“As they should,” she said with a smile. “Seeing as we’ll be asking them to do the same not too long from now.”
His heart actually seized when he thought about how lucky he was. He looked down between them to where her belly was barely showing. The baby would come around the same time as their first wedding anniversary. What a way to celebrate.
“I feel . . .”
“What?” she asked softly, her palm touching his cheek. He leaned into it, absorbed her touch.
“I feel like I have the world’s share of happiness. No man deserves so much,” he whispered.
“You do. You deserve everything and more.” Her voice was low and solemn.
She had mostly stopped having nightmares, but every now and then he woke in the night, sometimes from a nightmare of his own, and found her clutching him in the dark. He’d pull her impossibly closer, reassuring her she was safe with him, for good. Forever.

He didn’t know why they had to face the challenges thrown at them. But he couldn’t deny each step they took led to something better. It didn’t erase the heartache of their pasts, but it was soothing to know that, beyond the hurt, it had led them to each other. It had made them stronger, for each other. It had made them who they were today, and Josh wouldn’t trade that for anything.
“That’s what you are, Alessa,” he whispered, kissing her again, putting a protective hand on her stomach. “What we have. It’s everything.”
