  Skye

"You're joking, right?" I asked as I stared at my dad, my brother, and my uncle.

"Please, tell me you're joking." When no one answered, I shook my head. "If this is a prank, it's not funny. If you fess up now, I'll forgive you much faster than normal." Finally, after several minutes, Uncle Joe shook his head. He was a crooked cop, who often took bribes from people that had committed white collar crimes,

"I'm sorry, Skye," he began, and my heart stopped dead in my chest. "We're not joking."

Betrayal and anger burned inside me as I looked at each of the men before me. "Let me get this straight," I said as I pinched the bridge of my nose, hoping to understand my situation fully. "You took a loan from a loan shark, because the bakery was going under, and—when the loan shark demanded the loan in full—a friend of Uncle Joe's offered to pay it under the condition that I come live with him?"

I opened my eyes and looked at each of them. "Please tell me I'm misunderstanding you, and you're actually asking me for help paying the loan."

Brad, my brother, shook his head. "The amount he was asking for was too high," he argued, his brown eyes looking like those of a calf instead of his own. "There was no way all four of us could have afforded it, even if we’d asked for your help."

I crossed my arms and tilted my head at him. "How much was the guy asking for?" I asked, and they all stared at the floor, completely embarrassed. "Come on, you can tell me. How much was he saying you owed?"

Finally, Dad looked at me. "He wanted three hundred eighty-six thousand dollars," he admitted.

I rolled my eyes and shook my head. "This is why I warned you against refinancing the bakery with a loan shark," I said as I stared them down. "You do know the bank is always the safest route, right?"

Brad shook his head. "The bank wouldn't approve us for anything!" he exclaimed as he stared at me. "They said that we needed our scores to average seven hundred fifty, and Dad's score tanked us to six hundred thirty."

I raised my arms and shrugged.

"Hello!" I shouted. "I didn't become a real estate agent for nothing! Not only could I have helped you sell the old dump, so you could move to a much nicer location, where you would have a shit ton more business, but I could also have put you in contact with a friend of mine who works at the bank. She knows how to get people approved when the seller's amount doesn't cut it!"

I dropped my arms to my hips and shook my head. "What's even more annoying is the fact that you know I have accounts at a minimum of three different banks because I don't trust their two hundred fifty thousand insurance policy. You could have come to me, and I could have given you the money!"

Uncle Joe frowned in confusion. "What about that house you were buying?" he asked. "That had to have drained you." I rolled my head to the side and stared at him.

"I bought that outright with cash for one hundred seventy-nine thousand at a foreclosure auction," I informed him. "Besides, you all know that I don't do much with the money I make. I just do this because it's fun! If I wanted to, I could retire and move to Hawaii!"

All three looked stunned as they exchanged looks. When no one responded, I shook my head. "This is why I told you to come to me after you heard back from the bank. I would have just given you the money if you really needed me to."

Uncle Joe shot an accusing look at Dad. "I told you she'd never agree," he told him. "Now what are we going to do about Derek?"

I sighed and shook my head.

"You aren't going to do anything," I said as I looked at them. "You aren't allowed out of this house until I get to the bottom of this."

Brad frowned as I left the room to retrieve my purse and car keys. "What are you going to do?" he asked.

I stopped and stared down my wide eyed, gaping-mouthed family. "I'm going to pay Mr. Derek a visit and see if I can pay him back what he gave you," I told them as I pointed at Uncle Joe. "If you would give me his address, that would be most appreciated."

As if in a trance, Uncle Joe took out a pen and scribbled the address down on a sheet of unused legal pad paper. When he was done, he tore the sheet free and handed it to me.

I snatched it from his hands and waved at my family. "If you don't hear from me in an hour, call the police."

Dad frowned in confusion as he tilted his head at me. "But Joe is the police," he said, and I rolled my eyes.

"I mean someone who isn't always accepting bribes from snooty rich assholes," I snapped as I turned and marched towards the door. "I'll call you and tell you what he says."

With that, I hurried out the door and out to my car.

As much as I loved my family, there were plenty of days where I could just kill them all. I knew Dad was looking to refinance after the fire charcoaled the whole kitchen six months ago, and I knew I should have ignored his pleas and just paid everything for him. To me, money was no object, and I wanted what was best for them. It drove me crazy when they made any decisions like this on their own. Once more, it was up to me to clean up their mess.

  CHAPTER TWO

  Derek

"Hello?" I answered, pressing the button on my desk phone. The screen lit up immediately, showing surveillance footage of a woman driving a sleek, black Honda.

"Hello," she said as she leaned out of the driver side window, making it easier to see her face. "My name is Skylar Benedict. I'm here on behalf of my family, Gregory, Bradley, and Joseph Benedict."

I raised an eyebrow at the panel on my phone and nodded.

"Right, you're early," I pointed out as I pressed the button. "Come on in. I'll greet you at the door."

She nodded and waved a hand in acknowledgement as she disappeared into her sleek vehicle.

She was unexpectedly early, but I wasn't one to complain. I had asked that they send her by the end of the weekend, and it was only Wednesday. They made good on their promise, which made me happy. As I rose from my chair, I straightened my suit and started towards the front door. With my hand on the doorknob, I took a deep breath, mentally preparing for my guest.

"Hello," said the woman on the other side of the door when I finally opened it.

"Are you Derek Lanberger?" she asked.

I nodded. "Yes, ma'am," I said as I looked her up and down. "And you must be Skylar Benedict."

She nodded as I motioned for her to enter the room. Her long, blonde hair was pulled back into a sleek ponytail, and it contrasted with her dark-blue business suit. Her green eyes sparkled like emeralds, but her expression was cold and set. That made it a little easier to take her seriously despite the fact that she was much shorter than I was. She looked as if she was here on business, and I had already assumed that she might see it this way. It was just a matter of changing that.

"Please, call me Skye," she said as she offered her hand along with a calm, confident smile.

"It's a pleasure to meet you." I smiled down at her as I took her hand in mine. It was soft and tiny, yet she gripped my hand firmly as she a
ttempted to shake my hand.

"The pleasure is all mine," I said as I smiled at her.

I leaned forward and kissed the back of her delicate hand. "If you will, please follow me." She nodded, and I closed the door and led her into my massive mansion.

"You're home is absolutely amazing," she said as she looked, around while I led her from the front door to the living room and library to the left of the door. Her voice was full of amazement, and the tiny squeak at the beginning of her statement before she had cleared it away was simply adorable.

"Thank you," I told her with a smile as we exited the living room and entered the grand dining room before stopping at the glass sliding door that led to my backyard. "The collection I have in the living room is mostly for show. I have a full library upstairs." I stopped and debated whether to show her yard or save that for last. Deciding to wait, I continued towards the kitchen.

"I'll let you know now that the only other person, who is here on a daily basis besides my clients, is my housekeeper, Rita."

She stopped and stared at the kitchen counters in disbelief, and I stopped as she looked at me.

"There's no way this is granite," she said as she gently knocked a knuckle on the counter. "It's too perfect." I shrugged as I looked at her.

"It's marble, actually," I informed her. Her eyes widened in disbelief.

"Absolutely incredible," she said as she stared at the counter. "I didn't think they used marble to make counter tops." She then turned her head to the cabinet doors. "Are those mahogany?" When I nodded in response, her jaw dropped, and she turned to study the woodwork. "It's absolutely beautiful. I've never seen a more perfect kitchen in all my life."

  I smiled happily at her.

"You're more than welcome to it," I informed her, and she frowned in confusion. Realizing that I was getting ahead of myself, I raised my hands in surrender. "My apologies; I'm getting ahead of myself. Please, let me show you the rest of the house, and we'll talk afterwards."

She nodded in agreement, and the strangely out of place professional smile returned to her perfectly sweet face. "Of course," she said, and I continued to show her my home.

Everything from the structure of the marble pillars leading up the stairs to the luxurious bathrooms amazed her, and I couldn't help but picture the little orphan Annie looking around Daddy Warbuck's mansion, when I saw just how amazed she was. Whatever doubts she seemed to have, when she first arrived, were long gone as I showed her around. In fact, she seemed to grow more and more excited the longer she was here. That was until we reached the nursery.

"Do you have children?" she asked as she looked around at the nursery.

It was set up like an old fashioned, twentieth-century century nursery meant for well-off children, but I had yet to do anything but decorate it. Her perfect face twisted into a look of confusion as she approached the queen-sized bed I had placed for her, not knowing how tall she was or how much room she needed. It was decorated with pink and white sheets, and there were plenty of pink, fluffy pillows. On the bed, nestled between the many pillows I had placed there, was a single teddy bear with a velvet blue bow tie, which, ironically, was the same shade as her suit.

"No, actually, I don't," I told her as she turned back to face me. "This is meant to be your room." Immediately, the look of wonder and amazement disappeared from her face and was replaced by that same no-nonsense look as before.

"About that," she said as she politely clasped her hands in front of her. "I appreciate what you did for my family, but I came to speak to you about the deal you made." I frowned in confusion at her.

"I'm not sure I understand what you mean," I said, and she sighed.

"I understand that they promised I would come and live with you as payment for you repaying their debt," she began, "but I came to renegotiate the deal and offer to repay you the cash that you put forward for them."

  CHAPTER THREE

  Skye

"Do you not like the house?" he asked as he stared at me in confusion. "If there's anything not to your liking, I can always change it. Money is no issue."

Realizing what he meant, I shook my head.

"Oh no, I love your home," I said. "I find it to be perfect in every way. I just came to see if we could repay you in some other way." Seeing his look of confusion deepen, I took a deep breath and shook my head. "You see, we have the money to repay my family's loan. I was on my way to repay it, when my family explained everything to me. Now that I know that it's been paid already, I came to speak with you." I kept a polite smile on my face, but there was something about the room that was unsettling. It was making me feel like a child again, and I didn't like it. "I am willing to repay you the money you paid in order to pay their debt."

He frowned and tapped a finger against his luscious lips as he stared at me.

In all honesty, the idea of living with this hunk of man wasn't in any way revolting. After all, he was over six feet tall and built like The Hulk. Even though his dark, silk suit attempted to give him a more sophisticated look, it still rippled with every move he made, almost as if it was fighting to contain his humongous body within its silky folds. My mind started to wonder if everything about him was as big and tan as he appeared, even beyond the silk suit. I took a deep breath and shook my head, trying to shake the thought from my head.

"So, you don't want to live here, then?" he asked, sounding a little hurt. His gray eyes stared me down, making my natural confidence dissolve, and I started to quake as I stood before him.

"It's not that," I said as I rubbed the back of my neck, attempting to hide the nervous sweat that threatened to stain my suit. "You see, I feel that it would be more convenient for you if I were to pay you back the money you gave us, instead of putting you through all the trouble of accommodating me in your lovely home. After all, I have my job to attend to regularly, my house still has a lot of work I need to do, and I'm sure having me around would be such a bother."

His eyes widened as he finally realized what I meant. “Oh, I see,” he said as he smiled at me, tapping his chin as he spoke. “You have concerns about living with me, and you believe that, if you pay me the money back, things will just continue as normal.”

I smiled as I nodded. "Yes," I said as I reached into my purse for my checkbook. "I want to make this transaction as simple and painless as possible. Now, how much did you end up paying them?"

He shook his head at me, and my heart stopped dead in my chest.

"It's no bother at all," he told me as he approached. "I can assist you with putting your affairs in order and everything." When he saw the frown on my face, he sighed and shook his head. "I see… You are a tough negotiator." He smiled at me. "How about we make a deal?" I raised my eyebrow at him.

"What kind of deal?" I asked, and he chuckled.

"Stay with me for the weekend," he said as he looked at me. "I mean the full holiday weekend, not the regular weekend."

I frowned and shook my head. "I don't know if I can," I protested as I looked at him. "You see, I still have to return to the office and make sure my work is done, and I usually work on the fourth of July to make sure I'm ready when the weekend is over."

He smiled as he started towards me, and my knees threatened to collapse as the rest of my worries melted away with my words.

"You work so hard," he pointed out, and a slight whimper escaped my throat as he stood before me, so close that I swore I could feel his breath on my face as he continued. "You should take a break and enjoy yourself. When was the last time you truly got to spend time on something you wanted to do for fun?" As if under some sort of spell, I thought for a moment.

"Before I entered high school, I guess," I admitted. "I started working for my dad in the family business shortly after my mom died, and my brother quit college to help us." He smiled and nodded understandingly.

"It's just one holiday weekend," he said as he brushed some hair out of my face. "You stay here until the day after the fourth of July and sample the life y
ou could have while living with me, and, if you decide you don't want to stay here, I'll only accept one hundred thousand dollars in order for you to pay me back for everything I gave your family."

I raised an eyebrow at him suspiciously as I looked around the room.

It seemed too good to be true. After all, even though the money wasn't a problem, if I could get him to accept one hundred thousand instead of three hundred eighty thousand, it meant I could give the extra money to my family and make sure this sort of problem never came up again. I could spare a full weekend to spend time with someone Uncle Joe trusted enough to allow Dad and Brad to make this kind of deal with in the first place, so long as he didn't try to force himself on me.

I took a deep breath and nodded.

"I'm willing to accept your deal," I informed him, "but I have a few questions about boundaries and what exactly to expect."

He smiled at me gently and nodded in agreement as he motioned towards the bed.

"Have a seat," he instructed, "and we'll talk this out."

  CHAPTER FOUR

  Derek

I couldn't believe how willing she was to accept the deal, but I was also relieved when she reluctantly agreed and sat down on the bed. It was hard to find people anymore, so, when Joe and Greg agreed to have Skye come live with me in exchange for paying their debt, I was thrilled. Finally, for the first time in years, I would be able to help others out without them feeling as if they owed me something.

"So, what exactly would you expect from me?" she asked, a sweet, gentle smile on her innocent face as she looked at me. I shook my head.

"You wouldn't have to do anything you didn't want to," I informed her as I watched her carefully. "You could do whatever you want in your spare time, from playing outside to reading in the library. Again, the kitchen is open to you as well." She frowned in confusion.
