How long was I out?
He had no idea. Hours, maybe more.
He tried walking over to the cabin, but his knees were too weak. Kneeling before the wreckage, he watched the flames flicker in chaotic fury. He squinted, looking for other survivors. He couldn't see any; they were still inside the cabin, either dead from the crash or being torched alive. Either way, day was upon them.
He crawled. Beyond the wreckage, he thought he saw movement. An animal? He wasn't sure. In the distance, over the sound of crackling fire, he thought he heard an engine. Then, he heard someone moan. Nearby. On the other side of the cabin, the one sweating black smoke.
Soren scrambled back to his feet. He put one foot in front of the other and found walking extremely difficult. It was like his legs had never learned the concept. His brain and feet weren't on the same page and he stumbled many times. More moans from the other side of the car, and the small groans coming from an injured man motivated Soren to kick-start his motor skills. It took several moments to travel twenty yards, but he arrived and spotted the source of the groaning.
Aldo lay next to a pile wreckage. Half of his face had been exposed to a ray of sunlight and his skin had crisped. Soren grabbed his old friend by his boots and yanked him into the shadows the battered cabin provided. Soren dropped to his knees and tapped Aldo's face, hoping to keep him conscious.
Over his shoulder, he saw a Jeep speeding in his direction. Voices. Shouting. Shadows were closing in.
“Aldo,” Soren said, slapping him harder. “Aldo, can you hear me?”
“Blood,” Aldo whispered. His eyes were closed, but his mouth hung open.
“I need you to tell me the name of the person in Chicago.” He grabbed his old friend by the throat and shook him furiously. “The woman. I need her name. Do you understand?”
“Blood... Her... Blood.”
“Whose blood, Aldo? Whose blood?”
“Sha.. Blood.”
“Aldo. I need a name.”
Aldo coughed. Blood spurted from his mouth, dripping down his chin. “Blood... Shay.”
“Shay? Are you saying shade, or Shay?”
“Blood... Her... Blood.”
Soren waited for more, but those were the last words Aldo Hood spoke. His eyes glazed over and when Soren checked for a pulse, he found nothing.
Behind him, shadows emerged. Men in full black. Covered from head to toe. They had weapons. Guns. Heavy artillery. They told Soren to stand, put his hands behind his head and make no sudden movements.
With no other options, he complied.
