  “Is that the same for Southern Forest?”

  “All the forests. More are in the north because it covers a wider area.”

  “I went through Southern Forest and reached the end of the island with the black stallion yesterday.”

  Delia smiled. “That’s different. The horses know exactly where those traps are.”

  The implication sank in. The traps were part of their security. If anyone were nimble and foolish enough to climb up the wall of the island, they’d have to face the traps in the forests before they made it to the village. Same with anyone foolish enough to believe they could escape the island. Like me. I might use the horse to get past the traps, but then I’d have to face the damn cliffs.

  Completely demoralized, I spent the rest of the evening in the tower, waiting for Storm to return. I finally accepted the one fact I’d fought since I arrived on the island. I was never going home.

  The sun was setting, giving the island a warm glow, when the horn went off. The door opened, and Delia burst into the room.

  “Storm is home, lass.”
