“It could happen.” Allie said, stifling secret amusement, although Marla was sharp enough to figure it out.
Marla reached into her bag with a rustle of paper and tissue. “Okay, so I know I gave you a set of crockery as a gift—practical and boring. But this is my real wedding gift to you. And my favorite, of course.”
She pulled out a thick plush album chock full of vibrant pictures of Heartland Cove on the day of their wedding. People smiling and laughing and eating and toasting Allie and Ethan.
Joy burst out of the pictures and Allie laughed, even as tears filled her eyes at the memories and emotion displayed in the photos. “I’m blown away. These are absolutely perfect.”
“Here’s the best photo,” Marla said. “I had it framed in Montreal. The guy at the shop did a gorgeous job.”
Indeed, it was. The beveled matting was a gold color and the frame was gilded in an antique finish.
The photo was an image of Ethan and Allie gazing out at the bridge, hand in hand. Allie’s white wedding dress billowed about her, veil flying in an unseen breeze, while Ethan looked devastatingly gorgeous in a white tux and tails. Winter white against a bright blue sky that defied weather logic on Christmas Eve, despite the fresh snow in drifts about their feet.
Allie remembered how cold she was that day and by the time they returned to the reception she couldn’t feel her toes. Taking pictures was a quick and frantic venture, and most of them had been done indoors, of course, but both of them wanted a photo in their wedding finery at the Heartland Cove County Bridge.
“I love it, Marla,” Allie told her. “Thank you.”
She sighed, glancing up at Ethan who reached down to press his lips to her forehead, eyes glistening. “A dream come true, my girl,” he said softly.
In the picture, she and Ethan’s hands were clasped tightly together, eyes focused on the distant shore. As if their future had suddenly opened up in a vision only the two of them could see. A future bright and clear, and filled with an unexpected love.

Mayor Jefferies made a statement to the press today that he will not be running for reelection next year.
