“That’s it?” I asked, when he stopped. I stood up and rubbed my blazing behind, and at the first touch, wondered if the heat and humidity had affected my brain. Nobody in her right mind would ask for more of what I’d just had, or of what Jeb can do when he really gets warmed up.

“Not enough?” he asked mildly. “If you’re still feeling guilty, I can always start again, but after the day you’ve had, you’re probably as bushed as I am. Let’s just call it a day.”

  “Thank you,” I said softly.

“Don’t thank me yet,” he said, putting his belt back on. “Tomorrow’s another day, and tomorrow is the day I talk to everyone’s insurance reps. That bike you squashed was a vintage Harley, and I’m pretty sure parking meters and fire hydrants don’t come cheap. Destruction of a mailbox may be a federal offense, by the way. And that’s before you even got to the pier. You might want to go home and hide your hairbrush and all the rulers and wooden spoons you can find. The fifth of July could end up being even hotter than the Fourth has been.”

I just love a man with a sense of humor, don’t you?

  THE END

  Epilogue:

I was wrong about a couple of things. A lot of people were carrying video cameras that day. So far, I’ve seen every hideous moment of what happened at least fifty times, and from fifty different angles. Nobody won a spot on TV with his or her footage, though. The producers told the one guy who tried that the whole thing looked staged. No one person could be that dumb. The second thing I was wrong about was acoustics. Apparently, sounds from under the boardwalk are carried along quite nicely on the ocean breeze—at least far enough up the beach to have been overheard in bits and pieces by Mayor Ed Perkins and his wife Edna, who were lounging on a blanket, watching the dazzling display in the sky. I ran into him three days afterward, at the Food King.

“I understand the chief investigated and got to the bottom of things real fast the other night,” the mayor observed, with a distinctly evil grin. “It’s good to know we’ve got a man like Jeb on the job, the kinda fella who knows how to take things firmly in hand when it’s called for.”

And then, Mayor Perkins winked, which made me very glad I haven’t voted for the SOB.

“I swear this year was one of the hottest Fourths we’ve ever had,” he babbled on. “And that kind of heat can make a man irritable and short-tempered with the little woman when she ruffles his feathers. I remember tellin’ Edna that some unhappy lady out there was gonna’ get her butt blistered real good before the day was out, if she didn’t watch her step.”

I smiled weakly, picked up my recycled grocery sack, and hurried off to the parking lot, to look around for my brand new car —the 1988 Ford Escort with the dented hood and mismatched fenders. I finally found it, of course, sitting exactly where I’d left it. That’s why Jeb bought it for me. It’s not the sort of vehicle anyone would want to steal.
