Something in his tone told me he wasn’t convinced by his own argument.
‘Me neither,’ I said. ‘Time to settle down and enjoy the fruits of our labour.’
‘Still, is kinda quiet though.’
I looked at Anna, bronzed and hair bleached a golden blonde by the sun. Her long legs were tanned and accentuated by what you could see through the slit of the sarong. The T-shirt couldn’t hide her curves either. I’m sure some of the customers only came here to gaze wistfully at her. Still, good for business. She was three months’ pregnant now. Seemed like a long time to go.
My mobile rang. I’d left it behind the bar while we went for our exercise. Anna answered it. Frowned, walked across the sand and handed it to me.
‘It’s Red,’ she said.
I said hello and listened intently while the words tumbled out. He sounded serious, none of the Comanche-warrior stuff intruding into his speech.
‘I’ll get back to you,’ I said.
Anna sat down between me and Bull.
‘What did he want?’ she asked.
‘Something about running into some bad men. I wasn’t really paying attention.’
‘I noticed,’ she said.
‘Talked about needing some help.’
‘And he did come when you called,’ she said.
‘He said Stan had agreed to go – yet to contact Pieter. Maybe the two or three of them can sort it out.’
‘Maybe,’ she said.
‘So what do you think? Should I go?’
She looked at me and gave a big grin.
‘Reckon so,’ she said.
