, but they’re probably out of date anyway, and—” Leaning across, Lindsey interrupted him by kissing him. After a moment’s hesitation, he kissed her back, taking charge of the kiss, like only he could. When he eventually pulled away with a nip to her bottom lip, Lindsey had a hard time even remembering what they’d been talking about.

“I just hate the damn things, you know.”

If she’d blinked, she’d have missed it, but there was a slight ruddiness to his cheekbones, as though he was embarrassed at that admission, and Lindsey giggled.

“Are you making fun of your Dom?” he asked, but the twinkle in his eyes told her he wasn’t annoyed.

“I wouldn’t dream of it, Sir. I have an implant, so we’re all good.”

  Logan sobered and nodded.

“Mind telling me why? You weren’t sexually active, after all.”

“No, I wasn’t, but Mama put me on the pill when I was teenager to regulate my cycle. After the accident, I kept forgetting to take the damn things, so my doctor suggested the implant. It’s due to be replaced soon, actually.”

“I see.” Logan looked as though he was going to say something else, glanced toward the crayon marks on the wall, and the penny dropped with a resounding clang in Lindsey’s mind.

“Can I ask you something, Sir?”

Logan turned his attention back to her, and nodded.

  “Of course, little bird.”

“If I decided not to have a new implant fitted, would that be a problem?” His eyes widened in surprise and a muscle ticked in his clenched jaw, but he showed no other reaction to her question, so she rushed on. “I mean, with you not liking condoms and all that, and…” She ran out of steam and dropped her gaze, no longer able to stand his intense, silent scrutiny.

“Actions such as that would usually result in babies, little bird.” There was a hopeful catch to his voice, which made her heart beat faster, and when she eventually found the courage to look at him, he was smiling.

“Yes, they would, Sir, though the doctor warned me that with my irregular periods, my likelihood of having children is greatly reduced. I take after Mama in that regard.” Her voice broke as she recalled the horrifying instant when she was told that her mother had lost her much-longed-for baby brother.

Logan framed her face in his hands, and as though he knew which dark direction her thoughts were meandering down, he ran his thumb over her scar.

“It wasn’t your fault, little bird. From what I understand, she would have lost him anyway. That boy was never meant to live.”

“Guido,” she said and he pulled back a fraction.

  “What?”

  “Mama called him Guido.”

“I see.” Logan didn’t say anything else, just watched her, and Lindsey sighed.

“And yes, the rational side of me knows that it wasn’t my fault, but every once in a while that guilt comes out of nowhere, you know.”

“I know that only too well, little bird, and I want you to promise me something.” He waited until she nodded before he continued. “When it does, I want you tell me, and I’ll do my best to take you out of your head and to chase those thoughts away.”

Tears welled up in Lindsey’s eyes, and she hastily blinked them away.

  “I promise, Sir.”

“Good girl.” He stepped away, looked up at the clock, and swore softly under his breath.

“Dammit, I’m late. I wanted to put some more cream on your bruises, but there’s no time for that. Promise me you’ll have a good, long soak in the bath, and then apply it yourself?”

  “I will, Sir, I promise.”

“Good girl. I have to grab a quick shower, and then I’m off.” He turned mid walking away, and gestured around the kitchen. “Feel free to rearrange anything in the house you don’t like. I want you to feel at home here. I haven’t really done anything with the place since I moved in so…have at it.” He paused, glanced at the crayon marks, and turned back round again.

“Let’s have that discussion about children again when it’s time to remove your contraception, shall we?”

Lindsey nodded, and with one long last searching look at her, he left her on her own. She gingerly hopped off the table and traced the crayon marks which had sparked this whole train of thought.

While he hadn’t outright said that he wanted children, he hadn’t dismissed the idea out of hand either, and happiness bloomed inside her at the thought of giving him a child. She glanced toward the back of the picture leaning against the wall and gave a mental fist-pump. That was something he’d never had with Elena, and she would try her hardest to be able to do that for him.

  Chapter Seventeen

His little bird was never far from Logan’s mind for the rest of the day, and he lost count how many times he had his phone in his hands, ready to ring her, before he decided against it. It wouldn’t do to crowd her, and her mother’s words that morning rang in his head.

  They do that, after all.

Alone in his office after a busy day, dealing with all the small domestic animals and their respective owners you could shake a stick at, he picked up Elena’s and his wedding picture, and frowned.

Had he run her life for her, in such a way that he’d come across as an overbearing asshole to her friend? Elena’s happy smile gave him no answers at all whatsoever. It also didn’t give him that deep-seated ache in his gut, the desperation that gnawed at his soul at all he’d lost, either. His brave little bird seemed to have filled all the cracks left behind by Elena’s loss. Only last week, he wouldn’t have thought that to be possible, but like it or not, Lindsey had given him a new reason for living. She needed him, not in the way that Elena, had, but that was probably a good thing.

“We were happy, weren’t we, kitten?”

He received no answer from the picture, of course, and the discreet knock on his door made him put the frame down on his desk.

  “Come in.”

Rissa stuck her head round the corner and Logan smiled at his favorite vet nurse.

“You got a minute, boss?” she asked, and stepped in the room when she nodded.

“What can I do for you, Rissa?” he asked.

“Well, I was wondering…the surgery is expanding rapidly, especially with the new vet you’ve taken on, and—”

“What do you think of Mason?” Logan interrupted her. “I
haven’t been around enough to observe him, and besides, you nurses know everything, so…spill.”

Rissa smiled and screwed her nose up in that rather cute way she had when she was thinking about something. Logan knew it drove Jonas crazy, and he smirked at his thought processes.

“He’s got a lot to learn still, and he’s green, but very enthusiastic and skilled. In time, he will make an excellent vet. His rapport with the clients, especially the children, is amazing, and he’s not afraid to take on suggestions from the nurses, which is always good.” She colored slightly while she said that, and Logan laughed.

“I know some of us can be a tad overbearing.”

Rissa giggled and shrugged her shoulders.

“True, but Mason isn’t like that. Like I said, he’s a real asset to the surgery.”

Logan ran a hand over his face, satisfied with what he was hearing.

“Good, because I’ll be spending less time here in future, and I’m thinking of using one of the on-call services for the weekend call-outs. Most veterinary surgeries are going down that route now, and it would make the work load easier on us all.”

“It would, but I kind of like that we do it ourselves. It makes Fester’s different, more personal, you know. If you employed a couple more vet nurses and perhaps a weekend receptionist to take the load of Bridget, it would work.”

  “How so?” he asked.

Rissa’s eyes shone with excitement as she laid out her plan, and crossing his arms over his chest, Logan listened. It had definitively been one of his better moves to employ Rissa, and she seemed to be onto something there. He had to grin when she finished with her ace up her sleeve.

“I’ll do all the work. I’ve even drafted the recruitment ad, see.”

She pulled a folded paper out of her scrubs and handed it to him.

Logan scanned it over and whistled through his teeth.

“You really have thought of everything, haven’t you?”

Rissa bounced on the soles of her feet and nodded.
