  “Let’s aim for the former.”

Reaper turned to the berserkers and waved his hand across the field. Flames shot up from the ground and devoured the first wave of berserkers. Nightmare drew his scythe, Rage, and the two of them charged Fallout’s berserker army.

  CHAPTER 71

Shade watched helplessly as Muan, in cheetah form, ran directly at Nissa, tackled her, and pinned her to the ground. He acted instinctively and teleported, hoping he would make it in time. Muan attempted to bit Nissa’s neck, be he bit down on one of Damnation’s blades instead. Shade kicked the cheetah hard in the ribs and it went flying off Nissa. Shade helped Nissa to her feet. Tears were running down her cheeks.

“I don’t think I can kill him, Shade. He’s too powerful.”

  Shade’s eyes started glowing white.

“I won’t let him touch you again. Say the word and I will kill him.”

“Do it. Do it for my father.”

Muan turned into a rhino and started charging at Shade. Shade side-stepped the charge and hit the rhino directly in one of its legs with Damnation. The rhino turned back into Muan and screamed out in pain.

“You cut halfway into my hand, you fucking bastard!”

Muan realized that Shade’s eyes were glowing white.

“Shit. I’ve seen Shadow like that. I need to get out of here.”

Muan turned into a crow and started to fly away. Shade turned to Nissa.

“Throw your knives. Bring him down and I’ll finish this.”

Nissa reached into her inner pockets and pulled knife after knife, throwing each one with power and accuracy. The crow dodged the first two, but the third struck him in the wing. The crow struggled to stay flying, but kept falling to lower and lower altitudes. Ultimately, Muan knew he needed to turn and attack or he wouldn’t escape alive. He turned to face the nephilim and turned into a dragon. Shade charged.

Muan inhaled deeply and then started breathing fire. Shade summoned a direct line of ice and ran directly into the flames behind it. When he reached Muan, he ran inside the dragon’s jaws.

  “Shade!”

Nissa thought for a moment that she had lost him, but then the dragon fell over. Nissa approached cautiously. A tear appeared near the dragon’s heart and Shade stepped out, covered in blood and guts. His eyes were no longer glowing.

“I decided to get to the heart of the problem.”

  Nissa looked confused.

“I ran down his throat and cut his heart in half.”

Nissa punched Shade playfully in the arm.

“You really think now is the right time for puns?”

  “Why not?”

Nissa grabbed Shade by the jaw and turned his head to face her.

  “Thank you.”

She kissed him and then put her arms around him.

  AFTERWORD

Shade, Nissa, and Backlash all made it back to Necropolis safely. Steam cast a light healing spell on Lucia’s head and told her to rest. When he left the room and came back shortly afterwards, Lucia was gone.

Shade, Nissa, and Backlash delivered Muan’s scythe to Leech and the nephilim council. Steam and Selene beamed proudly at Backlash. Lilith started to cry. The nephilim council, now including Bumalin, unanimously voted Shade, Nissa, and Backlash in as middle nephilim.

Ariel was hesitant about approaching Bumalin, but eventually told him she was pregnant. She didn’t mention that she wasn’t on birth control or that she had tricked him. Bumalin read her mind and found out, but ultimately was so happy when the baby boy was born that he didn’t care. Ariel left the whore house and moved in with Bumalin.

Steam and Selene strengthened the walls of Necropolis and the nephilim city were hopeful that Shadow would return one day and even dared to hope that they could survive the onslaught that would inevitably come from the angels and demons as retaliation for the deaths of Raphael, Raven, and Muan.
